JEREMY’SJEREMY MONTEIRO IS A LEGEND IN THE LOCAL JAZZ SCENE. HE SHARES WITH US THE LATEST

JEREMY MONTEIRO has had a busy month since his performance at the very first Russia-Singapore Jazz Symphonia on Nov 29.

In fact, he was in Italy at the point of this interview, before returning for the next performance.

Jeremy has played for the likes of Barack Obama, Bruce Willis and Jackie Chan, as well as performed for artistes such as Ronan Keating and Kevin Spacey.

He updates Weekender on his upcoming plans.

YOU’VE BEEN IN THE INDUSTRY FOR MANY YEARS. DO YOU THINK THE LOCAL RECEPTION OF JAZZ MUSIC HAS CHANGED? There is a much larger audience and a much deeper understanding of jazz in Singapore these days, much better than ten years ago.

YOU’VE PERFORMED FOR MANY DIGNITARIES AND CELEBRITIES. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE PERFORMANCE? I always love playing for

Singapore’s Ambassador-At-Large Prof Tommy Koh because he is always so genuinely appreciative and will always come to thank all the musicians personally after the show.

WHAT IS GOING ON FOR YOU NOW? The Russian-Singapore Jazz Symphonia is a big project for me and I am very excited about it. Then it’s on to my big annual Jazzy Christmas concert at the Esplanade on Dec 21. It’s the ninth one.

I am also working on an Anthology Book of my original compositions which will be released in the second quarter of 2014.

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING THIS CHRISTMAS? Besides my Jazzy Christmas show, I am concurrently recording my Chinese New Year Smooth Jazz album which is being released by UMusic and sponsored by AMC Live.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE TUNES? “Smile” by Charlie Chaplin, “Alfie” by Burt Bacharach, “A Song For You” by Leon Russell.

TELL US SOMETHING THAT PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU.That I was the founding vice-president of the Vegetarian Society of Singapore. But I am no longer vegetarian now because of doctor’s orders.

WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY AND WHY? I usually live my life in a state of bliss, with some times which are challenging but no one thing makes me happy. But that moment after I complete a composition that I like, or play a great solo on a show and when the band is poppin’... those moments are priceless to me.

CREATURES OF CARNAGEVENTURE INTO THE DESTRUCTIVE PSYCHES OF CREATURES IN ANIMAL PLANET’S “THE CONQUERORS”

NO, IT’S NOT an alien invasion but something that may appear close to it.

Animal Planet takes you through an astonishing four-part special about seemingly harmless creatures that have transformed themselves into terrible invaders of their habitats.

Unbeknownst to us, “The Conquerors” are taking over the world at an alarming rate. They eat, they kill and they lay waste to the land that they are alien to without a moment’s hesitation.

A scary thought, isn’t it?

AN UNRIVALLED STRANGLEHOLDThe king crab, the pine processionary caterpillar, the lionfish and the fire ant – as far as biologists are aware – are responsible for the fastest animal invasions in recent decades, making them the most successful invaders on Earth.

At the rate that these creatures are taking over eco systems, you can’t help but wonder how much of our planet we will have left in a few years’ time.

In their native habitats, these creatures form part of the ecological balance but once introduced by man into new territories, they wipe out other species, monopolise food supplies and can be fiercely territorial, ultimately posing a threat to the existing biodiversity.

In these new environments, they have developed strategies to conquer their new territories and have even modified their genes to adapt to unfamiliar settings. In simple words, they are evolving to destroy and to overcome.

THE SECRETS TO SUCCESSThe scientific community, in this four-part special, seeks to find out the reasons for the success of these

creatures. They seek answers in

order to better understand the threat that these aggressors represent to their environments; probing their capacity for genetic modification, behavioural change and reorganisation of social hierarchy which allows them to establish unrivalled dominion over new terrains.

“The Conquerors” follows this global investigation and, with the help of these experts, will reveal the formidable biological advantages of these exceptional species and the methods being explored to control their frightening progression.

A FIERY DOOM?One of them is the ravenous fire ants. One colony can contain up to 40 million individuals, and they are able to exterminate all other species, confiscate

food for their own use and aggressively defend their territory.

They are commonly called fire ants because of the burning venom that they inject with their stingers, located at the extremity of their abdomens. Is there no way to stop or hinder the warpath of these tiny terrors?

In order to understand the devastating success of these creatures and its impact upon the world and on us, follow these scientists on a study that documents their patterns and behaviour.

Will we find a way to control this swath of destruction?

“The Conquerors” premieres on Dec 13, 10pm, on Animal Planet, StarHub Ch 424.

MOVIE PREVIEW

In a world where myth meets legend and intricate swordfights dazzle the

mind, the timeless tale of 47 Ronin draws you into the dauntless spirit of the Samurai.

With a sense of purpose and justice in each swing of their blade, experience the raw emotion and fury of the Ronin in 3D.

