Fireworks are synonymous with summer. They mark special occasions, festivals andwarm-weather holidays like IndependenceDay. When handled by professionals, fire-works can be quite the spectacle. However, iflit by amateurs, fireworks can be very risky.
Though they offer awe-inspiring views, fireworks can be dangerous. According todata collected in 2008 by the Centers forDisease Control and Prevention, an estimated7,000 people in the United States were treat-ed in emergency rooms for injuries sustainedfrom fireworks during the period of June 20to July 20, 2008. Nearly half of all peopleinjured were children under the age of 15.Most injuries occurred to young people underthe age of 20.
The Canadian Hospitals Injury Reportingand Prevention Program states that fireworksinjuries often occur around the injuredpatients' homes, and fireworks injuriesrequire hospitalization far more often thaninjuries that do not involve fireworks.
All types of fireworks have an inherentdanger, even sparklers. Sparklers burn atmore than 1,000 F and can ignite clothingvery quickly. Those who take an active roll inthe lighting and shooting of fireworks aremore prone to injury. The most commoninjuries include burns and injuries to the eyescaused by cuts and foreign objects lodged inthe eyes.
Although fireworks injuries are common, they also are largely preventable. The follow-ing are a few safety tips aimed at helping peo-ple avoid injury when enjoying fireworks dis-plays.
Keep your distance. It is important forall people watching fireworks to keep theirdistance from explosives. Even the best-madefireworks can sometimes veer off course andfly into spectators. The further the distanceaway the display is, the better chance for safe-ty.
Avoid amateurs. Professional fireworkscompanies know the ins and outs of fireworks
and often have safety procedures in place.Fireworks may be ignited remotely by a com-puter or an electronic fuse device, keepingpeople away from ground zero. An amateurmay not have the dexterity or skills to getaway from the lit firework in time. Whenenjoying fireworks, just make sure the personputting on the show is a professional.
Exercise caution around fireworks. Some people construct their own fireworksfrom spare parts or try to up the ante byadding an accelerant to achieve a biggerboom. These practices are dangerous and canlead to highly unpredictable explosions. It'snever good to make your own fireworks show, but if you find yourself at a party wheresomeone is experimenting with fireworks, exercise extreme caution.
Fireworks can be a fun spectacle when han-dled by professionals in a safe manner.Families can consider watching a city- ortown-sponsored fireworks display instead ofrisking injury with at-home pyrotechnics.
Fireworks can be a wonder to behold ... forhumans. Pets, however, may not be so enam-ored with the booms, crashes and bumps inthe night.
Dogs, cats, even small rodents oftenbecome creatures of habit. They like knowingthey are secure and what's to come next.Surprises and extraordinary events can putpets on edge.
Loud noises often spook pets. Everythingfrom noisy trucks to thunderstorms to low-flying airplanes may scare a pet, possiblyleading to unpredictable behavior. Summercan induce anxiety in pets, especially whenpeople celebrate with fireworks and boister-ous parties.
Many cats and dogs will try to hide whenthey hear fireworks or other loud noises. Petparents can play off of this behavior and cre-ate safe sanctuaries to which their pets canretreat to ride out the "rockets' red glare andbombs bursting in air." The following are afew tips to reduce pet anxiety when night fallsand fireworks start going off.
Set up a comforting den. If your dog or
cat sleeps in a crate, cage or a special nook inthe house, use this area to establish a safehaven. Put comfortable pillows or mats on thefloor and envelop the cage or spot with blan-kets. These items will help mask the sightsand sounds of outdoors. Put in familiar toysor even one of your shirts to establish familiarand comforting scents.
Keep the windows closed and thedrapes drawn. Minimize what cats and dogscan see or hear. If they don't know what isoccurring outside, they likely won't be fright-ened. However, many pets have very goodhearing, so some of the louder fireworksmight still be audible.
Put on soothing music. Throw on ashow or songs that have steady, repetitivebeats. This, too, will help mask the unpre-dictable sounds of fireworks.
Walk the pet in early evening. Makesure you walk your dog prior to sunset toreduce the liklihood of getting caught out-doors with fireworks being set off. If pets areallowed to roam in the yard, bring them insidebefore the sun sets.
Don't punish the pet. Stressed pets maysoil indoors, cower, fail to respond to com-mands, or engage in destructive behavior. It isimportant not to admonish the pet simplybecause he or she is scared. Doing so mayonly make the situation worse.
Don't comfort the pet, either. It may betempting to sit and cuddle a dog or cat andreassure him that everything will be alright. This fawning over the pet may only help toreinforce negative behavior and the pet'sinability to overcome the fears himself.
Talk to the vet. If fears are paralyzingyour pet, talk to the veterinarian to see ifbehavior therapy or short-term medicationuse may help assuage fears. Some vets pre-scribe a mild tranquilizer to help pets getthrough specific fireworks displays.
Because fear can cause skittishness, manypets end up running away from home duringsummer fireworks displays. It is imperative tokeep identification on your pets at all times sothey can be returned promptly if found.

1. To make this flag cake, we used a 9x13-inch cake (we baked a Silver White Cake). You'll need two pints of strawberries, one pintof blueberries, and Fluffy Boiled Icing. Washthe berries and drain them on papertowels.Stem the strawberries and cut theminto halves.
2. Spread the icing generously over the cake.(Whipped topping or whipped cream can beused in place of Fluffy Boiled Icing, but thefinished cake will need to be refrigerated.)Fluffy Boiled Icing holds up well at outdoorpicnics and barbeques.
3. In the top left-hand corner of the frostedcake, arrange the blueberries into an outlineof a rectangle that is 5 inches wide and 4 inch-es tall. Press the berries down into the frost-ing.
4. Fill the blueberry outline in with theremaining blueberries. The blueberries lookbest if placed in rows: the icing between themresembles stars.
5. Place strawberry halves cut-side down inrows going across the cake horizontally. Thebottom stripe of the flag is red, so start the
first row at the bottom. Be sure to press theberries down into the frosting so the stripeswill not be raised above the fluffy frosting. (Ifyou want to be technically accurate, there are13 stripes on the flag.)
6. Serve any leftover berries with the slicedcake and ice cream. For a stunning holidayeffect, place a couple of sparklers into the topof the cake. When darkness falls and fire-works begin to burst, light the sparklers andserve the cake during the festivities! Related links:
