Let’s Talk Grammar.

Today we are going to discuss…NOUNS

Common Noun*a general name for a person, place thing, or idea.

*A common noun is NOT capitalized!

Ex. city, boy, books

Identify the nouns in the sentences:

• The girl walked to the bookstore.

• Dogs make the best pets!

• Vampires are better than werewolves.

Examples• The girl walked to the bookstore.

• Dogs make the best pets!

• Vampires are better than werewolves.

Proper Noun (proper, because it has importance)

*a name of a particular person, place, thing, or idea.

*A proper noun IS capitalized! It is important and has a certain level of significance, like your name!

Ex. Baltimore, Friday, Astros, Houston Street, Edward Cullen, Jane Austen, (all names, all important!)

*Practice- Identify all nouns in sentence and label common or proper.1. Antonio emigrated to the United States from

Italy.

2. The homeless woman in the doorway often reads the newspaper.

3. The bicycle had a basket attached to the handlebars.

4. In Philadelphia, look for Independence Hall where the Declaration of Independence was signed.

5. Perhaps your city has many museums, galleries, and libraries where you can spend a quiet Sunday.

Types of Pronouns

*You can add these to the* other noun notes.

Personal Pronoun• Refers to a person, second

person, and third person.

• Function: I, You, He, She, it Example: You have to study

and learn all the material in the law book.

Possessive Pronoun

• Shows ownership or belonging • Function: My, Mine, Ours

Example: Josh received his temporary license by passing 2 tests.

Antecedent• An antecedent is the noun

which is being given a pronoun.

• Ex:–Kirsten took her dog to the vet, but

he was scared.

Reflexive Pronoun

• Reflects an action back on a preceding noun or pronoun.

• Function: himself Example: Mary drove herself to

school the next day.

Intensive• Emphasizes a noun or

pronoun in the same sentence • Function: herself• The manager of the driving

school himself rode with Pat.

Interrogative

• Used to ask a question• Function: Who, What, When,

Where, Why

Example

• What are the requirements for obtaining a driver license?

Trenchant• Definition:

– Cutting, incisive, having a sharp point; sarcastic

• Examples: – The music teacher

made numerous trenchant comments about the band’s performance; clearly she thought the band stunk.

– Julia had a trenchant tongue and was always putting her friends down behind their backs.

Procrastinate• Definition:

– To put off until a later time

• Examples: – Tom would

procrastinate until the last minute to do his homework.

– Wilcox had a procrastinating personality; whatever he started, you felt he was probably not going to finish.

Roster• Definition:

– A list of names; especially of personnel available for duty

• Examples: – The football

program has a roster for both teams.

– Tom saw his name on the duty roster.

Impede• Definition:

– To obstruct or interfere with; to delay

• Examples: – He was only my uncle,

but he always told me no matter what, not to let anyone impede my ambition to go to medical school.

– As a hopeful runner on the school track team, James Carver’s biggest impediment to his foot speed was his short legs.

Forbear• Definitions:

– To refrain from; to abstain; to be patient or tolerant

• Examples: – To forbear your

opinion on any controversial matter until you have first heard all the facts is generally the wisest course of action.

– Henry forbore his decision to close the store, deciding to wait until after the holiday season.

Migratory• Definition:

– Wandering, nomadic

• Examples: – Most American

Indian tribes in the old west were migratory and followed the movements of the buffalo.

– Fruit pickers are migratory workers who move from place to place at harvesting time.

Evade• Definition:

– To elude or avoid by cunning; to flee from a pursuer

• Examples:– Jane always managed

to evade helping her sister wash the dinner dishes by claiming she had homework to do.

– Their romance never really blossomed as their friends expected, because Sarah was the pursuer, but Bill was the evader.

Efface• Definition:

– To rub away

• Examples:– To assure that he

left no clues, the thief effaced his fingerprints from the stolen car.

– Someone vandalized the museum paintings by effacing each one with red spray paint.

Asunder• Definition:

– In separate parts; apart from each other in position

• Examples: – When the earthquake

stopped, and we came up from our shelter, we found the city had been torn asunder and not one single building was left standing.

– Our team lost its unity and became a group of individuals who played entirely for themselves, asunder from each other.

Incite• Definition:

– To arouse to action

• Examples:– When Rodney

decided that his case was hopeless, nothing the doctors could say would incite him to fight his illness.

– Waving a stick at Jerry’s dog only incites him and increases the chance he will bite you.

Demonstrative

• Points out specific persons, places, things, or ideas.

• Function: that, those, this, these

Example: Is that the marker Halle’s front bumper hit?

Relative • Introduces a subordinate

clause

• Function: who, which

Example: The examiner, who administered Al’s test, carried a clipboard.

Indefinite • Does not refer to a certain

person or thing.• Function: Someone

Example: Everyone took lessons through the school’s program.