The powerful cast, including Keanu Reeves (best remembered for the Matrix

A HOLLYWOOD TAKE ON THE FAMOUS TALE OF THE 47 LEADERLESS SAMURAI, STARRING KEANU REEVES, SLASHES ITS WAY TO THE BIG SCREEN

SAMURAIS & SWORDFIGHTStrilogy) and Hiroyuki Sanada (of The Last Samurai), are ready to take theatres by storm as they hack and slash with renewed fervour, bound to thrill and keep you at the edge of your seat.

Helmed by Director Carl Rinsch (The Gift), the film brings to life the stunning landscapes and enormous battle sequences that depict the saga in a way that honours the mysteries of the Samurai.

One can’t help but feel that

some scenes are a nod to the master of samurai films, Akira Kurosawa. The scenes and sequences evoke a sense of the epic and the dramatic.

A POWER-CRAZED WARLORDAfter the treacherous warlord, Lord Kira (Tadanobu Asano), kills Lord Asano (Min Tanaka) and banishes his vassals, the 47 master-less samurai (or Ronin) vow to seek revenge and to restore honour to their people.

Driven from their homes and dispersed across the land, this band of Ronin led by the lieutenant Oishi (Hiroyuki Sanada) must seek the help of Kai, an outcast played by Keanu Reeves, as they fight their way across a savage world of mythic beasts, a

shape-shifting sorceress and fearsome monsters.

With the powerful witch (portrayed by Rinko Kikuchi) at his command, Lord Kira uses her otherworldly powers to achieve his goals. He uses her shape-shifting abilities to smear and tarnish the name of Lord Asano and his samurais.

AN OUTCAST HEROThe protagonist, Kai, is a half-breed. Orphaned at birth, Kai is trained from a tender age by supernatural creatures called the Tengu, but he fled when he realised that he did not want to end up like them.

Taken in by the firm but fair Lord Asano, Kai begins his journey. When he is asked to help the band of Ronin avenge

their master’s death, conflicts arise between Oishi and Kai.

FANTASTIC SCENES AND RELATABLE THEMES 47 Ronin touts masterful displays of swordsmanship accompanied with amazing renderings of an ancient and lush world long past.

Pamela Abdy, Producer of 47 Ronin, said, “The story’s themes of honour, revenge and love are universal ideas, and we can see ourselves in these characters and their emotions, yearnings and injustices.”

These age-old and universal themes are expected to resonate in viewers. Don’t be surprised if you walk out of the cinema with a renewed sense of justice.

BASED ON THE true story of female psychotherapist Dr Donna Dannenfelser, who worked for the New York Jets, an American professional football team, “Necessary Roughness” chronicles the life of an independent and newly-single mom, and her brand of tough love psychotherapy.

THERAPY OF TOUGH LOVE When a tough, sexy Long Island divorcee (played by Callie Thorne) gets a job as the therapist for a professional American football team, Danielle “Dani” Santino realises that it’s not as easy as it looks.

As a single mom raising two teenagers, her start-up practice wreaks havoc in her life. But, recognising that she’s changing people’s lives for the better, she is determined to make her new career work by striking a balance between her personal and professional worlds.

CHANGE FOR THE BETTER? The first episode in Season Three picks up six months after Dani’s plans to marry Matt Donnally (Marc Blucas) collapses.

When the New York

Hawks’ head coach Pat Purnell is fired, Tom Wizinski (David Andrews) takes over, and his first order of business is to fire Dani and to get a new team psychologist.

Even after being fired from the team, Dani is convinced by the Hawks’ star player Terrence “TK” King (Mehcad Brooks) to continue seeing him, as his psychologist, even though she is no longer with the team.

After meeting with a new talent agency named V3 Global, Dani is asked to see baseball pitching prospect Darryl “Hutch” Hutchinson (Jonathan Keltz), whose fear of flying threatens to sink a

multi-million dollar contract in Kansas City.

But all is not what it seems as people in the background threaten to undermine Dani’s efforts after she starts to work for V3. Is change really always for the better?

Dr David Livingstone captured peoples’ attention, and imagination, when

he became the first European to witness the beauty and splendour of Victoria Falls.

His extraordinary accounts of slavery in Africa and his transcontinental journey transformed the 19th Century terrestrial explorer into the scourge of the African slave trade and one of the most iconic figures in history.

But what caused Livingstone to turn to amoral behaviours similar to those of the slave traders he championed against?

MYSTERIES & MOMENTOUS MOMENTSNational Geographic Channel’s “The Lost Diary of Dr Livingstone” takes viewers on an investigation to uncover the private words of Livingstone’s final field diaries. Livingstone’s eye-witness account of a massacre in an African village sent shockwaves around the globe almost 140 years ago, but his original narrative has been shrouded in mystery until now.

