TURFTALKI was recently asked by a member what verti-cutting is and what does it do. This is just another term for vertical mowing. Vertical mowing is a cultural procedure using vertically oriented blades mounted on a rapidly rotating horizontal shaft. Depending on the depth of cut, different objectives can be met. We typically do this to generate new growth and help reduce grain on greens.
I’ve also been told several times about #2 west green drying up. I was told it had brown dry spots all over it. These spots are mutations/contamination. This is simply an off type Bermuda grass. These grasses, which are all over the older greens, do not have the characteristics needed for a putting green surface. They cannot tolerate low heights of cut or handle the other cultural practices needed to sustain good putting surfaces.
Thanks again,Bob Gruber
From the desk of . . . Chris Harder, Director of GolfHello Plantation Bay members, we are getting close to turning the corner to more comfortable weather. When I started here at Plantation Bay one of my goals as a Golf Professional was to get my team and myself out with you more often, whether it’s to play nine holes, or a fun “beat the pro” contest on a par 3. Another goal was getting the golf shops more well-rounded. We will be getting stronger in the hard goods department carrying Callaway golf equipment. We have done very well doing custom fittings in the Epic driver. We have had more than two members already gain more than 20 yards with the new Epic driver. The great thing about club fitting for members of Plantation Bay is IT’S FREE! If you are unhappy with your current driver performance, come set up a time with me to hit on the Trackman and see if we can find something that may work better for you. We can do this any day at any time. This is a great value-added service we offer to our golf and sport members! As we roll into high season, I want all golf members to save these dates for club events.

As we say farewell to summer, we prepare to welcome back all our snowbird friends.
The summer saw our first par-3 tournament on August 2nd and was received so well we will be looking at doing it again some time in late Fall. Our fall lineup starts with the Ryder Cup starting on October 3 through 6th, followed by our first hamburger lunch on Thursday October 26th at Prestwick. The annual Turkey Shoot will be held on November 15th at CDB and 16th at Prestwick.
We will round out the year with our Christmas Party which will be held on Friday December 1st. We look forward to seeing everyone there.
Ken Marquino, President
PlaNTaTION BaY NINERSThe Niners enjoyed playing summer golf thanks to the assistance of Pro Shop staff. We look forward to the cooler weather and the return of our snowbirds. Our fall luncheon and Business meeting will be held on Monday, October 16 concluding with our May-December birthday celebration. We have a full schedule of inter-club play with the Coastal Niners, beginning with a scramble tournament at Halifax on Wednesday, October 18.
We will host the ever-popular Sadie Hawkins Scramble on Thursday, November 2. This event starts at 3pm, followed by a delicious dinner prepared by the chef at CDB.
Once again, the Niners look forward to participating, as a separate flight, in the PB Club Championship.
Our charitable outreach continues to assist our neighbors in need, including the Espanola community and the foster children at Rose’s Academy. We will hold our annual cookie party, which benefits St. Anne’s pantry, on December 18.
We play a nine-hole format Mondays, 10:15 am, at Prestwick and Thursdays, 9:30 am, at CDB. If you are interested in playing golf and friendly companionship, we encourage you to join the Niners.

Welcome back, snowbirds and welcome to PWGA, new members. Now that summer golf is behind us, it is time to look ahead to what the Prestwick Women’s Golf Association has planned for September, October and November. We kick off the 2017-2018 schedule on Opening Day, Tuesday, October 3 with a better ball of partners game followed by lunch and a short business meeting. Three weeks later, the league holds its annual Paulie Waddle Tournament, honoring the founder of PWGA. Not surprisingly, we have a Black Cat & Orange Pumpkin Match Play on October 31. There won’t be any league play on November 7 because of the Plantation Bay Ladies Member/Guest Tournament. We will hold a Salute to Veterans event on November 14, but won’t be playing on November 21 because of Thanksgiving week. Entering the holiday season, we will hold a Red and Green Match Play event on December 5, followed by a Holiday Scramble with CDBWGA and the Niners.

MEMBERSHIP NEWSTime flies when you are having fun…!
I am sad to see summer go, but happy to have our snowbirds return to Plantation Bay. Our membership is proving to be very strong this year. We are approaching 1000 members in combined categories. The housing sales are a great boost to adding new members; however, your recommendations to family and friends are always the best source, so be sure to tell everyone how much you love it here!
During our peak season, all amenities at the club will be very busy, as usual, so be sure to reserve for the events you want to attend as early as possible. We always make every attempt to accommodate as many people as possible at these events, but sellouts do occur. In that case, request that your name be placed on the waiting list so you can be contacted if there is a cancellation. Please call Frank or Kathryn for reservations.
This past summer, we introduced some new family activities, including the Summer Family Fundays and the Dive-in Movie at Poolside, which were a great success and lots of fun! This fall, we are adding a Pumpkin Decorating Table for Kids at Sunday Brunch in October and a Holiday Movie Night with more events to come in the New Year.
A reminder: If you are not receiving club emails or have not signed up for paperless statements, please contact me for assistance. I will be happy to help you.
Our dedicated team of employees at Plantation Bay wish you and yours a great fall and a wonderful Holiday Season. We look forward to seeing you around the club!

