2nd Largest City in China (over 13 million people)

Beijing hosted the Summer Olympics in 2008

About Beijing

Tiananmen Square located at the center of Beijing, with an area of 98 acres and a capacity of up to one million people, is the world's largest public square. The Forbidden City, located in the heart of Beijing, China was the home of the emperors. Now known as the Palace Museum, it is to the north of Tiananmen Square. The Great Wall of China can be found in the northwest and north of Beijing.

Facts about The Great Wall

• Made of masonry, rocks & packed earth• Stretches across the mountains in Northern China• 15-30 Feet Thick• Up to 25 Feet Tall•About 4,000 miles long• Was built over a 2,000 year time period• Constructed by hand

School Days in China

Start in September, and go for 9 months (the same as you!)

They wear uniforms

Vacations in October and May

Children attend school for at least 9 years

Parents must pay a small fee for books, food and heat

Tradition: Tiger Hats for Newborn Babies

When babies are born in China they are given a red Tiger hat to wear.

The Tiger hat is meant to keep away evil spirits and to bring them good luck.

The hat is made of fancy silk.