This one-hour special

DR. LIVINGSTONE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL’S NEW SPECIAL UNCOVERS THREE MAJOR EXPEDITIONS, ONE EXTRAORDINARY EXPLORER AND 140 YEARS OF MYSTERY

returns to one of the most important moments in African history – Livingstone’s third and final expedition that ultimately brought about the end of the African slave trade.

MISSIONARY OR MADMAN?The first of Livingstone’s expeditions brought about the publication of his Christian missionary journals, which exposed for the first time the grotesque forms of submission and torture that traders had inflicted upon African slaves.

Livingstone’s account horrified Europeans and Americans, and shed a glaring spotlight on the African slave trade. A prolific Victorian cartographer, he led his team on a second journey down the Zambezi River. A fatal oversight left men, women and children dead; one of them being his own wife.

In the hopes of restoring his reputation, and his spirits, Livingstone returned to Africa for a third time in search of an answer to one of the most sought out mysteries: What is the source of the Nile River?

REVELATIONS FROM MODERN TECHNOLOGYIn this programme, specialist

Adrian Wisnicki leads a team of digital scientists to reveal a startling new picture of an explorer haunted by his obsessions.

With the help of state-of-the-art, multi-spectral imaging first invented by NASA, Wisnicki and his team decipher the field diaries that were deemed illegible, written on old newspaper clippings with faded berry ink.

It is revealed that Livingstone’s deepest anxieties and thoughts are at their peak when he witnesses a bloody massacre in a village. Traumatised, he turns back and gives up his dream of discovering the source of the Nile.

Only after he succumbs to death is a treaty signed, ending the commercial slave market in East Africa – what Livingstone has strived for in his life, but never got to see.

Watch this riveting special and find out more mysteries and controversies unveiled.

The Lost Diary of Dr Livingstone premieres on Dec 14, 10pm, on National Geographic Channel, StarHub Ch 411 & SingTel mio Ch 201.

LOOKING FOR A kid-friendly place but yet want to enjoy more sophisticated fare than Spaghetti-Os and tater-tots?

Bringing the family-style and self-service concept from American burger chains, DIO Burger gives you the choice of adding as many or as little condiments and accoutrements as you wish to your burger.

What’s more, the décor is bright and cheery, with animated films such as Despicable Me or Jack Frost playing on the screen to help to keep both adults and children entertained.

IT’S ALL UP TO YOUFirst, pick your bun – either

a brioche or multi-grain bun – then your favourite burger patty. For beef lovers, you have the option

of wagyu or chuck before picking your preferred style.

We chose the My Way, with cheddar cheese, bacon and Portobello mushroom ($17.80-$21.80). The juicy patty arrived in a sweet brioche bun.

The sheer size made it almost impossible to bite down on it without it falling apart. We wish that we could choose the patty’s doneness as well, for a better texture.

If you can’t decide, go for the DIO Burger ($29.80). This massive burger comes with 100 per cent premium cut Wagyu beef, pork ribs, chicken thigh and cheddar cheese. Other options include fish,

chicken and pork.

FRUIT, VEGETABLE AND MOREThe burgers come condiment and vegetable–free, and ready for you to add whatever you want to the mix from the condiment counter in the middle of the restaurant.

Add anything from your standard lettuce and tomatoes to pineapples, mango salsa, onions, pickles and jalapenos.

The sauces are also plentiful with options such as spicy cheese sauce, cheese sauce, honey mustard, barbecue and mayonnaise.

With so many options, why not try something new in DIO Burger this weekend?

THERE’S BEEN A Mexican wave fanning through town lately. Joining the tide is newly-opened taqueira, Lower East Side.

Located next to Katong Shopping Centre, this airy and rustic place serves spicy Mexican fusion food, mezcals – an alcoholic drink made from the maguey plant – and craft beers.

Started by the same folks behind Spathe Public House, you can expect food with a twist.

MEXICAN ACCENTSChef Claudio Sandri, of Spathe and Lower East Side, says, “We work closely with our suppliers to bring in a host of indigenous spicy

chillies from Mexico like habaneros, poblanos, and jalapenos. We then make our own pickled chillies and sauces, and offer three levels of spiciness so that customers can go for the no-holds barred spice levels!”

We found the Level Two spiciness more than a mere kick to the teeth, so our advice is to stick to either the first or second levels unless you are a chilli fiend.

Their Tilapia Taco ($12 for one, $28 for three) comprises a broiled fillet with tomatoes, onions, cilantro and caper berries and is served on a deep fried flour tortilla which we loved.

Also try their Octopus & Squid Burrito ($18) stuffed

with lettuce, green apples, avocado, bacon and chipotle salsa.

THE CHILLI CRAB has long been heralded as our national dish. The crab is usually cooked in an eggy and sweet chilli sauce.

The sauce is often mopped up with a side of fried mantou (plain bun).

