From The Pastor’s Desk

As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to live lives of passion. Jesus himself tells us that the greatest thing we can do is to love God with all our hearts, all our souls, all our strength. In other words, hold nothing back when you love God. Give everything that is in you to this love for God and for neighbor.

To love with passion: this is the kind of love we need to move towards during our life. Even we don’t fully achieve it; it is this kind of passionate love that is demanded of us. The Church is not just a bunch of nice people who are polite to one another. We need to be people who are utterly passionate about our love for God and for one another. We need to burn with one desire – the desire to love. Everything else in our lives should serve that one desire. If there is anything that is not in keeping with our goal of loving God and one another, then whatever that thing is, it must be put aside.

This isn’t radical as it sounds. Take the case of a married couple. When they were married, the husband and wife both pledged to love one another till death. Now as the years go by, if there is anything that finds its way into the lives of this couple that goes against the love they have pledged to each other, then if that obstacle is to remain, they will soon find themselves in serious trouble. Their marriage would be seriously threatened and perhaps, even destroyed.

At our Baptism, we pledged our love for God and for one another. If we allow anything into our lives that interferes with our love for God or for one another, we are putting our Christian vocation in great danger.

Passion is not just an emotion, as in feeling passionate about someone or something. You can be passionate about collecting baseball cards or passionate about playing poker or passionate about music. But the Lord wants us to be passionate about loving him and one another. Passion is a commitment –a total commitment that shows itself very clearly in the way we live.

How can we move towards a passionate love of God and of one another? That’s rather large question, isn’t it? Where do we start? It all begins with how we see God and how we see one another. Our perceptions move us to action. If I see a dog and perceive it as dangerous, I will react in a very defensive manner. But if someone else sees that same dog and perceives it as friendly, they will react in a completely different way. The way we perceive God and one another is at the heart of how we live and love. This is where the essential role of prayer enters the picture.

We have to walk the path of prayer and awareness if we hope to develop a passionate love for God and others. “Prayer is attention to God’s coming into our life, recognition of the grace of the present hour, and unfailing vigilance for the Lord’s calling. It is the most personal and most personalizing event in human life. Nothing brings people closer together in oneness and solidarity than to call the one God Our Father.” (B. Haring)

Through daily and persistent prayer, we allow God to shape us into people of love and compassion. May we all have the courage to surrender ourselves into the loving hands of God.
