Weiser River Trail 50K Relay and Solo

APRIL 28, 2012

The 3rd

Annual Weiser River Trail 50K Relay and Solo was held on April 28, 2012. Weather

was in the upper 30’s at start time in Council, Idaho and warmed into the low 60’s by finish time

in Midvale, Idaho. The course was in good condition despite rains earlier in the week.

Maintenance crews had done some grading and compacting on sections of the trail that week.

Friends of the Weiser River Trail is a private, non-profit organization that manages and

maintains the trail. Use of the trail is free to the public and open year round for non-motorized

use. Several events are held each year to promote the trail including running, equestrian, and

bicycle events. Permits to use the trail for events are available.

Times for all participants are available at www.bluecirclesports.com which we used for

registration. Blue Circle Sports also provided race day timing and equipment support.

The race was presented and managed by Friends of the Weiser River Trail. Sponsors for the race

were recruited from local and corporate sources. Photos of the event are located on Weiser River

Trail facebook page. There were 188 runners participating, an increase of 30% over last year.

Shu’s Idaho Running Company was the major sponsor for this race. Shu’s provided technical

support, race bibs, and place prizes for all race categories. This year, Shu’s sponsored the

completion award for solo runners which was a railroad spike with an engraved plate fastened to

it. It was a unique award signifying the accomplishment of the solo runners. Friends of the

Weiser River Trail sponsored the completion medal awarded to each relay runner.

Sponsors donated items for a prize drawing. The prizes included subscriptions for Road ID and

Trail Runner magazine, Road Noise vests (2), Sierra Trading Post Headlamps (4), REI day pack,

Les Schwab alignment service and travel safety kit, Hells Canyon Adventures Wild Sheep Tour

tickets, Shu’s IRC Hydration Pack, Cabela’s aluminum water bottles (6), plastic water bottles

(2), and numerous hats and can coolers.

Hammer Nutrition joined the event this year as a sponsor for the aid stations. Hammer Gel was

provided to each runner in their packet. HEED and Hammer Gel were both provided at each aid

station and at the finish line.

Meadow Gold Dairy provided chocolate milk for aid stations and the finish line. Friends of the

Weiser River Trail provided a variety of fruits, nuts, vegetables, and sweets for the aid stations.

Lunch at the finish line was provided by Friends of the Weiser River Trail and consisted of

breakfast burritos and all the trimmings which was well received in the cool weather. Lunch was

served to 241 people.

Race Packets for each runner contained information and advertisements and coupons from

sponsors. The Weiser River Trail brochure was included to provide information on the

recreational benefits of the trail and to recruit new members. 220 Packets were prepared. Extra

packets will be distributed at the June 9 WRT Bike Ride.

Support from other organizations and vendors was important to our success. One Eye Jack’s

prepared a spaghetti feed the night before the race. The Fair Board in Council let us use their

facilities for camping Friday night and race day staging. T-shirts for the event were printed by

Big Sky Sportswear of Fruitland, Idaho. The City of Cambridge, Idaho sponsored a permit from

Idaho Transportation Department that allowed us to stop traffic on Highway 95 at the Cambridge

Trailhead so runners could cross safely without delays. Local certified flaggers were hired to

help us with that crossing. Idaho Transportation Department provided guidance for the traffic

control needs. Traffic control signs were rented from Specialty Construction Supply in

Meridian. Valleywide REACT provided communication at aid stations and mobile patrols

communicating through a repeater that helped us keep track of racers. Andrew Rostenberg

provided masseuse services at the finish line. Cambridge Litho did all of our event printing.

24/7 Sign Shoppe produced our event banner with logos of Friends of the Weiser River Trail,

Blue Circle Sports, and Shu’s Idaho Running Company.
