Texas Women’s BB game Deadline approaching—

Don’t forget to order your tickets for St. Matthew’s Day at the Erwin Center to see the Texas Women’s Basketball team take on West Virginia. It is a 3:30PM game and a great way to spend New Year’s Eve afternoon with your family and the St. Mat-thew’s family. You only have to stay in for a moment—but then you have boasting rights that you’ve done a Polar Bear plunge! This is a New Year’s tradition for many families and friends. Thanksgiving for Ministry: The Reverend Jerry Chapman

On behalf of the entire St. Matthew’s Community, we want to extend our deep, heartfelt thanks to the Rev. Jerry Chapman, for his years—18 years!—of devoted leadership of the 7:00 am Wednesday morning Service of Holy Communion. For al-most two decades, Jerry has served as the primary celebrant for a community of dedicated, faithful souls. Congregants share fond memories of excellent preaching on the Saints of the Church, and regular fellowship and conversation at Molcas restau-rant following. A committed member of The Rotary Club of Cedar Park, Jerry has been selected as the District 5870 Gover-nor for Rotary Year 2018-2019. These substantial responsibilities will require regular travel across the state, and nationwide. Jerry will continue to assist on Sundays as he is able. For the time being, the 7:00 am Wednesday Service will be on hiatus; with the strong possibility of other, regular Eucharistic services being offered in the future. We continue to invite all interested in a weekday Eucharist to our 12:00 pm Wednesday Service of Holy Communion & Public Healing. Soul Series News

Over 180 parishioners and Austin music fans enjoyed the 4th Annual St. Matthew’s Christmas Party at Iron Cactus on December 17. It was a happy night of rock n’ roll, church hymns, and seasonal music sung by some of Austin’s finest musicians. I want to thank Robert Harrison, my friend and front man of Cotton Mather, for his deep commitment to offering a highly professional rock music show that included something of the season for every-one. He and his band were really great. He was joined by his daughter, Zoe, and his son, Declan, for a brief set of family singing. Also on the bill was jazz guitarist Craig Marshall, singer-songwriter Jenifer Jackson and singer-songwriter Miranda Dodson. Miranda declared that the sales proceeds of her Christmas CD for sale after the show would go to SAFE Austin, the successor non-profit agency created in the merger of Safe Place and Austin Chil-dren’s Shelter. She reported to me that she sold $450 in CDs at the show and that Dell Inc. matched her donation to SAFE so the agency actually received $900. It was a good night. The booking for the Spring 2018 season has not begun but you should be hearing something about the next season in February 2018. Submitted by Merrill Wade

We invite you to attend the Annual Meeting of St. Matthew’s Parish in Huffman Hall, on Sunday morning, January 21, 2018.

Merrill will call our Annual Meeting to order at 9:00 am sharp. We will present the ballot to elect five (5) new mem-bers to the Vestry, three (3) new members to the Endowment Committee, three (3) new members to the Memorial Garden Committee, and two alternates for the 2017 Diocesan Coun-cil (below you will find details about those elections).

At 10:10 am, we will suspend or conclude the business meeting for our normal Celebration of the Holy Eucharist in the Sanctuary, which will be a combined service with the Family Service. After the Eucharist, we will gather for a lunch prepared by Chef Robert Mayberry and church volunteers. If we haven’t fully completed the election process, we will conclude that process in the lunch hour.

If you’re interested in standing for election for the abovemen-tioned positions, please complete a Candidate Information Sheet (available in the office or at this link: http://stmattsaustin.org/About/vestry-elections.html) and return it to Communications Coordinator Christine Havens at [email protected]. The Candidate Infor-mation Sheet includes the eligibility criteria for election to church offices. In order to be placed on the ballot in advance of the election, we ask all nominees to have their information to Christine no later than Wednesday, January 17, 2018. Oth-erwise, a nominee will have to be nominated from the floor during the Annual Meeting.

We would be grateful this Christmas week if you would remember to bring one non-perishable food item with you this Sun-day. If you’d rather, you are welcome to leave a $1 or more in the money box in the Caritas Corner of the Commons, the pro-ceeds from which are used for buying meats and other perishable food items. Donations of HEB gift cards would also be wonderful so that families can splurge a little this Christmas.

This week’s item for our St. Matt’s Children for Caritas Children program is applesauce.

This week’s non-perishable food needs are:

Spaghetti sauce (in cans or plastic bottles only please) Canned mixed vegetables Canned ham Hamburger/Tuna Helper Meals Canned fruit salad or other fruit

Right now the Caritas Pantries have plenty of tuna and black beans. There is also a need for shaving cream and shampoo.

Year-end Endowment Committee Update

The St. Matt's Endowment Committee oversees the St. Matthew's Permanent Endowment Fund, making sure the fund is financially healthy for future St. Matt's generations and also providing seed money grants for mission and ministry both within the parish and outside its walls. 2017 proved to be a fruitful year for the Endowment in many ways. The Committee was honored to provide grants for the successful fall Living Compass program, the sold-out Hope & Sesame refugee dinners, to honor the victims of Sutherland Springs Baptist Church, as well as invest in Staff Development and Outreach. At the same time, the Endowment principal balance grew by approximately $50,000 so we are well positioned as we approach 2018 and beyond. Submitted by Nora Foster

Annual Meeting and Luncheon Volunteers Needed Saturday, January 20, and Sunday, January 21, 2018

We need volunteers to assist with food prep, serving, cooking, cleaning, and other duties for the St. Matthew's Day luncheon. Two-hour shifts are available on Saturday, January 17, between 10:00 am - 4:00 pm; Sunday, January 18, has two-hour shifts available between 10:00 am - 2:00 pm.

Saturday's food prep consists of chopping, mixing, and involves some dishwashing, too. We also need help with decorating, which usually happens at noon. Sunday's shifts involve cooking, serving, cleaning, and money collecting.

Offshoots Small Groups

Offshoots small groups are a chance for parishioners to share our passions with one another and our neighbor. This initia-tive grows out of the idea that wherever Christians are present, the body of Christ is revealed. So have some fun with these groups, get to know your fellow parishioners, and invite a friend to “come and see” a little glimpse of the Kingdom. Brookdale Senior Assisted Living Eucharist Service Sunday, December 24 | 2:00 pm | Brookdale Senior Assisted Living Center

ALL families are invited to attend the monthly church service at Brookdale Senior Living Center (behind Randall’s on Mesa). St. Matthew’s celebrates the 4th Sunday of each month - this month, December, we will be at Brookdale at 2:00 on Sunday, December 24. It is a great option if you are unable to make any of the other services that day. We will put out more information for families to join in this ministry in the new year. Having children around is a bright spot in the residents’ lives and having families there with children brings pure joy. Consider joining us on a 4th Sunday at 2:00 pm sometime in the spring!

PNO—Parents’ Night Out Spring Schedule

St. Matthew’s offers Parents’ Night Out, a fun night for kiddos so that parents can have an evening out—once a month, guar-anteed! We play with the children, create arts/crafts, watch a movie, etc. It is simple: make a reservation with Susan Good-man at [email protected] and bring a peanut-free dinner for your child(ren).
