Welcome to Our Parish

Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be a part of a Catholic community and a commitment to the life of the parish family. Being a registered parishion-er makes things easier when it is time for infant baptism, school registration, weddings, funerals, affidavits and when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor. We can only do this if you are a registered, active and contributing member in the parish. Please call, visit the office or go online to our website to register.

SCHOOL RE-OPENS FOR

2018/19 ACADEMIC YEAR.

On August 9, 2018, I attended a dinner for new school parents organized by the Principal and staff of Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary School. It was both a

dinner and orientation for new parents to the school. Like a new father to our school community, I attended the din-ner/orientation. They shared the vision, spirit, mission and activities of the school in greater detail. I was excited by what I saw and heard. Incoming Eighth Graders and Student Council members served the dinner and acted as greeters. The new parents were enthusiastic and joy-ful. On Tuesday, August 20th, I had Mass and lunch with the teachers and staff of the school. On Thursday, Au-gust 23, I had the opportunity to welcome both new and returning students and their parents back to school.

These three meetings made me reflect on my own prima-ry education. For the first time in my life, it dawned on me that I am really the product of Catholic and private school education. For my kindergarten, I attended Immaculate Heart of Mary Elementary School. For grades 1 to 4, I attended St. Patrick Elementary School. I finished my elementary education at Arinze Elementary School, which is a private school.

The effect of Catholic education is very clear in my life. Their commitment to and thirst for academic excellence is without a doubt. They are renowned for their emphasis on excellence in academic achievement. That is not all. In addition to following rigorous and innovative academic standards, Catholic school provides a learning experi-ence geared toward educating the whole person. There is additional emphasis on core values. They promote val-ues like self-discipline and responsibility. Students are taught to recognize the dignity of every human being, and the importance of family and community. They teach these values with global implications that prepare the student to go out and create a more just and humane world. For example, the daughter of one of our staff, who is a Catholic school product, just returned from Rwanda, where she helped to improve the economic life of aver-age Rwandan women. The company she is working for has established a factory that will help to lift up the eco-nomic base of local Rwanda women. This is an example of Catholic education.

These benefits and many more are what your child(ren) will gain by attending Assumption of Blessed Virgin School. We have excellent and talented teachers, a great supporting staff, and an experienced Principal. It is a de-cision you will not regret!

MEETING WITH WEDDING COORDINATORS.

On Tuesday, August 21st, I met with our two parish wed-ding coordinators. The purpose of the meeting was to know who they are, and how wedding ceremonies are

executed in this parish. The wedding coordinators are Suzette Mason and Debbie Polchow. They have been in this ministry for about six years, and are happy to be part of one of the most important and historic moments in the life of a couple. They enjoy their ministry and are happy to be of help to both the couples and the parish. The Sac-rament of Matrimony is very important to the Church, and they make sure that the couples understand it. They walked me through the guidelines and procedures for celebrating weddings at Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary Parish. I agree with everything that is done in this parish with regard to weddings.

Here are few questions for you. As of August 30th, we had seven weddings. In 2017, we had two weddings and six convalidations. In 2016, we had seven weddings and three convalidations. What can we do to increase this number? Why is it that more people are not getting mar-ried in the Church? The Church offering for parishioners is eight hundred dollars ($800.00) and for non-parishioners is one thousand dollars ($1,000.00). Is this too high or too low? Before you answer this question, consider the following; (1) What does the Cathedral and other churches in Pasadena ask for? (2) The time office staff spend compiling information necessary for a wed-ding, (3) The use of church lights, (4) The use of Heat/AC, (5) Staff on hand to open, prepare, and clean up af-ter. Now the amount of the church offering? Do you think that the amount of the church offering is what is holding couples back from having their wedding in our parish? How can we increase the number of couples that want to get married in the church?

Thanks, Fr. Mike Ume

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

What a wonderful 50th Anniversary of Re-ligious Profession I had last Saturday! The Mass was amazing! I was especially touched by the blessing that everyone gave me. Afterward, all enjoyed the deli-cious lunch reception. I loved how beauti-ful Msgr. Crean Hall looked with the laven-der tablecloths and matching flower cen-

terpieces. Thank you to all who worked so hard to make everything, Mass and Reception, so special.

I also appreciated your cards, gifts, hugs, kisses and good wishes! So many of my SHCJ Sisters & Associates, family members and personal friends commented on the spirit of the community here at ABVM and how great the entire celebration was. They felt honored to be included.

Please do check out the pictures of the celebration post-ed on our website: abvmpasadena.org. Go to “about” and then “photos.”

Faith Formation News Society of St. Vincent de Paul Assumption Conference

Last Saturday, the Assumption-BVM Con-ference went out on its Homeless Caravan. This evening was hosted by only four mem-bers of our Conference, as these past sum-

mer months provided family visits and vacation days away for many of our Conference members. Much de-served time off, I might emphasize here. Even so, we keep our ministry working.

Still, we go. If only there were but two of us available- we go. We will travel to the places the homeless dwell, in the spirit of Fredrick Ozanam, our founder, who once said: “We will do what Jesus did. We will go to the poor.” Our Conference “will go into the streets; into the parks; into the night air; and into the dark.” We do so because we are called to do so.

We say that we, as useful servants, will never endeavor to seek comfort; rather we strive to realize the joy in serv-ing the Lord through our Mission, by exuding the spirit of Matthew 25:40: “The King will reply, ‘I tell you, whenever you did this for one of the least of important of these brothers of mine, you did it for me!’”

We made friends last Saturday on the streets of Pasade-na. We travelled to “Suicide Bridge” on the advice from “Sam Liberty” and talked to two young ladies who showed the entry point for getting down to the wash be-low. It was too light to find the homeless at that time, but we will make our way back after 8PM when we go out next time.

We met “the Cat Lady,” who had a small litter of kittens and a very protective poodle. She would not give her name and refused our Homeless bag (food and hygiene for women). We meet many different personalities and affirm their dignity by respecting their wishes. We will seek her out again. It takes time to build trust.

“Vickie,” by the Metro at Filmore, kept a tidy plastic cage for her pet mouse. “May I please have two extra bags for my friends,” as she points to two bikes parked next to her. You would be amazed how many of our homeless are polite, respectful, and in need of conversation. And there were others: Carl, Reynolds, Mary, and the “Gentleman in Black,” rolled up in plastic under the free-way, who didn’t speak, but showed gratitude for the food and hygiene kit. In all, we took out 50 bags and returned with 2.

We could have stayed home and watched a movie, visit-ed with spouses, or had some fun. Instead, we visited the homeless. Their gift to us was pure joy.

DID YOU KNOW? Archbishop Gomez Urges Prayers for Victims and New Efforts to Purify the Church The recent reports regarding abuse in the Church serve as a reminder of the importance of continuing our efforts to be diligent in the prevention of abuse in our Church and in society. Our prayers and support are with victim-survivors, their families and all impacted by this evil. Archbishop José H. Gomez urges prayers for abuse victims and new efforts to purify the Church: “We are aware that this is a sad and confusing time for the Church in this country. In recent days and weeks, we have heard new revelations about sin and abuse in the Church. This is a time now for prayer and repentance and a time for examining our conscience, especially for those of us who are bishops and priests. And all of us need to pray for every person who has been hurt by the Church, and we need to work to help them heal. Let us ask the intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary, the Mother of the Church. May she help us to have the cour-age we need to purify the Church and renew our love for holiness and our devotion to Jesus Christ and his Gos-pel.”
