Read to Self, Read to Someone

& Listen to Reading

Develops and fosters an interest and love for reading

Introduces and motivates students to read a variety of materials

Builds fluency

Allows students to find ‘just right books’

Allows students to discuss books

Builds confidence in students as readers

The More We Read The Better We Read

Page 5: Welcome Grade Three Parents to Curriculum Night! Grade 3 Teachers Mrs. Carvalho Mrs. Dias Miss. Fazio Mrs. Priest-Brown.

Work on Writing Teaches students a variety of text forms, genres, and writing strategies

Helps students become effective communicators of written language (i.e. better readers and writers)

Allows students the opportunity to apply their knowledge of phonics, spelling, and decoding

Allows students to see reading from the writer’s point of view

In helping students to tune their ears—and mouths and eyes, even their fingertips, their nerve endings—to the glorious range of ways they can string words together, we need to encourage them to fool around, to experiment, to break rules, even before they know all the rules. Who ever knows all the rules, anyway? ~Judith Rowe Michaels
