History of the ISTQB1998

The Information Systems Examinations Board (ISEB) that is part

of the British Computer Society developed the Certified Tester

Syllabus. The first Software Testers were certified in 1998.

2002

The ISTQB® was founded by 8 member boards: Austria,

Denmark, Finland, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, the

Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.

2006

keywords necessary for properly describing Syllabi content.

• The official ISTQB Glossary is supported by ISTQB Glossary Application that can be found at www.glossary.istqb.org.

• The Glossary Working Group has a structured approach to creating Glossary terms

Examinations

• A score of at least 65% is required to pass any ISTQB exam

• Questions are multiple choice

• A one hour Foundation Level exam is a prerequisite for all other ISTQB Exams

• Advanced Level exams are three hours long

• Practical experience must be shown before Advanced Level Exams can be taken

• Expert Level exams also include essay questions and there is an annual point system for continuing at the expert level

The ISTQB® Partner Program recognises organisations that demonstrate commitment to software testing certification.

The Program comprises four levels of partnerships. The partnership level of an organisation is determined by the number of certifications achieved by their staff. Higher levels provide higher benefits.

ISTQB members are regular presenters at Conferences organized at the time that ISTQB General Assembly Meetings are scheduled.

The ISTQB® has created the “ISTQB® Conference Network” to

promote the annual events around the world related to the ISTQB®.

The ISTQB® Successful Candidate Register recognises the achievement of candidates who have passed an ISTQB® certification exam and who have given permission for their information to be included.

Unfortunately, due to the high popularity and recognition of the ISTQB® scheme world-wide, counterfeit certificates are now in circulation. The ISTQB® Successful Candidate Register was created to counteract this situation.

History of the CSTB

• Prior to its formation, certification exams in Canada were run by the American Software Testing Qualifications Board (ASTQB).

• In the summer of 2006, the CSTB was approved as a member board in the ISTQB.

• A back office was selected to write our constitution, build a website, and support our activities.

• In January 2007, the CSTB was registered as a non-profit organization.

• A loan was organized from a benefactor in the US for start up money for the CSTB.

• Initially, certification exams were only run as paper-based exams.

• In 2012, Kryterion was contracted to run exams online as well.

Accrediting Training Material

• All Training Providers must have their training material accredited before they can call themselves ISTQB Accredited Training Providers.

• Member boards like the CSTB review training materials for any organization wishing to become an ISTQB Accredited Training Provider.

• The training material is reviewed to determine if it adequately covers the Syllabus content, and provides examples, exercises and answers to exercises.

Importance of Accreditation

To a student, studying for your ISTQB certification with an accredited training provider gives assurance that the organization has been assessed and accredited to provide the necessary training to you to become certified.

To a training provider, having your course accredited means your company name is published on the ISTQB website and on individual member board websites where the training provider operates.

The CSTB at the International Level

• Attend ISTQB General Assembly Meetings held twice a year around the world

• Volunteer on ISTQB Working Groups

• Currently, there are CSTB representatives in the Glossary WG, the TBOK WG, the Marketing WG, and Governance

• There have been more than 7,000 exams run in Canada.

• There have been more than 5,100 certifications issued in Canada.

Translations

• The CSTB is a bilingual organization. All information on our website and a number of exams we run are in both English and French.

• There is always a need for people in the CSTB who are bilingual and willing to translate website information, exam questions, and other materials.

CSTB Moves to PDF Certificates

• In April, 2020, in an effort to be more efficient and eco-friendly, the CSTB began issuing PDF certificates to successful candidates rather than mailing out paper-based certificates.

Remote Proctoring of ISTQB Exams

• When the COVID-19 Pandemic hit Canada, all Kryterion Test Centres were shut down.

• The ISTQB considered allowing remote proctored exams for the first time in its history.

• In June, 2020, the CSTB implemented Remote Proctoring through Kryterion.

CSTB - The Newest TMMi Chapter

• In June, 2020, the CSTB became the newest Chapter of the Testing Maturity Model (TMMi) Foundation.

• The TMMi model looks at software testing at different maturity levels, with the assumption that all organizations start at TMMi level 1 of the maturity ladder that goes up to level 5. The more mature an organization’s testing practices, the higher the level of maturity the organization fullfils. (www.tmmi.org)

Future CSTB Plans

• Canvass all Canadian universities and colleges to determine if they are interested in the ISTQB certification scheme

• Continue to promote the ISTQB at software testing conferences such as STARCanada

• Continue to look for organizations interested in being part of the ISTQB Partner Program in Canada

• Continue to give presentations like the one I am doing today

• Certify as many Gambling Industry Testers as possible!

Volunteering for the CSTB

• The CSTB is always looking for volunteers to help with the organization’s activities (Technical Committee) and to find people interested in being on the Executive Committee, where Directors hold positions for three year terms.