You can now get Italian street food favourites right in the heart of the Telok

Ayer enclave. Serving “Morsi & Sorsi”, which translates to “sips and bites”, ranging from sandwiches to stuzzichini – Italian small plates – you are sure of an authentic Italian street food experience.

ITALIAN INSPIRATIONThis new endeavour was inspired by the chef’s recent trip to Italy. He came across the concept at the airport and wanted to bring the idea to bustling Singapore.

“I wanted something totally different from Gattopardo, with a casual environment but still serving food with top

quality ingredients at an affordable price for an audience that is pressed for time,” says Chef Sauro.

Highlights include the Don Bocarte Anchovies ($6), served on a thin slice of toasted Frittata bread and the Fish in Carpione ($12), a sweet and sour fish fillet served in brine and onions.

For hot stuzzichini dishes, try their Panelle ($7), chick pea fritters with bread and lemon, and their Arancini ($6), Sicilian deep-fried rice balls.

SMALL TO LARGELarger platters are also available should you be hankering for something more substantial. The Beef

or Vegetarian Homemade Lasagne ($9-$12) comprises a rich combination of mozzarella and parmesan cheese with either beef or eggplant.

Also try their platters served with bread such as the Baby Mozzarrella, Parma Ham, Baby Spinach and

Cherry Tomato ($23) or the Sous Vide Beef Cheek with Mash Potato ($18) for a more filling meal.

There are also sandwiches and paninis available to go.

A NEW HOEGAARDEN Rosée brew has recently arrived in Singapore, in a lively launch at Ku Dé Ta club lounge at the Marina Bay Sands SkyPark.

This new rosée from the popular beer brand, Hoegaarden, is exclusively available at Ku Dé Ta for the next six months.

The new Hoegaarden Rosée was launched in end-November, with much fanfare. Guest DJ Andrew T entertained together with Ku Dé Ta’s resident DJs, Yafifth and Doze.

FRUITY AND ROSYThe star of the night, of course, was the new addition to the Hoegaarden beer family. The Hoegaarden Rosée is similar in body to the original Hoegaarden wheat beer that many are familiar with but it is infused with the fruity zest of raspberries.

It is a naturally-sweet brew with a fruity aroma, and with subtle hints of spice and coriander. Like the original wheat version, the

Rosée is unfiltered, giving it a cloudy appearance. Its colour has hues of delicate pink to light orange.

Lower in alcohol at 3 per cent, it is refreshing yet not too strong.

One could say that this is a coup by the popular Belgian brewers, Hoegaarden Brewery.

METHOD1. Heat up a non-stick pan with olive oil until it is hot. Lightly fry the tau kwa (fried bean curd) to a light, crispy texture and set aside. 2. Using the same non-stick pan, fry the red shallots, curry leaves and garlic until fragrant. 3. Add the dried shrimp, sliced red chilli and kecap manis (sweet soy sauce).4. Add long beans, fried shallots and tau kwa. Season to taste.

5. Serve hot with rice and garnish with more fried shallots.

This recipe is from Unicurd, which has launched a black soybean product made of non-genetically modified Brazilian black soybeans that contains a higher amount of antioxidants.

Unicurd Black Soybean Tofu and Black Soybean Tau Kwa can be found at NTUC FairPrice, Cold Storage and Sheng Siong supermarkets.

New German-stylebeer beverageby local brandFOR THE FIRST TIME, THERE IS A GERMAN-STYLE RADLER WITH A LOCAL BREW

A NEW GERMAN-STYLE beer beverage with a local brew has been launched in Singapore and Asia.

Tiger’s new Radler combines Tiger beer and natural lemon juice, offering double the refreshment for beer or alcoholic beverage lovers.

The Tiger Radler is a thirst-quencher with a brand new taste that is fruity and sharp while, at the same time, being rooted in a rich, flavourful brew. The Radler is suitable for all occasions and types of food.

GERMAN ORIGIN The “radler”, which means “cyclist” in German, is said to have been invented by Franz Xaver Kugler in June 1922 when some 13,000 cyclists unexpectedly visited his pub.

To prevent his bar from running dry, he added lemon juice to the beer and the radler was born.

WHERE TO FIND TIGER RADLER This December, beer and alcoholic beverage fans will have the opportunity to sample this new beer variant through a “Double Refreshment Wheel” at a Tiger pop-up bar.

The Double Refreshment Wheel provides fans with limited edition premiums, ranging from tote bags to notebooks, together with a refreshing Tiger Radler. The pop-up bar will next be at One Raffles Place from Dec 11 to 13, 11am to 7pm.

Tiger Radler is available in both cans and bottles at leading retailers, from supermarkets to convenience stores, restaurants, pubs and clubs.

SAUERKRAUT Usually made from fermented cabbage, sauerkraut, a German speciality, is rich in healthy live cultures and may help in reducing allergy symptoms.