Dave’sTennis Tips By Dave Brown USPTA Master Professional
DO YOu REallY “WaTCH THE Ball?”
I can only speak for myself, but I recently had an experience while playing in a high level USTA Open Father/Son National Grasscourt Championship that absolutely challenged whether I was “really” watching the ball! If you’ve ever followed Wimbledon, especially this year, players complained vehemently about the inconsistencies of the surface. The courts we played on at Boston’s famous Longwood Cricket Club were in excellent condition, but grass is grass, so anything can happen. After numerous miss-hits, late hits, and confounding unforced errors, I had a bright idea: Just watch the ball, Dave!” Guess what? It worked! First, I started to consciously watch the yellow color of the ball since they were fresh new balls out of the can. However, on grass, the balls turn green and start to blend into the surface. So, then I started to watch for the label or the seams on the ball. This isn’t easy because the ball is always spinning very fast. When the sun came out I watched for the bright side (top) of the ball. If I missed an easy shot, or shanked a return, I went right back to trying to see something specific about the ball to watch and look for. By watching the ball throughout the match, I hit cleaner shots more consistently. Fewer mistakes lead to winning more points and in the end, winning the match! It may sound trite, but being a good ball watcher will help you play better, win more, and have fun doing it. Good luck!

Our summer was HOT!!! As we welcome the cooler months ahead, please remember that staying hydrated is still important. Here are some common warning signs of dehydration; thirst, dry mouth, headache, urine color, dizziness, dry skin and blood pressure. Please remember to always drink before, during and after all activities.
Big Question - Are you fit to SURVIVE life’s demands? If you want to accomplish this fit-to-live mission, it requires weaving together five critical elements: mental, nutritional, physical, financial and environmental. A quote from Charles Darwin: “It is not the strongest of the species who survives nor the most intelligent. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.”
Mentally Fit to Live - What is needed is mental resilience- the ability to adapt to life’s stresses, to be able to spring back and effectively adapt to significant adversity. Stress is the great nemesis of resilience. Optimal mental fitness requires calming the storm of stress. Practicing resilience protects the mind and body from moment-by-moment stress attacks. Start with meditation – it is one of the most powerful tools for staying focused and centered.
Nutritionally Fit - Food science experts agree that optimal performance requires a diet that is based on whole foods and one that avoids (or significantly minimizes) refined and processed foods. Processed foods also mess with metabolism. The bottom line – a whole food driven diet is the best way to fuel mental and physical survival skills.
Physically Fit - Functional physical activity is a welcome trend. The functional movement revolution reflects peoples’ desires to maintain strength, endurance, balance and flexibility, in order to continue vibrant and independent lifestyles.
Financially Fit - “Your first wealth is health.” People need to become Healthy as well as “Well”thy!
Environmentally Fit - This requires creating and nurturing a unique ecosystem in the environment where you work, live and play. That means managing relationships with the people, places and things in your home, work and outdoor living spaces. Without daily vigilance and upkeep, chaotic clutter can push self-care to the wayside.
Massage, skin and nail care are also important parts to your overall health, well-being and survival. The Wellness center offers a multitude of services in these areas to meet any of your needs. Call today to schedule your next appointment!

Have You Tried It?Pickleball is more than a game – It inspires us! It creates lasting memories and brings us together. Come out and try it! It is a combination of badminton, tennis and ping pong. A Beginner’s Clinic is offered on Wednesdays 2:00-3:00pm. Paddles and balls are supplied along with instruction on the rules and how the game is played. Pickleball is easy to learn and a sport for all ages. Our Pro Shop also has paddles and balls for sale. Not sure which is best for you? We have demo paddles for you to try before you purchase.
Core Training & Pickleball If you are interested in becoming a better pickleball player, some consideration should be given to the training and conditioning of your core muscles. The core muscles are critical for maintaining the dynamic stability of the entire body and helps to prevent lower back pain!! They are also the key ingredient in maintaining balance, while in pursuit of those
serious angle shots!! A complete and balanced training program for pickleballers should really include adequate CORE training along with flexibility and cross-training.
Your house would not be very stable or balanced if it was built on a foundation of sand! Core strength greatly assists in maintaining the proper “ready” position: knees bent while back on your heels. A potential problem is that many people only focus their training on increasing abdominal strength, a goal to have the six-pack abs. It is truly important to spend equal time training and strengthening the muscles of your lower back and obliques. If this component is missed, you will create an imbalance, which could lead to a chance of injury, instability and lower back pain.
Want to be a better player? Let’s work on those CORE muscles!
Let’s get pickling!
