"It was the excellence and enthusiasm of my children’s teachers that first inspired me to join the system.

Those qualities can be found in teachers in every school throughout our district. CMS honors its

commitment to meaningfully impact achievement for every student every day by being intentional in its

development of highly skilled, passionate, professional educators. I am proud to be a part of the work CMS

is doing to establish a better tomorrow for our students and community."

Overview of the District Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) is located in the Charlotte, North Carolina region and provides academic instruction, rigor and support each school day to more than 142,600 students in kindergarten through 12th grade in 160 schools throughout the cities and towns of Mecklenburg County. CMS believes setting high standards for all students creates a greater opportunity for future success – in our communities, within the region and across our diverse and global society. Each day, CMS students are prepared to be leaders in a technologically savvy and globally competitive world.

CMS is proud of its diverse mix of students who represent 160 different countries and various cultural and ethnic backgrounds. CMS also educates, supports and meets the needs of students with learning and physical disabilities.

CMS is one of the largest employers in Mecklenburg County with more than 18,000 teachers, support staff and administrators. CMS is fortunate to have tremendous support from Charlotte’s corporate, faith and business communities and more than 90,000 mentors and volunteers that support learning and instruction in CMS classrooms.

The public school system in Charlotte-Mecklenburg has a rich and intricate history. Built upon the efforts of many individuals who firmly believed in the importance of education to this community, public schools in this area have had a tremendous impact on the growth and economy of the region – as well as the thousands of individuals it has served.

Board of Education The nine-member Board of Education is the governing body of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Non-partisan elections are held in November of odd-numbered years. The Board is comprised of three at-large members and six district representatives. The Board holds regularly scheduled meetings, open to the public, on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month at 6 p.m. at the Government Center (600 East Fourth Street).

Learning Communities Our district has seven learning communities and nine learning community superintendents. In July 2014, schools in the Northeast and West Learning Communities were sub-divided in order to increase instructional leadership support in these Title I high school feeder patterns. The structure of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools learning communities is intended to better support high schools and schools that feed into them. Organizing our learning communities in this way allows many of our students to be in the same learning community from kindergarten until graduation from high school. Such stability helps students to achieve at high levels and graduate on time. The learning communities are: North, Northeast (Garinger and Vance feeder patterns), East, Central, South, West (West Mecklenburg and Harding/Phillip O. Berry feeder patterns) and Project Leadership and Investment for Transformation (L.I.F.T.). Each is led by a learning community superintendent. The learning communities are based on a district-wide commitment to three key beliefs. Schools are the unit of academic transformation and achievement for our students. Every CMS employee and every functional area is crucial to maximize service to our schools. Academic achievement for our students, and improving organizational effectiveness will strengthen service delivery to schools.

Application Process FAQs How do I apply for a job? You need to complete the online application and provide all of the necessary supporting documentation to apply for a position with CMS. Once your application is complete, you can apply to positions through the “Jobs” tab of your application. What happens after I submit my application? After submitting your completed application, it is automatically viewable by the principal. The principal’s have their own timeline as to when they will review applications. You can always check the status of the positions you have applied for by going to the “Jobs” tab of your application and clicking on “Applied Jobs” on the left side of the page. Will I be contacted for a job interview? Principals or a member of their staff will contact the candidates they are interested in interviewing. I submitted an application, but have not yet heard back. Who should I contact? Unfortunately, due to the large volume of applications we receive, we are unable to respond personally to all applicants. Should your qualifications match a staffing need, you will be directly contacted. Can I apply via email, fax, mail, or by directly contacting the hiring department? CMS only accepts applications submitted through the online application system. The advantages of an online application system benefit both the applicants and the school system. The online application system provides more options for applicants and more timely updates to job postings. In addition, applications to postings can be processed expeditiously. What happens to my application after I submit it? Once you apply, you will receive an email confirming submission of your application. All applications are reviewed and screened. Principals will contact candidates who best meet the position requirements. How frequently do you update the job postings? As positions are confirmed, job postings are updated. At our busiest time of the year, this can happen on a daily basis. A job has been posted for a number of months. Is it still open? If a position is on the website, it is still open and the principal is still seeking candidates. Postings are removed once a job has been filled. Can I update my application once it has been submitted? Once you have submitted an application, you will be able to log back in and make changes to your information at any time.

Do I have to re-enter my information every time I apply? No. If your application is up to date, you will just have to apply directly to the positions for which you are interested by going to the “Jobs” tab of your application.

I have problems with my computer "locking up" or I am unable to complete my application because I get kicked out of the system. What should I do? Please email [email protected]