MISO SOUPMiso, one of the mainstays of Japanese cooking, is commonly used in macrobiotic cooking as a digestive aid. Made from fermented rye, beans, barley or rice, the soup is full of lactobacilli and bifidus bacteria. It is also nutrient dense.

KIMCHIThis Korean fermented vegetable has beneficial bacteria. It is also a

great source of beta-carotene, calcium, iron and other vitamins. This is more reason to visit Korean eateries.

DARK CHOCOLATESome dark chocolates contain probiotics. Do check labels carefully before buying any dark chocolate you come across. Dark chocolate is also said to regulate blood sugar and to be full of antioxidants.

MICRO-ALGAEPowdered forms of these micro-algae such as spirulina, chorella or blue-green algae can be found at

many health food stores. A spoonful in your juice or milk helps to increase good bacteria.

DECEMBER 13 - 19, 2013HEALTH & BEAUTY WEEKENDER.COM.SGW PAGE 10

There are more than 500 different types of bacteria in your digestive tract. Before you start to get disgusted, fear not, not all of

these bacteria are bad for your body. Some of these bacteria actually help

you to maintain your health. These beneficial bacteria are called probiotics.

WHAT EXACTLY ARE PROBIOTICS?Probiotics are considered “friendly bacteria” that help to keep intestines healthy and to assist in the digestion of food. Probiotics are also needed to synthesise Vitamin K, folic acid, as well as Vitamin B12.

Probiotics provide health benefits to you as they suppress the growth of harmful bacteria by lowering your intestinal pH, in order to keep the population of harmful bacteria in check.

Probiotics also support the immune system. A healthy person generally maintains a right balance of the gut “flora”.

Probiotics can be found in cultured products such as yoghurt, miso soup, dark chocolate and even tempeh – a type of food made from fermented soy bean.

HOW PROBIOTICS WORKAntibiotics destroy both the pathogenic and friendly bacteria, and disturb the balance of friendly bacteria in the gastro-intestinal tract.

Probiotic supplementation will be useful, following antibiotics by at least two hours. This can help to strengthen your constitution.

The most common strains of supplemental probiotics are Lactobacillus (e.g. Acidophilus) and Bifidobacterium. Products containing more strains of probiotics may be more attractive because different strains of probiotics provide different health benefits.

Please note that different strains may work together in synergy. Certain strains may not be able to colonise in some people while other strains may be able to do so.

Probiotics are efficacious only if they survive the stomach acid and bile degradation as they pass through

your gastro-intestinal tract. Probiotic supplements usually contain several billions of microorganisms in order to ensure that adequate gut colonisation takes place.

So, you don’t have to worry. Probiotic supplements will definitely be effective enough to do the job that they have been designed to.

WHERE TO GET PROBIOTICSHolland & Barrett probiotic supplements are obtained from a frozen bacterial culture which is of a vegan source.

Holland & Barrett Probiotic Acidophilus Chewable comes in strawberry flavour and is formulated for children over three years of age.

For adults, try the Holland & Barrett Mega Potency Acidophilus which provides four different bacterial strains and 3 billion active cultures per capsule.

The store also carries a third-party brand of probiotic product called Forever Young – Probio 7 Advanced Formula. Each capsule of Probio 7 provides you with 10 billion bacteria, eight different bacterial strains and two types of prebiotic fibres.

PREBIOTICS VS. PROBIOTICSPrebiotics are non-digestible carbohydrates that can be used as a food source for probiotics. Prebiotics can be found in foods such as bananas, as well as in whole grains.

Probiotics are generally safe products. However, there are side effects including bloating and flatulence.

Check with your doctor if you are considering adding supplements to your diet, in order to ensure that you find the correct supplement for you, and to ensure that you will always be in the pink of health.

Visit Holland & Barrett stores island-wide to find out more.

Holland & Barrett supplements are available at all Holland & Barrett stores, subject to item availability. Visit www.hollandandbarrett.com.sg for more details on promotions and store locations.

MORE ON PROBIOTIC FOODSHere are some foods that you can incorporate into your diet to increase the amount of probiotics in your body.

LIVE-CULTURED YOGHURTAlways pick yoghurt with live cultures.

Most types of yoghurt in the market have fructose and sugar, making them high-caloric food instead of being healthy.

Supplements can also help to give you a regular intake of probiotics to keep you healthy.

PRESERVE YOUR

COLLAGEN IS THE WORD IN ANTI-AGING THESE DAYS. BUT WHAT DOES IT REALLY DO?

The mad rush to stop aging in its tracks has resulted in a slew of collagen products with claims to prevent the

signs of aging. Most people understand that

collagen somehow plays a role in the anti-aging process but how exactly does it do it?

WHAT IS COLLAGEN?Collagen is a protein made up of amino acids, which are in turn built of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen. Collagen contains specific amino acids – glycine, proline, hydroxyproline and arginine.

