issues• Each module is worth 15 credits• You should be registered for 8 modules, 4 per semester• Semester Arrangements 08-09:

The Basics…..
What I do for you…..• First line contact: E-mail, phone or face-to-face
– Answer your e-mails (but not always immediately – depends on workload!)– Face-to-face: Preferably make an appointment – avoid coming to my office on
chance!– Answer QUICK questions at the end of a lecture or in the corridor
• Handle the following:– Course transfers and module changes– Suspension of studies and withdrawals (use the correct form)– Liaise with Dr Peter Kew and Prof Jim Ritchie on formal complaints and appeals
(I can be first point of contact)• Maintain web noticeboard:
– Timetables (and any changes to them)– Advise of Graduate vacancies and further education opportunities (e.g. PhD
studentships)– Post semester results (grades only) for Year 4 MEng– Advise of new policies or guidelines relevant to you
• Tea and sympathy (but bring your own milk)!

• Follow all prescribed module arrangements and assessment requirements (tutorials, tests, coursework and examinations)
• Maintain and regularly check your e-mail account (housekeep)• Notify of any absence, intended or otherwise through clear written
communication, i.e. by self-certification form, medical documentation, letter and/or e-mail as appropriate
• Follow University and School HSE policy at all times, e.g. wearing of PPE when on workshop activities
• Set an example to junior years and remember that you are representatives of the University when on visits, external engagements or interfacing with industrial contacts
The coming year in context…..
• BEng: Year 4 consolidates and extends your grounding in the engineering sciences, design and manufacture, management (some) and other engineering disciplines
• MEng: Year 4 acts as a ‘launch-pad’ for Year 5 and marks your separation proper from the BEng.
MEng specifics…..
• MEng do module B50JA2 Group Project 1 in Semester 2 as preparation for Year 5 work
• Progression to Year 5 MEng from Year 4 MEng requires a final average mark > 55

Advanced Mechanics of Materials 1 & 2 …..• Aims:
– carry out advanced analyses and problems– analyse mechanics of materials where time is a significant variable– use FEA in cases where the geometry and loading are complex and
variable– engage with the findings of recent research in a mechanics of materials

• Content:– Viscoelasticity– Mechanical behaviour of biomaterials (prostheses and implants)– Analytical techniques for biomaterial mechanical characterisation:– Micro- and Nano-mechanics– Advanced FEA– Advanced classical mechanics of materials– Advanced fracture and fatigue– Micromechanics– Functional materials
Dynamics 1 & 2 …..• Aims:
– To provide you with a thorough understanding of vibration theory and an appreciation of its application in an engineering environment
• Content:– 1-D.o.F. systems– 2-D.o.F. systems– Continuous systems– Approximate methods– Control Theory– Acoustics
Fluids 1 & 2 …..• Aims:
– Give you an appreciation of the fundamentals of fluid mechanics applied to aerodynamics, including ideal flows, boundary layers, and aerofoils
– Provide a methodology for analysing one-dimensional compressible flow systems
• Content:– Ideal Flow theory– Boundary layer theory– Aerodynamics– Use of empirical, theoretical, and computational resources for the
analysis of an aerodynamic problem– Isentropic Flow, Fanno Flow, Rayleigh Flow, Shock Waves, Isothermal
Flow and Prandtl-Meyer expansions– Laboratory sessions in nozzle flows with and without shock waves
Thermodynamics 1 & 2 …..• Aims:
– Give you an insight into applied thermodynamics which would form the basis of further study, research or professional engineering in the area of thermodynamics or heat transfer
• Content:– Application of thermodynamic principles– Combined cycles– Availability– Axial flow turbines– Thermodynamic property relationships – Advanced psychrometry– Combustion and chemical reaction– Equilibrium– Heat transfer and heat exchangers– Radiation Heat Transfer
