    Welcome to

New York CityAwaiting your July arrivalis a room in

a boutique 4-star hotel in Manhattan.

Get ready or something dierent: thefnancial district. Generally a destination

or businessmen in ill-ftting suits and

    tourists sporting cameras and anny

packs, the area can eel at frst like anuncultured concrete chaos. But, as I ound

during my temporary stint there, it oers

so much more. On July 23, wave Main

Street good-bye and say hello to Wall

Streets hidden charms. In the ollowing

pages, Ill introduce you to some omy

    avorite spots in Manhattans southern

tip. But frst, let me show you your hotel.

Hello, FiDi.From Swedish caes and Italian espressobars to sweeping views o the Brooklyn

    Bridge and a new starchitect-designed

skyscraper, youll fnd many reasons to

dip your toes in new territory. I suggestspending your Friday soaking up the mad-dash-to-

    the-weekend atmosphere, meandering through the

areas winding streets and looking up every once

in a while to catch high-up architectural detailing.

Linger around ber-cute Stone St., which fllswith picnic tables and happy hour crowds in good

weather. Dont miss Nassau St. or authentic bric-

a-brac claustrophobia as it parades the ugly but

classic combination o Blimpie subs, Dunkin Donuts,

cheap dress shops, and matchbox-sized bodegas

under towering old buildings. I used to walkWilliamand Pearl streets oten when in the mood or a

less grungy but equally busy vibe. At the South

Street Seaport, youll fnd cobblestone streets lined

with ood, drink, and shopping galore, rom your

standard ale houses and breweries to sushi bars

and Italian delicatessens. (Check out the delightul

Barbarini Ristorante on Front St., a deli-restaurant

mashup.) This area has a bit o a Baltimore Inner

Harbor/Richmond eel, and it leads you right tothe waterront. You could do the usual and head to

Pier 17 or an East River lookout, but I recommend

instead strolling straight to the bikeway and

esplanade at Peck Slip, where you can catch the

most stunning views o the Brooklyn Bridge. Lookup rom just about anywhere around the seaport

and youll spot the Beekman, Frank Gehrys nearly

fnished tower o slithering silver metal and glass.

Not ar rom it lies the entrance to the Brooklyn

Bridge, should you eel inspired to cross over to myborough or just take a ew steps. I you do cross,

itll spit you out in Dumbo (short or Down Under

the Manhattan Bridge), an awkward upscale area

o the cobblestoned, quaint variety. Sandwiched

between the river and the BrooklynQueens

Expressway, I fnd Dumbo oddly claustrophobic, but

it oers Manhattan views and a lovely collection o

boutiques, urniture stores, galleries, and pizzerias.

Whatever you decide to do, I hope you stumble out

o your hotel into something interesting!

    FIKA Espresso Bar

    66 Pearl St.

This sleek, minimalistSwedish cae has popped

up in several places in the

    city, and apparently their

    chocolate bon-bons are

    amazing. Ive only had

    their cappuccinos, which

    have never let me down.

    Financier Patisserie

    62 Stone St.

I spent a ew lunch breakssipping coee and writing

    at this French bakery. Its

    one o the several caes

    and restaurants that spill

out onto Stone St. on nice

days, but the interior on its

    own is super cute.

    Fitch Ratings

    33 Whitehall St.

I spent nearly hal a year inthis building on a ull-time

temp gig. I had a decent

view o the water rom my

    22nd-oor desk and took

    a daily hour lunch break

    to explore the fnancial

    district!

    Pier 17

    South St. at Peck Slip

You can pop by this pierand its surrounding

    boardwalk-y area or the

    boats, river views, and

    general touristy good

    times. Save your prime

    bridge vistas or the

    esplanade, though.

    14131110

    Zeytuna Market

    59 Maiden Ln.

    Just a ew steps outside

    your door, this gourmet

    grocery is un to breeze

    through. It also serves

    ood downstairs and, on

    nice days, outside underumbrellas.

    South Street Seaport

    Pearl St. at Fulton St.

    Right by the East River

    and Pier 17, this quadrant

    o cobblestone streets

    bustles with shops,

    restaurants, and bars and

is defnitelyworth a stroll.Think Baltimore Inner

    Harbor meets Richmond.

    Barbarini Alimentari

    225 Front. St.

    I havent actually eaten

    here, but Ive wanted

    to! You can wander in

    and peak at the Italian

    groceries or make your

way to the back, where adelightul courtyard area

    has wait service.

    East River Esplanade

    South St. at Peck Slip

    This walkway and bike

    path winds north along

    the East River and oers

    some o the best views

    o the Brooklyn Bridge.

Sometimes it smells somuch o seawater that

you eel like youre at the

    beach.

    Zibetto Espresso Bar

    102 Fulton St.

    Grab a cappuccino at

    the marble counter o

    this Italian espresso bar

    beore heading out or

the day. (Note: Last time I

    checked it was somewhat

    hidden behind a bit o

    construction.)

    Century 21

    22 Cortlandt St.

    Everyones go-to

    department store or

    discount designer wears,

    this place is a sprawling

    zoo and requires some

    patience and digging, but

    people keep coming or the

    deals.

    The Beekman

    8 Spruce St.

    Also known as Beekman

    Tower, this is Frank Gehrys

    76-story skyscraper and

    one o the tallest buildings

in New York City. You can

catch a glimpse o it rom

    various spots, including the

    seaport.

    City Hall

    2 Laayette St.

    Nestled by the entrance to

    the Brooklyn Bridge, this

    building sits at the oot

o a cute little park that

    flls with people on lunch

    break eating on benches

    and talking on their cell

    phones.