It makes up approximately 30 per cent of the proteins within the body. These are tough and strong structures found all over the body such as the bones, tendons and ligaments.

Collagen can be found exclusively in animals, especially in the flesh and in the connective tissues of mammals. It is part of the connective tissue in the skin that helps with firmness, suppleness and constant renewal of skin cells. It is vital for skin elasticity.

Ligaments are also a type of connective tissue that attach two bones and hold the joints together. All of these tissues, bones, ligaments and tendons as well as the skeletal muscles are made up of protein. One of the predominant proteins is the collagen.

STRUCTURE OF COLLAGENCollagen microscopically occurs in elongated fibrils. It is mostly found in fibrous tissues such as tendon, ligaments and skin and is also abundant in cornea, bone, blood vessels, cartilage, intervertebral discs and the digestive tract.

In muscle tissue, collagen serves as a major component of endomysium. About 1 to 2 per cent of the muscles are formed of collagen and around 6 per cent of the total weight of muscles is formed of collagen.

Gelatin used in food is collagen that has been irreversibly hydrolysed.

In the 1930s, collagen was first discovered to have a molecular structure. Collagen is further packed into fibrillar collagen types with hexagonal or quasi-hexagonal shapes. The packing may be sheet-like or micro-fribillar.

WHAT DOES COLLAGEN DO?Collagen helps to give strength to various structures of the body and also protects structures such as the skin by preventing absorption and spreading of pathogenic substances, environmental toxins, micro-organisms and cancerous cells.

It is also present in all the smooth muscle tissues, blood vessels, digestive tract, heart, gall bladder and kidneys, holding the cells and

tissues together.With age, collagen production

slows and the cell structures weaken. The skin gets thinner and is more easily damaged, hair gets lifeless, the skin sags and wrinkles, and tendons and ligaments become less elastic while joints stiffen up.

Generally, people look to various sources to replenish collagen in their bodies. These include collagen drinks, collagen injections or eating certain health supplements.

Why not turn to one reliable and easy source to get the collagen you need? MyLustre can help you to replenish collagen with Lustre High Grade Collagen ($33.90). It is made of 100 per cent pure marine hydrolysed collagen.

It helps to promote healthier skin and connective tissues as well as improves texture and to gain a more flexible bone structure.

The Lustre Age Defy Product ($55) also contains collagen, yet has other benefits such as smoothening skin and reducing fine lines, as well as heals and lightens scars.

It also improves blood circulation and cardiovascular health, and gives you radiant, rosy cheeks.

YOUTH

WITH THE YEAR-END festive season approaching, mass gatherings such as parties, concerts, festive shopping sprees and group travelling increase the possibility of disease transmission among Singaporeans.

To better educate the public on preventive measures to protect themselves and their loved ones from falling ill, Dettol recently commissioned a survey to understand the hygiene habits of Singaporeans.

SUSCEPTIBLE TO SEASONAL ILLNESSESAccording to Dettol’s latest survey of 500 respondents, aged between 20 and 65 years old, it was found that Singaporeans who fall ill during the year-end festive season commonly fall prey to the seasonal flu, respiratory illness or illnesses related to contamination, particularly where they frequent mass gathering occasions.

Of those that fall ill, 70 per cent are most likely to catch the seasonal flu and 68 per cent of them have expressed a high tendency to develop respiratory illnesses like the common cold, cough and sore throat. In addition, 42 per cent reportedly suffer from cross-contamination related illnesses.

The survey also highlighted that 50 per cent of the respondents do not realise that these infectious diseases are easily contracted through poor personal hygiene.

The majority attribute the sources of these infectious diseases to be from people who are infected,

inconsiderate and unhygienic, and through communal facilities, germ hotspots and high-touch points, for instance, door handles and table surfaces.

PREVENTIVE MEASURESSaid Abhishek Chuckarbutty,

Marketing Director of Reckitt Benckiser (that supports the Global Hygiene Council by an unrestricted educational grant) Malaysia and Singapore, “To reduce the chances of contracting these infectious diseases, it is vital that Singaporeans value and practice basic personal hygiene, such as washing hands with soap and water, or at least apply the hand sanitizer, after using the toilet.”

According to the Global Hygiene Council (GHC), good hygiene practices play a significant role in preventing the spread of infectious diseases. To minimise the chances of contracting or spreading infectious diseases, the council advises members of the public to practice good personal hygiene.

For example, hand-washing with soap and water or the use of a hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available.

From the survey, only 50 per cent were found to wash their hands thoroughly with water and soap before eating and after using the restroom. The lack of personal hygiene gives rise to major health problems such as the spread of infectious diseases.

To improve hygiene levels, 64 per cent of the respondents are supportive of the idea to provide sanitizers in public areas.

