Common Core in the Classroom:

Narrative: Students write about specific events or details. May be real or pretend.

Opinion: Students state an opinion, give examples, and persuade readers about a topic or book.

Informative: Students write about a topic that contains facts.

Building Writing Skills

Beginning• Use capital letters at the beginning of sentence• Use punctuation at the end of a sentence• Understand there are different types of writing

Intermediate• Consistently use correct, basic capitalization and

punctuation• Write in complete sentences• Organize sentences based on topic• Create and publish a variety of writings (narrative, opinion,

informational)• Begin to use voice and understand there is an audience

Advanced• Consistently use correct, basic capitalization and

punctuation• Organize writing with beginning, middle, and end• Uses paragraphs and organizes paragraphs• Uses transitions (First, Second, Last, Next, etc…)• Produces a variety of writings

Ways to Help at Home

1.Lists – dinner lists, grocery lists, to do lists

2.Journals – writing down thoughts, feelings, and events

3.Pen Pals – email or letter writing4.Convince Me Letters –

persuasive writing for students to state what they feel they NEED

5.Everything Books – ongoing writing between parent and child in a notebook

6.Share and discuss writing that comes home from school
