Help Welcome and Connect People to our Parish Family

The Invite-Welcome-Connect council is looking for members to join our shepherding team. This team ensures that visitors to our church receive a warm, personal welcome to our parish. Our members serve as guides to newcomers as they find their place in our community. This might include a phone call, an invitation to a church event you will be attending, or an offer to have a cup of coffee together. The family feel of St Matthew's is one of our strengths and we need help making sure that new and prospective members experience this for themselves as soon as they visit our church. Our first shepherding meeting will be May 9 at 7:00 pm in the Youth Center. If you would like to join us, please contact Mandy Hubbard at [email protected]. Prayer on the Trail

On the heels of a really successful Ashes on the Trail, Fr. Christian and Rev. Brin have continued to offer prayer along the hike and bike trail on Wednesday mornings. Join them at 7:00 am for a run, or at 8:00 am for coffee and prayer with our neighbors. This is a great way to stretch our faith a little in Lent. Submitted by Christian Hawley

St. Matt’s, St. Matt’s, What Do You See?

“Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see? I see a red bird looking at me.” What do these words from the famous child-hood book by Bill Martin, Jr. and Eric Carle have to do with St. Matthew’s?

Last year, a friend of St. Matt’s, Johanne Ibsen Wolford, told the Endowment Committee what she saw—individuals struggling with homelessness in this neighborhood—and asked the church for a Permanent Endowment Fund grant of $1,000 to provide starter funding for her idea, Helping Our Neighbors (HON), an initiative to serve this population. In this case, the funds were to go toward starting periodic events where HON partnered with area businesses to provide showers, haircuts, and toiletries to those in need. St. Matt’s funded the costs for the first two events.

The EC recently received an update about HON’s ongoing activities from Dineen Majcher, who served as the EC liaison for this grant. Since our grant to HON was fulfilled:

HON has held 3 additional events, adding new sponsors. Although getting information to this population is challenging, word is spreading and HON is now serving 3x the number of individuals served at the initial two events St. Matt’s funded.

Growth indicates a level of trust growing between HON and area persons that are homeless. Through the events, the individuals served are sharing their live stories and struggles with HON.

Through this shower/haircut ministry, HON has been able to develop enough trust that some individuals have been willing to accept HON coordinating some social services for them. Success stories include helping persons with Social Security issues, helping obtain work, and helping obtain housing.

HON’s founder reiterated that the initial donation by St. Matthew’s really was the seed money that enabled her to begin to know and work with these folks.

Johanne saw individuals struggling with homelessness right here where she lives. Is this a complex issue? Yes. Was her idea to provide a shower and a haircut going to solve this issue? No. Was it a simple act of kindness, dignity and respect worthy in and of itself? Yes. And now, Johanne’s initiative it is taking on a life of it’s own, becoming a bridge to more transformative change.

Something in Johanne said, “Johanne, Johanne, what do you see?” Now, through the HON ministry, Johanne can safely say, “I see the Holy Spirit looking at me.”

So now, do you see the connection between this book and our congregation? Johanne is “just a regular person.” She works full time. But what she saw nudged her—pushed her—into action. And it’s making a difference.

St. Matt’s, St. Matt’s, what do YOU see?

Submitted by Ann O’Connell, Endowment Committee Chair. The EC considers grant requests on a rolling basis during the calendar year, until all funds have been distributed. For more information, go to www.stmattsaustin.org/About/endowment-fund.html

Emptying out week!

Thanks to those of you who brought soaps, shampoo, shaving cream and other items like toothbrushes and toothpaste that were piling up in your drawers. It would be wonderful if the rest of you could bring your extras, too. Our thanks to St. Matt’s wonderful Youth Group, who consolidated the last lot into care bags for Caritas’ clients.

This week’s non-perishable food item needs for the Caritas Food Pantry are:

Hamburger/tuna Helper-type meals Spaghetti sauce (in plastic containers) and dried pasta noodles Canned ham Canned mixed vegetables Canned spinach Cooking oil Canned fruit Peanut butter Cold and hot cereals

This week’s item for our St. Matt’s Children for Caritas Children program is canned spaghetti.

If bringing an item each week doesn’t work for you, you may also purchase a food item by leaving a $1.00 or more in the Caritas money box on the table in the Caritas Corner of the Commons.

Thank you. Submitted by Jane Baxter Lynn

Offshoot Small Groups—New Groups Begin on April 30! Look for Updates Soon!

Offshoots small groups are a chance for parishioners to share our passions with one another and our neighbor. This initia-

tive grows out of the idea that wherever Christians are present, the body of Christ is revealed. So have some fun with these

groups, get to know your fellow parishioners, and invite a friend to “come and see” a little glimpse of the Kingdom. If you

want to form your own Offshoot with support from church staff and clergy, email

[email protected] and [email protected].

Formation of groups is a rolling process throughout the year, so keep your ideas coming!

Family Fellowship: Coffee, Conversation, and Children’s Lego Sunday School! Sundays | 9:30–10:15 am | Huffman Hall

Family Fellowship on Sunday mornings is a wonderful time for families to connect! It is a casual and relaxed “conversation time” so that we can all get to know one another better. Children can participate in Lego Sunday School, Children’s Choir, or play in the Huffman Nursery. We invite families of all ages to join us before church. We gather in Huffman Hall from 9:30 – 10:15. Building on our Lego-based Sunday School curriculum from last semester, Travis and/or Susan will be present a new Bible story each Sunday. Clergy will pop in, too, from time to time. We are hopeful that this will give folks a chance to con-nect and get to know one another better. If you have a child who likes to sing, consider having them join our children’s choir from 9:45 – 10:15 (more information below).

The Mix (3rd, 4th and 5th Graders)—Calling All Movie Lovers

Join us this month for a Movie with a Message! Sunday, April 23 from 4:00 - 6:00 pm in the Youth Center. What will the movie be? It is a surprise! We will watch a (somewhat) current movie and search for Christian themes throughout the show. So often we watch a movie and see it at face value—this time we will dive a little deeper and find some cool parallels. Snacks, drinks and fun provided! Bring a friend or two . . . the more the merrier in our Youth Center Theater.

Family Fellowship and Children’s Choir are on break for Easter.

We’ll resume on April 23!
