Welcome Welcome to our current edition of Music Notes, the WELB Music Service newsletter. The wonderful events and activities showcased here reflect some of the successes of our talented young musicians. There are currently more than 13,000 pupils involved in weekly music-making activities with the Music Service. Our pupils are involved in many musical events and we will let you know where you can hear them perform. Please encourage and support them whenever possible. FLive Fermanagh Live Festival WELB students were involved in the launch of the recent FLive festival. Some 180 primary and post-primary string pupils took part in masterclasses with the internationally-renowned Benyounes Quartet, regarded as one of the most engaging, dynamic and exciting young quartets to have emerged in recent years. The Music Service is particularly proud of the fact that one of our past-pupils, Kim Vaughan, is the cellist with the Benyounes. Pupils were guided through a selection of pieces and various aspects of string- playing fundamentals in preparation for the evening’s public performance. The audience was entertained by beautiful string sounds in a programme of popular music as well as some virtuoso playing from the Benyounes Quartet. Culture Night The Strule Arts Centre in the heart of Omagh was a hive of activity on Culture Night in September 2014 with a variety of entertainment celebrating our wide and diverse cultures. The evening proved a great success with our WELB pupils performing alongside many other artists including Hungarian, Irish and Scottish Dancers, RSPBANI Young Pipers along with traditional Celtic Folk Band Camhanach, Omagh Protestant Boys Melody Flute. The evening also included Short Film Screenings, Art Workshops, BBQ, face painting and balloon modelling. Live Music Concerts In September 2014 the Music Service Staff Orchestra performed a series of Live Music Concerts in Derry, Omagh and Enniskillen for our new pupils and their families. The concerts provided an opportunity for hundreds of young people to experience the excitement of a live orchestra. The orchestra performed a wide selection of pieces interwoven with a children’s story of musical curiosity and exploration. It was not just the audience who were delighted by their concert experience. The music teachers found it rewarding too. Irish Horn Day Some of our WELB pupils will be participating in a jam packed day of French Horn fun on Sunday 5 October in Belfast. The day is open to all French Horn players of all abilities in Ireland, both North & South to create a unique Irish Horn Sound. The event will take place at the City of Belfast School of Music and features the Horn sections of the Ulster Orchestra and members from the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. This is sure to be a fantastic day out.

WELB Youth Orchestra Summer School Residential The University of Limerick invited the WELB Youth Orchestra to return for a residential course at the Irish Chamber Orchestra Campus from 25-30 June 2014. The Senior Youth Orchestra comprises approximately 100 musicians drawn from schools throughout the Western Board area. The Youth Orchestra residential coincided with the Blas International Summer School for Irish Traditional music. The campus was abuzz with musicians and music. Our students attended workshops and performances delivered by renowned performers and exponents of folk music including the great Steve Cooney and Eileen O’Brien. After 5 days of intensive rehearsal, the Youth Orchestra played two concerts including one in the historic 12
th century Limerick Cathedral and
a return-home concert in Enniskillen. The audiences enjoyed first class performances of a diverse and challenging programme featuring LArlésienne Suites 1 & 2 by Bizet and the Waltz from “Masquerade” by Khachaturian. Lighter pieces included the Lord of the Rings by Howard Shore and favourite themes from 007. As in previous years, a traditional group, comprising members of the orchestra, played a selection of Irish and Scottish music. Both performances received standing ovations! Omagh Summer School Omagh Academy GS was the venue for our Omagh Summer School running from 1 – 3 July 2014. 80 young musicians joined together to explore music for Wind Band and String Orchestra. Both groups joined together to perform the Gershwin classic, Summertime, and the famous Batman theme. The young musician provided a rousing finale to a wonderful concert in front of very proud parents and families.
Derry Summer School The North West Teachers’ Centre was the venue for our Derry Summer School running from 1 – 3 July 2014 culminating with a performance at the Playtrail venue. The Playtrail is a unique outdoor play and educational facility located within the grounds of Belmont House and Foyle View Special Schools. It offered a sense of occasion with a friendly and family-orientated atmosphere. The impressive performance from our young musicians was the icing on the cake!