ABOUT THE GLOBAL HYGIENE COUNCILThe Global Hygiene Council is an initiative bringing together leading global experts in the field of microbiology, virology, infectious diseases, immunology, and public health to formulate realistic and practical recommendations on simple hygiene measures to help the public improve levels of hygiene in the home and community and, in turn, help to prevent the spread of all kinds of infections.

YOUR GREAT PHOTOSDESERVE A FAMILY WALLCREATE A WALL WITH PHOTOS OF YOUR FAMILY’S TRAVELS, GRADUATIONS, BIRTHDAYS, ANNIVERSARIES AND MORE, FOR ALL TO SEE! GUINEVERE SOFER TELLS YOU HOW

“THEIR QUALITY AND HIGHER RESOLUTION TYPICALLY MAKE THE PICTURES SHARPER AND RICHER IN DETAIL.”

Here is a great way to transform a dull wall at home into a centre of

attention simply by using photos as well as a few nice frames.

With these few handy tips, you’re all set to take your great photos to the next level – your family wall.

TIP 1: SHOOT PHOTOS WITH QUALITY CAMERASSince you want the family wall to be beautiful, you should start with good quality pictures. I would recommend pictures taken with at least a Compact Digital Camera.

Their quality and higher resolution typically make the pictures sharper and richer in detail.

TIP 2: CHOOSE A WALLIt can be the wall in the hallway, behind the dining table, in the kitchen, or at the entrance. Anywhere is fine as long as it is in a common family area.

However, do choose an area that isn’t too cluttered for the framed photos to stand out.

And, don’t worry, it doesn’t matter what the wall is made of (i.e. concrete, gypsum, etc.) as there are many inexpensive hooks and hanger solutions in hardware stores.

Just ask the hardware store assistant for advice.

TIP 3: PLAN THE WALL SPACENo matter how you plan it, just make sure you follow a simple grid. The most important areas are in the centre of the space. Do note that the eye-level photos get the most views.

So, use a few large photos to “anchor” the overall space, and then cluster the smaller ones around it.

TIP 4: USE QUALITY PRINTING To fill up the wall space, you will need to have a few large-sized photos, preferably A3 size or bigger.

Phone cam photos are terrible when printed. Their poor image quality is more evident when printed in high resolution.

Avoid using these photos for your family wall.

Once you have identified

which pictures you want in which frames, have them printed. You can do it yourself with good printers such as the Canon Pixma printers, or send them to the photo hubs to print.

TIP 5: THE PICTURES MATTER, NOT THE FRAME.Don’t spend a lot of money on frames. Look for bargains from dollar stores or IKEA and pick up simple, no-frills frames.

You can get them in various sizes for the different-sized photos but the materials they’re made of should (whether wood, plastic, glass or metal, etc.) be the same, or at least appear similar in consistency so that it doesn’t detract from the photos.

TIP 6: LEAVE ROOM FOR FUTURE PHOTOSDon’t fill up every single space on the wall. Leave room for future photos from future milestones.

And, don’t forget to bring your Compact Digital Camera!

The photos and their quality matter much more than their frames

LAST YEAR, siblings Jaime and Philip Lim (a well-known food blogger) took part in the Bosch Dream Kitchen Cook-off, which saw amateur cooking teams battle each other to win a Bosch Dream Kitchen makeover.

The prize was worth $30,000 and included Bosch home appliances (such as a built-in oven, chimney hood, gas hob and dishwasher), kitchen cabinets, fittings and accessories from Blum, and quartz counter tops from Belenco.

The Masterchef-like competition ended on Dec 14 last year, with Jaime and Philip being crowned the winners.

$30,000 GIFT TO AUNTJaime and Philip presented their $30,000-prize to their aunt, Annie, whom they felt would benefit from the kitchen makeover as she loves cooking and her kitchen was turning old.

After a three-month renovation, Annie’s kitchen has recently been completed with a brand new look. She is thrilled with her new kitchen, which features plenty of storage space and the latest equipment from Bosch – including a dishwasher.

THE LATEST EQUIPMENTThough Annie’s old kitchen was functional, it was turning old after seven years of frequent use. The new kitchen’s design replicates what she originally had but with the latest kitchen equipment and kitchen top added in.

She likes her new Belenco Quartz Surface

and Blum drawers which have been redesigned for even greater storage, which are timely after seven years of collecting more kitchen gadgets. She also loves her Bosch dishwasher and finds it very helpful in cleaning up dirty dishes.

THE GREATEST REWARD Philip and Jamie’s kitchen was only two years old (it was redesigned when Philip got married) when they won. They also mostly had Bosch equipment and Blum fittings, which were very similar to the equipment that they had won.

As they have dinner at their aunt’s place on most Sundays, giving the prize to her was the best way for them to thank her. Their aunt now has a brand new kitchen, just in time for Christmas.

