Bell Ringer 53Knowledge and Understanding (LOTS)

Copy the question then answer using complete sentence formation.

1. What are the specialized parts ( tissue and cells) of a plant?

2. How does the stomata and guard cells function together?

3. What are the primary functions of: roots, stems, and leaves?

Page 4: Week of 4-22-13 Mrs. Tate D110- Biology/Chemistry.

Notes: Xylem and Phloem ( page 580- 581)

Phloem and xylem are complex tissues that perform transportation of food and water in a plant. They are the vascular tissues of the plant and together form vascular bundles. They work together as a unit to bring about effective transportation of food, nutrients, minerals and water.Comparison Chart : Comparison chart.docx

Adaptations of Flowering Plants Procedure: I. Go to the following website: http://

www.mbgnet.net/bioplants/adapt.html

II. Pick three biomes, and read about the adaptations of plants in these biomes. III. For EACH biome, create a graphic organizer that shows the adaptations of plants in the biome. IV. Be sure to include reproductive adaptations. V. In addition, explain why these adaptations are evolutionarily significant. Biomes: Dessert, Grasslands, Rainforests, Deciduous Forest, Water, Tundra, and Taiga

Page 6: Week of 4-22-13 Mrs. Tate D110- Biology/Chemistry.

Example of Findings Desert: Long root systems; short life cycle (germinate in response to rain, grow, flower, and die within one year to avoid problems due to drought); waxy coating on the leaves and stems to help prevent water loss. Some plants store water in the stems or leaves. Some plants have no leaves. Flowers open at night to attract pollinators who are more likely to be out during the cooler night temperatures and are slower growing (requires less energy). These adaptations are evolutionarily significant because plants would not be able to survive in desert climates without the ability to with stand the high heat and low availability of water. Because of these adaptations, there are a wide variety of plants that are specifically suited to life in the desert.

Interactions in TRANSPORTING OXYGEN

• RESPIRATORY – delivery of oxygen and removal of carbon dioxide.– Trachea – tube connecting to the lungs– Alveoli –round sacs in the lungs– Moves oxygen from air to blood– Moves carbon dioxide from blood to air

•CARDIOVASCULAR – carries oxygen from lungs to bloodstream

•MUSCULAR – enables air to enter lungs

• Diaphragm – dome shaped muscle

Page 35: Week of 4-22-13 Mrs. Tate D110- Biology/Chemistry.

Interactions in DIGESTING FOOD

• DIGESTIVE – breaks down food into simpler substances to be used by body cells– Mouth and Stomach – begins to break

down food– Small Intestine – Completes the

breakdown of food and absorbs the nutrients (through villi)

– Large Intestine – undigested food passes out of the body as waste

Page 36: Week of 4-22-13 Mrs. Tate D110- Biology/Chemistry.

Interactions in DIGESTING FOOD

•MUSCULAR – moves jaws to break down food.

• Absorption of nutrients

• Enables you to swallow food

• Within the stomach – food is churned and squeezed, broken down into smaller particles

Page 37: Week of 4-22-13 Mrs. Tate D110- Biology/Chemistry.

Interactions in DIGESTING FOOD

•CARDIOVASCULAR – carries nutrients absorbed through the small intestine to the blood.

•Nutrients are carried throughout the body.

Page 38: Week of 4-22-13 Mrs. Tate D110- Biology/Chemistry.

MOVEMENTS: MUSCLES, BONES, AND NERVES

•MUSCULAR – produce movement by contracting or shortening

•SKELETAL – muscles attached to bones move your body

•NERVOUS – involved in movement. Brain and nerves direct muscles to contract.

•CARDIOVASCULAR – circulates oxygen and food to cells

•RESPIRATORY – brings oxygen into body, removes carbon dioxide

•DIGESTIVE – processes food for delivery to cells

Page 39: Week of 4-22-13 Mrs. Tate D110- Biology/Chemistry.

Protection: Immune, Integumentary and Skeletal

All of the systems below aide in protecting the organism.

SKELETAL – covers vital organs; makes white blood cells

INTEGUMENTARY – protects against water loss, covers the entire body.

IMMUNE– makes anti-bodies protection against diseases/infections.

Page 40: Week of 4-22-13 Mrs. Tate D110- Biology/Chemistry.

Blood Production and Transportation

SKELETAL – red bone marrow produces red blood cells. White blood cells ( or leukocytes) are produced in the yellow/white marrow of the body.

CARDIOVASCULAR – circulates blood throughout the entire body. Blood is pumped by the heart, but those cells are produced within the marrow of the skeletal system.

IMMUNE- releases white blood cells as a part of the immune response.

Page 41: Week of 4-22-13 Mrs. Tate D110- Biology/Chemistry.

Waste Removal and Hormones

Waste Removal: The Blood is transported to the kidneys ( by way of the circulatory system) so that it can be filtered out of any toxins. The kidneys are part of the urinary (excretory) system.

Hormones: Hormones are produced by glands located within the endocrine system. Hormones are circulated by the blood (cardiovascular).
