Bloomfield Baptist Family...

I like comfort. I like to wear comfortable shoes and I like to sleep in a comfortable bed. When I am comfortable, I really don’t spend much time thinking about why I am comfortable, I just enjoy my comfort. But when I am uncomfortable, I spend a lot of time thinking about how I can get comfortable. For ex-ample, I like my bed and it is comfortable. But, when I sleep in a different bed on a trip, I spend a lot of time tossing and turn-ing and thinking about how I wish I was in my bed at home.

For me, evangelism is uncomfortable. When I am in a con-versation with someone and I am seeking to witness to them, I often feel uncomfortable. Sometimes I feel uncomfortable be-cause I fear I will say the wrong thing. Sometimes I feel un-comfortable that I have not prayed enough for the conversa-tion I am having. In those moments, I long for comfort.

In my conversations with other Christians, I have found that I am not alone. In fact, most Christians are so uncomfortable with evangelism that they just don’t do it. The problem with that is that Jesus Christ has called each of us to, “Go there-fore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matt 28:19-20)

Maybe it’s a good thing to be uncomfortable with evangel-ism. Perhaps, God has geared us that way so that we will rely on Him more and on ourselves less; so that we will see the severity of what is at stake; so that we will share the gospel with a lost and dying world, no matter what it cost us. Maybe we need to toss and turn in our beds at night because we are so burdened for our lost neighbor, relative, co-worker or friend.

Are you uncomfortable?
