All these concepts are expected to be reinforced at home through daily practice. BIG Question:What makes the sea so important? In Unit 4, your child will explore the big question. Your child is invited to think about the importance of the ocean to people, animals and plants (all living things). Your child will also read stories about life beside, on, and under the sea, as well as learn about seashells, sailing, submarines and coral reefs. MATHEMATICS 1. Vocabulary: add, in all, one more, more than one, plus sign (+), equal sign (=), 2. Concepts: Recognize and write numbers 0 to 10. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-10. Count by ones from 1 to 100. Count to answer “how many?” questions about as many as 10 things; given a number from 1-10, count out that many objects. Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds, (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations. Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g. by using objects or drawings to represent the problem. ENGLISH 1. Vocabulary: sails, bridge, lighthouse, blue, fish, 2. Concepts: Recognize double vowel sounds ‘oa’ and ‘ie’ – boa t, soa p, goa t, pie , tie , lie . Identify the initial sound as being the first / beginning sound in a word – d og, p in, h en, c at, s nake, r ock). Identify the medial sound as being the letter / sound in the middle of a word – ha t, be d, fi sh, lo g, cu p. Identify the final sound as being the last / ending sound in a word – wolf , kit e, pan , bus , fox , mom . Focus on ‘L Blend’ words – fl ower, cl ock, pl ane, bl ack, sl eep; and ‘R Blend’ words – tr ain, fr og, br ead, cr ib. ‘S Blends’ are usually at the beginning of words – st ar, sw ing, sp ider, sm ile, sl ide. Recognize and produce rhyming words – mouse-house, bat-cat, pin-fin, clock-block. Count, pronounce, blend and segment syllables in spoken words – bus =1, rock/et =2, Sa/tur/day =3. 3. Writing: Write names, letters, words and sentences in the correct formation, using three lines and punctuation. 4. Book Skills and Comprehension: What is an author (person who writes the story)? What is an illustrator (a person that draws, that colors, that paints the illustrations, or who takes the pictures)? What do the pictures tell you about the story?
