Step I Before Writing the Plan:Self-Reflection Process

Self-reflection is a critical component of professional growth that involves an

analysis of feedback about professional performance and

its relationship to student learning data.

Reflect on that thing you do…. http://ideas.gstboces.org/programs/timer/

A PDP is about that thing you do… every day—you teach and you learn. Every day there are countless moments when you positively impact kids. In the next 5 minutes write SUCCESS NotesWrite 5 post-it notes of things that happened in class today that you are proud of.Write 5 post-it notes of accomplishments this year you are proud of. Write 5 post-it-notes of future work you must do to meet district, building, team, or curricular goals.

Page 11: WELCOME Before we start, please write any questions you have about the PDP Process on Post-it notes and put the notes on the question board. If the question.

On the last page of your PDP Workbook you have a

Page with the Teaching Standards

Walk around the room and find a partner for each of the ODD Teacher Standards. (1,3,5,7,9)Make sure you each put the other person’s name in the box of the standards.Take your seat after you have found five partners.

Step I: REFLECTIONReflect on Teaching Standards:

Take your Post-its & Packet Page 2 and Find your

Standard 1 Partner

Work together and sort your cards on the standards squares-P 2 (Pupil Services Standards include the ten teaching standards plus seven more which are on page 15 of your PDP workbook).

Talk with your partner:• How many cards did you place on each

standard? • Did some cards match multiple standards?• Which standard might be included in your

PDP? Why?

Page 14: WELCOME Before we start, please write any questions you have about the PDP Process on Post-it notes and put the notes on the question board. If the question.

REFLECTION is PDP Step 1Reflect on the teaching standards

Reflect on the district demographicsReflect on team/district/subject area goalsReflect on the amount of time you have for planReflect on the characteristics of a good goalReflect on best teaching practices

In CLASS you will write: REFLECTION & DESCRIPTION of SITUATION

As HOMEWORK: Edit your Reflection and Description of SituationRead and Reflect on “The Teacher Level Factors” by Bob MarzanoDRAFT your GOALRegister on one of the sites for creating an online PDP

Step 1: REFLECTION Reflect on Teaching Practice –Page 3

(p. 11 in IE TOOLKIT)

Highlight materials you plan to review this week to reflect on your teaching practice? Take a few notes about materials you may have.

Page 19: WELCOME Before we start, please write any questions you have about the PDP Process on Post-it notes and put the notes on the question board. If the question.

Part II A: Description of Situation Circle the following info in Ben’s

example—Page 4 Workbook

(Example 2 from page 12 in IE Toolkit)

Description of position Number of years in positionUrban, suburban or rural settingEthnic, special needs, and socioeconomic makeup of schoolBuilding and/or district goals/mission

Page 20: WELCOME Before we start, please write any questions you have about the PDP Process on Post-it notes and put the notes on the question board. If the question.

Step II: Description of Situation-

Page 4(P. 23 in Toolkit)

Why would it be useful to consider the ethnicity, special needs, and socio-economic diversity of your district’s students before writing a PDP?

Page 21: WELCOME Before we start, please write any questions you have about the PDP Process on Post-it notes and put the notes on the question board. If the question.

Where do you get demographic Information?

http://wisedash.dpi.wi.gov/Dashboard/portalHome.jsp

Should you use building or district demographics in your description of situation?

Step IIA: Teaching Situation

Use the Description of Situation Worksheet on page 5 in the PDP Workbook to take notes on your teaching situation.

Page 24: WELCOME Before we start, please write any questions you have about the PDP Process on Post-it notes and put the notes on the question board. If the question.

TIMELINE: Before you set your goal you need to know how much time you have…..

Three years Is the minimum number of years in a PDP

Five Years is the maximum number of years in a PDP

24

Page 25: WELCOME Before we start, please write any questions you have about the PDP Process on Post-it notes and put the notes on the question board. If the question.

What are the steps in a TIMELINE?

See P. 6 & 7 (Page 22 in IE Toolkit)First Year is the first year you are

in a job that counts. You reflect the first year & then write your plan You implement plan for 1-3 years Last Year is the year you finish a Plan and submit it to reviewers

Page 26: WELCOME Before we start, please write any questions you have about the PDP Process on Post-it notes and put the notes on the question board. If the question.

Timeline: What COUNTS?

You must teach 3 of the 5 years of your initial educator license in order to write and implement a PDP and apply for a Professional Educator license

“Teaching” means regularly seeing the same students

A year-long subbing job can be counted

Subbing in various classes or schools cannot

You can write and implement with a five, four, or three year plan depending upon individual circumstances

Page 27: WELCOME Before we start, please write any questions you have about the PDP Process on Post-it notes and put the notes on the question board. If the question.

Five Year Example

Graduated in 2013Year One 2013-14: Reflect/ Write plan

Year Two 2014-15: Implement PlanYear Three 2015-16: Implement PlanYear Four 2016-17: Implement Plan

Year Five 2017-18: Finish Plan/Submit in Jan.

27

Page 28: WELCOME Before we start, please write any questions you have about the PDP Process on Post-it notes and put the notes on the question board. If the question.

Most Urgent Scenario

If you graduated in 2010 and anticipate you will have worked at least three of the five years of your license and have not yet written a PDP you must write it NOW.Your goal must be submitted to your three reviewers asap so you can fulfill a three year timeline. You will need to get a one-year extension to complete plan

Page 29: WELCOME Before we start, please write any questions you have about the PDP Process on Post-it notes and put the notes on the question board. If the question.

Meet with Your Standard 3 Partner

Check out your license expiration date at http://tepdl.dpi.wi.gov/licensing/elo-public-search Talk through your situation since graduation and help each other figure out your timelines.Complete the Timeline Worksheet on Page 6 in your PDP Workbook.

I’m here as your resource

Page 31: WELCOME Before we start, please write any questions you have about the PDP Process on Post-it notes and put the notes on the question board. If the question.

Think about the success cards you completed and the students you have and will have.

Is an idea beginning to form in your head about a direction you may pursue as your goal?

STEP IIB GOAL

31

Page 32: WELCOME Before we start, please write any questions you have about the PDP Process on Post-it notes and put the notes on the question board. If the question.

REFLECT on the Characteristics of a

GoalGoal is so important to you that you would be working toward this goal anyhow.Goal is doable in the time you have.Goal is verifiable-someone else would be able to see the learningGoal impacts you and your students

Page 33: WELCOME Before we start, please write any questions you have about the PDP Process on Post-it notes and put the notes on the question board. If the question.

What must a PDP goal include?

Includes learning for you and your students

Recommended structure:

I will …… so that my students……

Page 34: WELCOME Before we start, please write any questions you have about the PDP Process on Post-it notes and put the notes on the question board. If the question.

Ben’s Sample Goal-P.8 (Page 34 in IE Toolkit)

I will learn the content of the “Literature in a Diverse America” course and plan a variety of lessons so that students will engage with literature that provides diverse perspectives and experience academic success by taking and passing formal assessments on the literature.

34

Page 35: WELCOME Before we start, please write any questions you have about the PDP Process on Post-it notes and put the notes on the question board. If the question.

Professional Learning/Student LearningMeet with your Standard 5 Partner

Read and Discuss two or three of the Sample Goals on page 8 and 9 of your PDP workbook.

Underline the PROFESSIONAL LEARNING component of each goal.Circle the STUDENT LEARNING component.Select one goal you and your partner think is strong and be prepared to share your thoughts.

35

Page 36: WELCOME Before we start, please write any questions you have about the PDP Process on Post-it notes and put the notes on the question board. If the question.

One more look in the mirror…

The Self Assessment Tool for Professional Development Standards on pages 10 & 11 in PDP Workbook can help you identify an area of focus and provides language that will help you write a goal. For example:8. Appropriately use multiple assessment strategies. (Standard 8)Goal: I will research assessment strategies and revise my assessments in Grade 6 math so that students have varied feedback and multiple opportunities to demonstrate learning.

36

Page 37: WELCOME Before we start, please write any questions you have about the PDP Process on Post-it notes and put the notes on the question board. If the question.

So, as you are reading and rating, think about the application of the standard statements in your situation.

12.Understand best practice research in my classroom teaching. (Standard 2)

I will learn about RtI best practices in reading and writing and implement these practices in my RtI class so that students will show growth in the standards when retested on assessments including MAPS assessment.

37

Page 38: WELCOME Before we start, please write any questions you have about the PDP Process on Post-it notes and put the notes on the question board. If the question.

Using the Self Assessment Tool

Answer questions 1-41 by circling a response 0-4Put a star next to ones that you find most engaging and applicable to your situation.

Transfer your scores to pages 12-14 of the PDP Workbook.

Average the scores and look at your areas of Strength (3.2-4), Growth (2.7-3.19), and Priority (1.0-2.69).

38

Page 39: WELCOME Before we start, please write any questions you have about the PDP Process on Post-it notes and put the notes on the question board. If the question.

Pick one of your Strengths identified in the survey and write two or more post-it notes with strategies you use that relate to that standard.

39

Page 40: WELCOME Before we start, please write any questions you have about the PDP Process on Post-it notes and put the notes on the question board. If the question.

Reflect on Best PracticeAs you contributed teaching ideas and strategies related to the teaching standards, you were sharing best practices. As teachers who write PDPs you are engaged in a career-long search for best practice and best practitioners. A common activity in a PDP is reflecting on professional literature. Robert Marzano is a recognized expert in best practice.

Before the next class, please read “Teacher Level Factors” posted on the wiki and respond to the article on the 321 response sheet.

Closing Quote

The brain needs and yearns for time to reflect on and talk about what is going on, and the single most important thing teachers can give themselves in this fast-paced job of teaching is time to reflect.
