Come on down for an exciting picnic with a difference, at an open field in Serangoon on a Saturday afternoon, peppered with a diversity of fun interactive arts and cultural activities.

Organised by the Serangoon Division Community Arts and Culture Committee (CACC), this first-ever outdoor Arts Village, PICNIC, is part of 2013’s Passion Arts Month. This is one of different Passion Arts villages created by residents in different areas throughout Singapore with the aid of the various CACCs.

Be entertained by Roger Jenkins and Rosemarie Somaiah at the outdoor storytelling corner. Rosemarie is a partner at the Asian Storytelling Network, Singapore's very first professional storytelling group. Or, view the video car installation that uses the windscreen as a ‘video screen’. Browse through the pop-up bookstore by home-grown bookstore BooksActually, or check out interesting stories from youths of their grandparents’ life experiences at the Silver Yarn Project photo exhibition.

Discover more about the lives

and stories of our grandparents’ generation, as well as about the history of Serangoon. As a teaser, the PICNIC tower posters in the Serangoon neighbourhood feature a building with a red zinc roof, designed by artist Su-Jin Ng, who will also have an art installation at PICNIC.

Ang Sar Li, or Red Zinc, was the Chinese dialect name for Serangoon Gardens. Come and discover how this name became synonymous with Serangoon Gardens.

Another visual installation, Luck, Knowledge, Money

(L.K.M) is inspired by Serangoon’s fame for tuition centres and features an interactive chalkboard quiz on Serangoon’s subcultures and heritage, with lucky draw prizes to be won. There is fun and games for the entire family!

You can also relax and chill out to the music of local

indie bands such as Pleasantry, Cashew Chemists and Sapporo Safaris as you tuck in to Coney dogs and homemade burgers from The Travelling Cow, a mobile food truck offering affordable Western bistro fare. These are sure to put a smile on the faces of your kids.

Take this opportunity to have an afternoon-to-evening getaway picnic with your family and friends as you join in lively activities. This promises to be hours of fun and enjoyment, and to be highly interesting as well.

Visitors are strongly encouraged not to drive due to limited parking space. The venue is well-served by two bus stops. If you drive, please park at the multi-storey car park next to the Serangoon Community Club and take the free shuttle bus to the event. how did you prepare For your role as a jilted Fiancé in judgment day?I always get the question, "When are you going to act in a serious role?" and that does frustrate me a bit! Hahaha. I've been doing that, especially on stage, ever since I started acting. So, yes, this role is more of a dramatic one. The story really makes you think about mortality, the importance of memories and the idea of karma. It made me think of how one should set aside technology and materialism, and concentrate on human relationships (though I do love my dogs too).

ExEcutivE producEd by Mark Lee, Judgment Day’s cast includes popular names such as Henry Thia, Chua En Lai, Rebecca Lim, Guo Liang, Edwin Goh, Sebastian Tan, Wang Yuqing and the late John Cheng, better known as Ah Nan.

The film also features two popular Taiwanese actors: Tender Huang of Taiwanese drama Time Story and Alice Ko of the movie, Monga.

Judgment Day revolves around characters from all walks of life. They decide to share their deepest, darkest secrets based on the belief that doomsday will occur in the next 72 hours. A married man confesses his want for a sex-change, a wife reveals she is in love with her boss, and a young lady runs away to Cambodia and breaks up with her fiancé. When the day of reckoning doesn’t arrive, for those who made irreversible choices, it is the end of the world as they know it.

do you preFer playing dramatic roles or comedic ones?I think in Singapore, actors are in such a wonderful situation where they can dip their toes in both styles of performance. And I treasure the opportunities I get to stretch myself in different directions with every project. Variety is the spice of life!

what is your most memorable moment on the job?I think I'm very lucky to have a rather unusual job that requires me to do some pretty crazy things. I get paid to go on roller coasters and hot-air balloons, eat some great food, travel to far away destinations and interview some very famous people, like The Rock and Paula Abdul. But one of the most memorable moments that happened recently was also a rather scary one!

what happened?We were filming Judgment Day in the outskirts of Phnom Penh. I was riding pillion on a motorcycle along with a third passenger and a basket of chickens. The rider accelerated too quickly and the front wheel of the bike lost contact with the ground and did a backwards flip. I swear I saw my life flash past me! The guy behind me departed the bike unceremoniously and ended up on his back, along with the chickens. The rider held on for his dear life and ended up under the bike. I, for some strange reason, ninja-ed off the back and ended up in a taekwondo-do stance. We were all very lucky that no one was injured. Even the chickens. The bike could've landed on anyone of us and if there were more cars/bikes/lorries on the road, we would've been prata. We were all very lucky!

