What the CTE Pathway is NOT

• A call for every student to be a CTE student• An attempt to limit student choice and develop tracks• A call for a separate CTE pathway independent of

other equally viable educational experiences and pathways (Brindisi Bill)

• Abandoning the Common Core State Learning Standards

• Adding more assessments• Fulfilling the interests of Business and Industry

The Jacobs Institute mission is to create the next generation of medical technology to

improve the treatment of vascular diseases—such as heart attack and stroke—in Western

New York and beyond, while creating jobs and developing future leaders.

Page 23: Welcome Back WNY School Counselors Association! Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics & Life Sciences WNY STEM Hub Meeting November 12, 2015.

Brain Boot Camp seeks to educate students about heart attack and stroke, while inspiring

them to consider careers in health and science to give back to the WNY community.

Page 24: Welcome Back WNY School Counselors Association! Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics & Life Sciences WNY STEM Hub Meeting November 12, 2015.

Our program is free, but we do not provide transportation or food.

We don’t know if this prevents all schools from attending.

Brain Boot Camp runs 2 hours, but we have done longer events that include a career panel.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Fundamental Skills of Robotic Surgery (FSRS) curriculum is the method used for training robot-assisted surgeons at RPCI. FSRS was validated in early 2013 as a proven method for teaching robot-assisted surgery. Students embarking on the JRSC 2016 will explore much of the FSRS curriculum supplemented by lengthy pre-course assignments, recitation discussion groups, hands-on lab practicals, as well as attend workshops on ethics, compassion, leadership and teamwork through the program’s unique “Press On!” curriculum. By the culmination of the program in the final challenge, students will be trialed on their developed knowledge, teamwork, and skills utilizing an actual surgical robot (daVinci Surgical System®) in individual and team-based challenges. In conjunction with the final event, ATLAS will host a technology fair where students can speak with professionals in the many branches of STEM as well as compete for prizes with their teams. In 2016, JRSC will branch out to collaborate with the Henry Ford Health System (HFHS) to begin the launch of the second site with the Detroit, MI chapter. In the final event, the individuals selected to compete from HFHS will join the Buffalo chapter at Roswell Park Cancer Institute for the first National JRSC Final Event. The program will begin on June 24, 2016 and culminate on Saturday, July 23, 2016 with a grand finale event that’s open to the public. All participating students who complete the required curriculum will receive a certificate of completion of the Introduction to Robotic Surgery and are eligible to compete for awards and prizes. The top teams and individuals will receive awards based on their performances. Applications must be completely filled out and submitted no later than 5:00pm on January 22, 2016, without exception. The final list of JRSC 2015 participants will be announced on March 4, 2016. Thank you for your interest in participating in this program. We look forward to your success in this year’s event! Yours sincerely,

Eileen O’Brien-Scannell, PhD Khurshid Guru, MD *Co-Chairs of the Junior Robotic Surgery Competition
