SOURCE Wall of ResilienceFranklin Patterson Hall, exteriorCreated as a Div III project by Mikaela Gonzales 13F, this mural reflects the power, connectivity, and divinity of femmes and trans femmes of color in the fight for Black and Brown liberation. The medium was chosen for its ability to express political realities through collective imagination. A mural takes the form of a monumental public installation, a work of art that is accessible and reflects community dialogue. From the conception of the project, the artist recognized the importance of working collaboratively, valuing the voices of many, and the mural was imagined and co-created by members of Hampshire College SOURCE (Students of Under-Represented Cultures and Ethnicities). This public artwork responds to a need to simultaneously claim space and build resilience in community. The mural is installed on the west-facing exterior wall of Franklin Patterson Hall, where it stands as a permanent offering to past, present, and future communities of color at the College, working against white supremacy, patriarchy, and transphobia within the campus culture and far beyond. (Description taken from the artist’s statement)

Curated by Gallery Alumni Fellow Charlotte Hawkins 13FFeaturing new and recent work by faculty teaching across the visual arts, architecture and art history, this exhibition showcases the rigorous research, formal acuity and experimentation, and creative and critical questioning that underpins arts pedagogy at Hampshire.

Wayfinding: Bill Brayton and Naomi DarlingR.W. Kern Center, GalleryWall sculptures by Bill Brayton, professor of art, read like architectural drawings in space across the walls of the Kern gallery. They are inspired in part by Polynesian nautical stick charts — early navigational aids that mapped ocean swells — and sculpted from locally sourced steam-bent white oak and a lightweight hybrid concrete of his own devising. The sculptures are presented in dialogue with etchings by Naomi Darling, assistant professor of sustainable design, in which she layered historical maps and geological surveys of the Connecticut River Valley and Long Island Sound with markers of her own movement and memory in each region. The etchings’ frames are made of leftover pine from the Kern Center construction, reflecting Hampshire’s ethic of reuse and sustainability.