what do you do on a typical weekend?I enjoy going out and having a few drinks if I don't have to work the next day. I'm quite the night owl. I naturally exist in a time zone that is different to the one I'm living in! I stay up late, which means I sleep in quite a bit too. If there ever is a Sunday free, I try my best to make it to a champagne brunch. There's nothing quite like indulging in oysters, a cheese platter and copious amounts of champers. And then it's Monday again! Argh!

what would you like to say to all singaporeans?You continue to inspire me. We live in such a melting pot of cultures. Let's be proud of that! By the way, your driving skills are not very good. Hehehe. W

thE SingaporEan fashion scene is getting much more recognition than it did just a mere two or three years ago with labels such as Ashley Isham and Depression making waves abroad, creating a platform for young budding designers to test the waters. Womenswear brand YouYou, is one of them.

Created by Jacqueline Teo and Yuan Zhiying late last year, the brand officially launched early this year. “We named it YouYou as it represents the both of us. The Chinese character is ‘shuang’ which means pair. We tried many permutations and translations but all of them were just horrible. So, we decided to play on the character itself which comprises two ‘you’s,” says Zhiying. The girls met when they began working for Singaporean designer Max Tan.

YouYou’s womenswear shows off a “quiet sophistication” that suits their purported clientele of PMEBs and working women. Their Spring capsule collection entitled Clean Slate, shows off structural details such as exposed darts and sharp colours like vermillion orange, black, navy and silver grey.

“On the rack, it looks very clean and easy whereas in our catalogue, the clothes look very edgy. This is to show the versatility of the pieces,” says Jacqueline, who handles most of the production. Their range comprises updated contemporary style such as an orange flap-back dress – a simple A-line dress with

a slash back and a black knot dress with an asymmetrical

hemline. Their clothes are

affordably priced at $59 to $159 as

compared to other local brands. “There is an impression that

local brands are expensive, thus we want YouYou to be accessible to everyone, so we try to keep the prices reasonable,” explains Jacqueline.

The duo does a capsule collection per season as opposed to a full-fledged collection. Their Summer collection, E(merge) plays on concealed and furnishing details such as vanishing collars in bright shades of green, yellow atop of the basic blacks and navies. It will hit stores early to mid-May.

About the FilmI Give It A Year is written and directed by Dan Mazer, infamous for the films Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan and Bruno. It is produced by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner (Love Actually and Atonement), and Kris Thykier (Stardust).

The film stars Rose Byrne (of Bridesmaids), Rafe Spall, Anna Faris, Simon Baker, Minnie Driver and Jason Flemyng.

the Director’s cueFilmmaker Dan Mazer had a very specific idea for his debut as a feature film director. He had already been enjoying an iconoclastic career, working with Sacha Baron Cohen as a writer and producer on Da Ali G Show, Ali G Indahouse, Borat and Bruno.

With a career in comedy, Mazer decided he would work his humour around romance, though he had no interest in writing and directing a traditional romantic comedy.

NoN-trADitioNAl rom-com “I thought that it would be funny to write a comedy where instead of a couple getting together, with all the stereotypical things we have come to understand about that particular genre and trope, you subvert that and do a similar thing about a couple that you want to split up,” says Mazer.

He adds, “If you are sitting with your mates at a pub, their stories about splitting up with their girlfriends, their stories about breaking up, stories about arguments and about things going wrong, they are much funnier than, ‘She was amazing, we met, wasn’t it adorable.’”

Still, he was determined that it would remain a “feel-good comedy”.

comeDy iN relAtioNshipsProducer Kris Thykier says that I Give It A Year picks up where most romantic comedies end.

people of the Americas, you should not be surprised. The menu at J’s was originally inspired by owner and Managing Director Joy Mabhubani’s life and experiences in the far off continent.

Joy has lived in Hong Kong, Jakarta and Central America. It was her experiences in Central America that inspired her cuisine. She has since been in Singapore for about ten years.

The story behind J’s is also unusual and interesting. Joy says it all started with wanting to purchase a drum set. She had

gone down to El Toro, that was closing, at Winsland House. When she saw the restaurant, she decided that it was an opportunity not to be missed and purchased it. Joy is actually a banker by training.

“I have always had the idea of feeding people,” Joy explains.“I am grateful for wonderful people working with me, who make this

possible,” she adds.The food at J’s caters to a broad variety of patrons with different

dietary preferences, as it contains no pork, lard, alcohol or crustacean. Joy says that this was inspired by her experiences, including with friends who found it difficult to eat together due to their dietary requirements and the menus of the restaurants.