Most of the Bosch kitchen equipment can be viewed at the Bosch Experience Centre at 11 Bishan Street 21, #04-01, Singapore 573943.

There are also smaller seeds in the flowers, consisting of 36,000 LEDs. The large sculpture took US artist Robert Buchholz and his team about ten days to install.

The lighting effects are specially-

programmed such that the seeds create different colours. Every 15 minutes, “WISH” changes colour to the rhythm of Mariah Carey’s cover song “All I Want for Christmas is You”, illuminating the Square and enhancing the festive ambience.

There is a belief that if you make a wish before blowing on a dandelion and letting its seeds dance in the wind, your wish will come true. “WISH” intends to have the wishes of its spectators carried in the wind.

Buchholz has said that the three dandelions are representations of his parents and him.

BRITISH AIRWAYS’ CABIN CREW TOOK TO A DIFFERENT KIND OF RUNWAY AS THE AIRLINE HOSTED A FASHION SHOW TO CELEBRATE 80 YEARS OF FLIGHTS

TO COMMEMORATE British Airways’ 80th anniversary of regular flights to Singapore, a different kind of fashion show was held at Eden Hall, home of the British High Commissioner.

The show featured uniforms from the 1940s to today, by renowned designers including Hardy Amies – the former dress designer for Queen Elizabeth II.

The outfits were modelled by British Airways Singapore-based cabin crew and models.

“Singapore holds a very special place in our company’s history, so this is a very exciting milestone for us,” said Robert Williams, British Airways Regional General Manager, South-East Asia, who hosted the event.

THE FIRST FLIGHTOn Dec 9, 1933, the airline’s first regular service to Singapore departed London – a journey that originally took ten days.

The inaugural flight to Singapore on what was then Imperial Airways departed from Croydon, London, and travelled via Paris, Brindisi, Alexandria, Cairo and Karachi.

A one-way fare to Singapore cost £180, which was just below the average yearly salary at the time.

Singapore has historically been an integral part of British Airways’ network, linking the UK with both Australia and the rest of Southeast Asia.

PRESENT STRENGTHSToday, British Airways offers a twice-daily service to London and a daily service to Sydney.

On Oct 15, British Airways was awarded “Best Airline”, “Best Airport Lounge”, “Best Frequent Flyer Programme” and “Best First Class” by readers of Business Traveller magazine.

LONELY PLANET HAS chosen the Kimberley in Western Australia’s northwest as one of the world’s Top 10 Regions in its “Best in Travel 2014”. The Kimberley ranked second.

“It’s one of the most sparsely-populated regions on the planet and one of the most starkly beautiful, carved by giant gorges, dimpled with deep, cool pools, and home to a coastline that could make Australian east-coasters weep,” Lonely Planet says.

CELEBRITY APPROVALIt’s not just Lonely Planet that thinks the Kimberley is extraordinary. The region has attracted a many high-profile guests including Sir Bob Geldof, Ewan McGregor, Jerry Hall, Miranda Kerr, Nicole Kidman and many more.

When talk show host Ellen DeGeneres asked Nicole Kidman where her favourite Australian destination was earlier this year, her answer was simple – Kununurra in the Kimberley.

Kidman fell in love with the Kimberley during the filming of Baz Luhrmann’s Australia in 2007 and has been an

advocate of the region ever since.

A DREAMSCAPEDirector Luhrmann spent almost a decade searching for the ultimate Australian landscape that would etch itself indelibly into the public imagination. He chose the Kimberley.

“What’s so exciting about the landscape which is on the one hand, harsh, brutal and unforgiving – but at any given moment can become the most awesome, majestic, inspiring, poetic and lyrical place to be,” said Luhrmann.

In May this year, Sir Bob Geldof was on business in Perth when he decided he had to tick off one of his “bucket list” experiences – witnessing the awe-inspiring Bungle Bungle Range at World Heritage listed Purnululu National Park.

“I flew up to Kununurra for the Ord Valley Muster and was fortunate enough to visit the Bungle Bungles whilst I was there,” said Sir Bob.

“I had heard so much about them and had seen pictures but had to go see them for myself. It was definitely worth the effort as both were simply spectacular in asymmetrical ways,” he said.

THE CHOICE SETTINGIn the past 12 months, several

high-profile advertising campaigns were shot in the Kimberley – Myer at El Questro, David Jones at Eco Beach and Megan Gale’s Isola swimwear range on Broome’s Cable Beach, to name a few.

The Kimberley is also featured in Tourism Western Australia’s two new “Experience Extraordinary” films. The Kimberley locations include El Questro Wilderness Park, Home Valley Station, the Bungle Bungle Range, Cable Beach and Gantheaume Point.

Lonely Planet’s endorsement of the Kimberley as No. 2 in the Top 10 Regions of Best in Travel 2014 is expected to draw a new wave of visitors to this extraordinary, unique wilderness.
