Raymond Trottor Flexible Learning Space• Designed to give student teachers more classroom

teaching experience and challenge how teaching education is delivered

• Believed to be a first for an Australian university

• Focus on Primary and Early Childhood Education

• Features an inbuilt kitchen, tables that can be written on, indoor garden, as well as the latest technological teaching aids including video cameras to record teaching sessions for later review and discussion.

What’s new in courses?

• Bachelor of Art (Public Relations) from 2010, will be available at our Melbourne Campus at Burwood (previously only available at the Waurn Ponds Campus at Geelong)

• Bachelor of Arts (with Webmedia major) now available at our Warrnambool Campus. Course includes internship opportunities across a range of local businesses

Changes to course prerequisites

VIT (Victorian Institute of Teaching) has recently announced changes to course prerequisites for four-year undergraduate teaching programs

“Careers teachers and others advising students interested in becoming teachers should note that for entry to ALL approved undergraduate (four year) initial teacher education programs, successful applicants will need to have a solid foundation in English and Mathematics. This means that they must have:

• a study score equivalent to at least 25 in one of the VCE English group of studies at Units 3 & 4 AND

• have satisfactorily completed a minimum equivalent to VCE Mathematics Units 1 & 2 (not including Foundation Mathematics)

• This applies to all approved four-year undergraduate programs that prepare primary or secondary teachers” For more info see: http://www.vit.vic.edu.au/.

Economics School Day + Competition• Economics School Day and Competition run in conjunction with Open Days for 2009• Hosted by the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance :

– Event will promote various Economics programs available at Deakin – Competition involves a debate– Provides an idea of the teaching methods employed (in-class economics concepts)– Virtual economics experiment (showcasing APLIA). Aplia is a web-based, interactive

learning system that keeps students engaged and prepared for class.• Over 500 secondary schools across Victoria have been contacted

– Form teams of 3-4 Year 11 students, must write a response to one of two questions– Teams invited to visit Deakin, prizes awarded to winning teams

• Students along with their Economics teachers, School Principals, VCE Coordinators, parents and family members are invited to attend

Rural Grants Scheme - Warrnambool

• The Faculty of Business and Law has a grant scheme to assist rural students commencing an undergraduate degree in commerce, law or management on the Warrnambool Campus.

• Cash grants of $2000 are awarded on the basis of academic merit.

• To be eligible students must be from 'rural areas' and enrol in one of the Faculty's courses on the Warrnambool Campus.

• Rural areas are those within VTAC SEAS Category 6: rural or isolated applicants, which includes Warrnambool and towns in country Victoria and South-Eastern South Australia.

• Students applying for a rural grant must complete a VTAC SEAS application form when submitting their application through VTAC.

Industry-based Learning Program

The opportunity for students to undertake a paid industry placement in a role related to their discipline as part of their degree studies.

Courses offering work experience in industry are highly sought after by employers as they play a critical role in the development of employability skills and job readiness of graduates.

• The industry placements are set up as elective units earning credit points towards the degree

• Duration between 3 - 12 months (equivalent to 1, 2 or 4 credit points).• Full-time or part-time• Supervised and assessed• The work provided is discipline specific• Students are required to pay CSP fees• Students receive a $620+ per week tax-free scholarship

• Applications are accepted three times a year

• Students with a well rounded resume are invited to a screening interview (conducted by the Faculty)

• Students who pass the screening interview are added to the IBL pool to find suitable placements and are offered professional development to prepare them for placements in industry

• Organisations offering industry placements are sent resumes of students meeting placement requirements

• Placement organisations will interview short listed students and choose student(s) – similar to graduate recruitment

Uni and YouAIMS:For students to begin the process of making a good transition into tertiary study. The overarching focus is the students themselves, both as individuals and as a group, within the University and wider community.

For students to consider learning at university from the perspective of different disciplines.

OBJECTIVES:For students to identify their own individual strengths and to develop a range of different academic skills.

For students to gain an understanding of the tertiary education system, and their different roles as learners in a tertiary education setting.