“I just felt that if we keep it simple, everyone can share a meal together,” she explains.

quAyside isle mAy be a bit of a hassle to get to for those who do not drive but why not head there to escape the throng of crowds over the weekend? You can even take a nice stroll down the jetty once you’re done stuffing yourself at the restaurants there.

So far, restaurants such as Picotin, Brussel Sprouts and Ezoca have joined in the fray alongside the boats. Museo, located a floor above Picotin, is a cosy place to chill out over the weekend. Museo – pronounced mu-zay-oh – is Italian for museum, and they try to showcase each course as an art piece.

The fusion menu serves dishes such as the Mezzanine Signature ($38 or $39) with a set of four small bites pre-selected or customised according to your taste. We tried the customised set comprising, the Joys of Life – roasted pork belly with hot sauce, Smile of Mona Lisa – deep-fried camembert, Flaming June – salmon curry, and the Three Musicians – soft shell crabs with tomato-chilli sauce.

The deep-fried camembert came with a shot glass of cranberry sauce which complemented each other perfectly. This is great as a bar snack should you just be hankering for a bite. The pork belly was smoky and crispy. It was certainly a decadent selection to share as well.

The entrees boasted dishes such as Sliced Beef with Mushroom “Zurich-style” with pan-roasted rosti potato ($28). We were slightly disappointed by this one as the sauce was too thick, resulting in us feeling a bit sick, and the potato was a tad too dry. Perhaps it had been sitting around for a bit.

($35), a marinated lamb rack served with sautéed arugula and cherry tomato chutney, fared much better. The shepherd’s pie side was also a unique twist to French fries or baked potato.

Museo also carries sister restaurant Arteastiq’s range of teas, sold in a pot, as well as a full bar filled with signature cocktails. We especially liked the Autumn Sweater ($20) – Nikka whiskey, maple and apricot syrup and fresh lemon juice. The drink even comes with a spherical ice cube within. Try their Cucumber Mojito ($16) for a cooling and refreshing drink as well.

Finish your meal with one of their desserts such as the Green Tea Crème Brulee ($12) or the Vodka Chocolate Lava Cake ($12), both of which come with a side of gelato of your choice. The Vodka Chocolate Lava Cake carries only a hint of vodka but the warm chocolate that oozes out upon

prodding was heaven when paired with the Champagne Vanilla gelato.

When you Are living far from home, a familiar sight, even a fast food outlet, is always welcome. Jollibee is to the Filipinos what McDonald’s is to the Americans living abroad.

Serving up their own brand of fried chicken, burgers and spaghetti, Jollibee has seen snaking queues since its opening on Mar 12.

Jollibee Foods Corporation Chairman and Founder Tony Tan Caktiong says, “We are delighted to bring Jollibee and its world-class delicious food offerings to Singapore as we believe that our food will appeal to the good taste of Singaporeans.”

The menu may be slightly smaller than the offerings in their 35-year-old chain in the Philippines but it is enough for more than a taste.

Signature dishes such as the Jollibee Chickenjoy, Yumburger, Spaghetti, Jolly Hotdog and Burger Steak are all available.

The Chickenjoy ($2.80 to $6.60) features two golden-fried crispy pieces of chicken with white rice and brown sauce. Visit the Jollibeesee what the Buzz is aBout as this filiPino fast fooD chain oPens its first outlet

lively flavours. One example is the Poppers ($15), breaded jalapeno peppers stuffed with mozzarella. These are invigorating and add some spice into your life. Those who have tried these before may feel that they could somehow be better though.

Nonetheless, one of my favourite dishes at J’s was the Scrambled Eggs with Salmon on Toast. From my personal experience, “fusion” is usually a bad word. This would be a strong exception. Flavourful and rich in taste, this is not what you would expect with scrambled eggs on toast. In fact, its name, while accurate, doesn’t quite seem to do justice to its taste.

The Chipotle Meatballs ($16) are also one of the best items on the menu at J’s. These are essentially braised beef meatballs in spicy chipotle and tomato sauce, served with crispy corn tortillas. While these delicious meatballs were prepared in a more Latin American style, they were very similar to the fragrant and wholesome taste of Italian meatballs. If the taste of life’s richness, pleasures and passion could be encapsulated within a meatball, this would probably be it.

The Quesadillas ($22), tortillas filled with chicken breast or minced beef, and cheese, onions, tomatoes, bell peppers, jalapeno and guacamole, were good and filling.

lAst thursdAy, Catalunya Singapore hosted an afternoon with Chef Ferran Adria of elBulli, the world-famous three Michelin star restaurant near Barcelona, Spain. In an intimate conference with an exclusive group of gastronomy media, Adria unveiled his upcoming plans and that of his new project, The elBulli Foundation.

