Helping your child to become a better reader – things to consider

• Look at the cover• Do a picture walk• Think what you already know about the topic• Predict the story line • Anticipate vocabulary • Make connections • Retell the story• Ask “thick” questions:• What is the author trying to tells us• What is the author not telling us • Who is the target audience • How might other people (of other ethnic background, gender, age)

Helping your child to decode a word
