ELA

❖ Standards: CC.L.3.1.A- Explain the function of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.

CC.RL.3.1- Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding, referring to the

text.

CC.RL.3.2- Recount stories and determine the message, lesson or moral.

Page 3: Week of: December 3 Third Grade · ELA: Theme, Point of View, Idioms, Writing Quotations, Visualize, In-formative Writing- Compare and Con-trast Math: Module 3/ Topic B-Multiplica-tion

CC.1.3.2.E- Describe the overall structure of a story, including describing how the be-

ginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action.

CC.1.4.3.C- E03.C.1.2.1 Introduce a topic for the intended audience, and group re-

lated information together to support the writer’s purpose.

❖ Objectives: SWBAT identify the theme of a story. SWBAT use visuals to help determine the message in the story.

SWBAT use idioms correctly . SWBAT write informative response paragraph using details.

SWBAT identify and spell homophones. Science

❖ Standards: Standard - 3.1.3.A1

Describe characteristics of living things that help to identify and classify them.

Standard - 3.1.3.A2

Describe the basic needs of living things and their dependence on light, food, air, wa-

ter, and shelter.

Standard - 3.1.3.A3

Illustrate how plants and animals go through predictable life cycles that include birth,

growth, development, reproduction, and death.

Standard - 3.1.3.A5

Identify the structures in plants that are responsible for food production, support, wa-

ter transport, reproduction, growth, and protection.

❖ Objectives: SWBAT define and explain the term adaptation, camouflage, and mimicry. SWBAT discuss how different frog tongues are better for eating some types of foods. SWBAT explain how adaptations help plants and animals survive in their envi-ronment. SWBAT define and explain the term hibernate and migrate. SWBAT explain the difference between instinctive and learned behaviors. SWBAT use the five steps of the engineering design process to make a model of a technology to help caribou safely migrate across a highway. SWBAT apply the scientific concept of migration.

Math ❖ Standards:

o Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division. 3.OA.3 Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown num-ber to represent the problem. (See Glossary, Table 2.)

Page 4: Week of: December 3 Third Grade · ELA: Theme, Point of View, Idioms, Writing Quotations, Visualize, In-formative Writing- Compare and Con-trast Math: Module 3/ Topic B-Multiplica-tion

3.OA.4 Determine the unknown whole number in a multiplication or divi-sion equation relating three whole numbers. For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each of the equations 8 × ? = 48, 5 = _ ÷ 3, 6 × 6 = ?.

o Understand properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division. 2 3.OA.5 Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide. (Students need not use formal terms for these properties.) Examples: If 6 × 4 = 24 is known, then 4 × 6 = 24 is also known. (Commutative property of multiplication.) 3 × 5 × 2 can be found by 3 × 5 = 15, then 15 × 2 = 30, or by 5 × 2 = 10, then 3 × 10 = 30. (Associative property of multiplication.) Know-ing that 8 × 5 = 40 and 8 × 2 = 16, one can find 8 × 7 as 8 × (5 + 2) = (8 × 5) + (8 × 2) = 40 + 16 = 56. (Distributive property.)

o Multiply and divide within 100. 3.OA.7 Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 × 5 = 40, one knows 40 ÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit

❖ Objectives: SWBAT use the distributive property as a strategy to multiply and divide using units of 6 and 7. SWBAT interpret the unknown in multiplication and division to model and solve problems using units of 6 and 7. SWBAT understand the function of parentheses and apply to solving problems. SWBAT model the associative property as a strategy to multiply.

Social Studies ❖ Standards:

Standard - 8.2.3.C

Identify and describe how continuity and change have impacted Pennsylvania history.

Standard - 8.1.3.A

Identify the difference between past, present and future using timelines and/or

other graphic representations.

❖ Objectives:

SWBAT understand the use of a flowchart. SWBAT identify the steps in a flowchart. SWBAT create a flowchart. SWBAT identify ways that ancient civilizations influence life today. SWBAT describe the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Sumer, Egypt, China, Rome, and Mali.