According to Catalunya, this was the first press unveiling in Asia.

“Before, elBulli was a restaurant. Now, it is something completely different,” says Adria.

The elBullI FoundaTIonA two-pronged project, the elBulli Foundation will first launch later this year with an expansion of elBulli’s original restaurant premises in Roses, Barcelona. Around 2015, the elBulli Foundation will reveal Bullipedia, an extensive online internet resource for all to use.

The elBulli Foundation was an inspiration of Adria himself, shortly after announcing the closure of elBulli. Adria wanted to keep the history of elBulli alive and to give future generations the chance

to learn and experience the creativity of elBulli. The new building is poised to be modern as well

as ecological, to reflect the organic and artistic principles of elBulli. This unique structure will house every element of the elBulli chronological history, demonstrating the entire evolution of its culinary journey. It will be a permanent space to keep an archive of elBulli’s past, yet be a playground to further experiment with creative culinary processes.

The architecture will include an “idearium”, an audio-visual room, an exhibition space for permanent and temporary galleries, a pop-up restaurant, as well as a multi-disciplinary space.

Further plans will be revealed in the future.

BullIPedIa For the first time in Asia it was announced that, to keep up with the constantly-changing times even in the culinary world, the elBulli foundation will see the inauguration of a revolutionary and exceptional online tool for all – Bullipedia.

Bullipedia will be an in-depth online archive of a new culinary classification and organisation (including ingredients, elaborations, concepts and techniques). This application, with a search engine tool, will allow users to access curated culinary information and explore their own ideas while learning, and challenge and inspire other users.

Adria says that this will be the first such concept and online tool for top level western gastronomy. He estimates that there will be more than tens of thousands of new dishes added to this online encyclopaedia and database, per year.

“It’s crazy, I know. But we are going to be crazy with this,” smiles Adria.

“I know it is a big challenge. But if you have no passion, you have no life," he adds.

Ferran adrIa – The manRenowned for relentless pursuit of culinary creativity and excellence, Adria was head chef and innovator of elBulli. He brought elBulli from one Michelin Star to three Michelin Stars in a short span of time, being named World’s Best Restaurant five times.

Adria is also founder of the techno-emotional food movement where the focus is not only to give diners an experience with the palate but with all five senses.

He says, “elBulli is not a restaurant. It is the edge of gastronomy.”

The “Adobo” Chicken ($28), braised chicken slow-cooked in marinade “Adobo” style, is undoubtedly the highlight of the menu. This concoction was nothing short of ambrosial. Served with warm tortillas, it is a main course that’s sure to please your tongue and your tummy.

To help you wash down the food and even revitalise you, J’s sodas ($8) are truly refreshing. Try the Pineapple, Green Apple or Mango Lemonade. If you prefer a mocktail ($8), the Cuban Mint or Puerto Rican Colada are other refreshing options.

J’s has some interesting desserts to satisfy your sweet tooth as well. The Bocas Negras ($12) is a flourless chocolate with a triple-chocolate gelato. The fudge in the chocolate cake is thick and rich, while the gelato is as good as Haagen Dazs’ Belgian Chocolate but not as creamy and sinful.

The Bread and Butter Pudding ($10), while simple-sounding, is also sweet and satisfying. However, it is a bit heavy as a dessert and should be shared.

J’s has recently received its Halal-certification. Joy says there are not many mid-range Halal restaurants and this makes J’s a great dining option.

The wholesale area of Tsukiji Market, open to the public, showcases the freshest seafood such as octopus, fugu (puffer) fish and slabs of fresh tuna. Start your day off with fresh sashimi. hARAjuku ANd mOREIf you are interested to see the colourful dressing of Japanese subculture, head to Harajuku, especially on a Sunday, to see them in their full glory. You can also head to Shinjuku for shopping.

Should you feel more adventurous, head to the neighbouring Kabukicho district to see the ladies of the night, love hotels and pachinko – slot machine – parlours.

Apart from sightseeing, eating is a big part of Japan. On a cold evening, a bowl of ramen from any stall on the street will warm the stomach. Each shop has its own way of preparing ramen and all of them are just as good. It doesn’t cost a bomb either!

Most of the food is ordered through a vending machine to expedite the process. After you’ve tried the street food in Japan, you’d never want to settle for less.

The takoyaki is crispy on the outside but soft and chewy on the inside. The closest you’d get in Singapore is from the Gindaco chain from Tokyo.
