It Takes All Kinds The tle of this arcle is suggesve of the panoply of atudes and characteriscs of humanity. While we might be most likely to use the cliché in reference to what others like or don’t like, the fact is people are different! And they express their differences in their lifestyle choices. As the generaons march on, the older generaons are oſten shocked at how values have changed. But they haven’t changed all that much. But realize this, that in the last days difficult mes will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boasul, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these. 2 Timothy 3:1-5 Paul could have been describing the very people who will make today’s headlines, but Paul never envisioned that the wait for the Lord’s return would span two millennia. The kinds of people he described were the contemporaries of Timothy, thus the admonion: “Avoid such men as these.” As I write this arcle, Houston’s ABC NEWS 13 is running live video of a raid that is currently underway at the Catholic Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston by officers of the Conroe PD, Montgomery County DA’s office and Texas Rangers, among others. They executed a search warrant for documents related to the invesgaon of Father Manuel La Rosa-Lopez. The lurid details of what he is accused of is not the point of this arcle, but he and his kind are illustrave of what Paul menoned to Timothy. Among the fatal character flaws that Paul lists is “holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power” (v. 5). “Form” translates a Greek word that is the act of fabricang something to a parcular shape. Paul says that some will have the form of godliness or religion so that they appear outwardly as devout or holy. But the form they present to the world is just a hollow shell or mask of hypocrisy. They have denied the power of godliness. They did not allow themselves to be transformed by the power of godliness. They look the part, and perhaps dress the part, but their hearts, their values and their pleasures have nothing to do with godliness and everything to do with the things menoned in the first four verses of the text. Please noce that Paul needed to unmask such people so that Timothy and others could see what lies hidden beneath their form of godliness. In other words, it’s not so easy to recognize such character unless one is aware and looking for it. Paul does not assume that Timothy is prowling the worst neighborhoods and might be unaware of the evil environment he surrounds himself with. Paul’s appeal assumes that Timothy desires friendships with “good people.” In Timothy’s world, such were oſten considered “good people.” To the world, “it takes all kinds” might oſten be expressive of the polically correct posion of embracing all people. But Paul offers a very polically incorrect command to avoid such men. “Avoid” literally means to shun or turn away from. The kind of people we should associate with are those who have been transformed by godliness. The fruit of the Spirit is apparent in their lives. In them you will see love, joy, peace, paence, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Gal. 5:22,23). – DC
