Who Are You?Who Are You?

Looking. Feeling. Thinking. I know you. I know who you are.

What is your name? Your eyes reflect someone I know.

I’m digging. Digging with the shovel that is my mind.Searching. I know you.

Who are you? Why are you here? These questions poundthrough my skull.

It is painful to try and comprehend who you might be. I knowmany yet remember so little.

I know you. I know I do. Do not give up on me. I will rememberyour name.

But wait? What is this? I see you. A black and white grainyimage, like that of an old camera.

Why do you keep running from me? Escaping from my mind?

I try to catch you yet you are too fast. You run away, as swiftand gentle as the wind.

The hands that are my eyes try to reach you. I see you. I knowyou. But who are you?

You know me. You know my name. You know why you arehere.

You must be someone close to me. Why can I not see youclearly?

I have been digging for a long time now yet the deeper I go,the further away you seem.

You are no longer a gentle breeze but a hurricane, spiralingaround and around. I can hear you. I can see you.

But there is something missing. The missing piece of thepuzzle.

My memory of you.

#weThrive@MacKillop College#weThrive@MacKillop College

As we resume our new normal at the College we haverefocused on our goals for 2020. As we evaluate and explorethe educational learnings of COVID19, here at MacKillopCollege we have been very focused on being strategic anddeliberate rather than reactive. As we process the new data wewill be ensuring that we align it with the growth areas identifiedthrough our 2019 School Improvement Planning process andour NEST future planning project in 2019-2020.

GoalGoal 1:1: For students and staff to have a deeper understandingof, and to be more authentic witnesses within our faithcommunity.

GoalGoal 2:2: To improve student outcomes through purposefulengagement.

GoalGoal 3:3: For our school community to thrive by enhancingpositive relationships.

One of the key learnings in recent times has been theimportance of identifying and recognising each individual'sstrengths and how we can best utilise them to maximise ourlearning, foster healthy relationships and deal with what lifethrows at us.

Recognising each person's different gifts and strengths iscritical to a thriving community and to enabling each individualwithin the community to thrive. Last Friday our Leader ofWellbeing, Mrs Nicole O’Connell ran a beautiful liturgy focusedon strengths and gifts. I have included below the scripturepassage which so aptly embraces this message.

I have also included the 24 character strengths which areincorporated in the MacKillop College strengths-basedapproach, a key element in our 2020 Pastoral Care andWellbeing program. Each student has identified their top fivesignature strengths and are encouraged to use these to enablethem to thrive and to cope when challenges arise. I encourageparents to discuss their child’s strengths and how they canuse them in their current circumstances. Parents may also liketo identify their own and discuss these with your sons anddaughters.

To take the survey to identify your own strengths go tohttps://www.viacharacter.org/character-strengths-via

The Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ (14th June2020)

“I am the living bread, which has come down from heaven.Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever; and the bread thatI shall give is my flesh, for the life of the world.” (John 6:51)

The Eucharist is something that we have not been able toreceive during this time of COVID-19 Lockdown and so it hasme thinking about the importance of receiving Communion andthe gift that this offers to each of us, as we head into thesolemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, this Sunday.

The Eucharist is a spiritual nourishment offered to us, whichallows us to be united with Christ in his humanity, and throughthe promise his resurrection offers. Bread was one of thestaples of life in the time of Jesus and so it is not surprising thathe used the imagery of the ‘life-giving’ nature of eating breadto explore the idea of the promise of eternal life through hissalvation. By receiving Christ in the Eucharist we are then takingpart in his death and resurrection and opening ourselves to thispromise of a life in Christ beyond this one.

While we have not been able to take part in the Mass andreceive the Eucharist during this time, there are many ways thatwe can still remain united with Christ, through the Holy Spiritdwelling in us. Finding simple and creative ways to pray is oneway. Below is one idea, called the “Five Finger Prayer”.

Assistant Principal

MacKillop College has a working partnership with ParentingIdeas (School), a parent support group providing advice, information and resources on a range of topics related to raisingyour family. Leading parent educators including Dr JustinCoulson and Michael Grose contribute their knowledge andexpertise to this support group.

Today, I share with you a recent article from Michael Groseabout the benefits of a collaborative parenting style – benefitshe has seen evidenced throughout our recent COVID-19 familyisolation time. He does believe, however, that this parenting is

a standout for all times and discusses in his article the mainfeatures of collaborative parenting.

I hope you enjoy and pick up some tips to add to your parentingtoolkit.

Collaborative parenting style wins the dayCollaborative parenting style wins the day

The close quarter living that most of us have experienced duringthe COVID-19 pandemic has tested the patience andcommunication skills of even the most assured parent. Theconstancy of members living together is a test of familymanagement skills, revealing any flaws or limitations that exist.

Those who rely on a coercive (“do as I say”) approach probablydiscovered that dominance works well in small doses, but failsmiserably over the long-term, with family harmony severelyimpacted.

Parents who use a laissez-faire (“she’ll be right”) approach mayhave found that one or more children struggled with a lack ofstructure. In the absence of positive leadership, a child morethan likely stepped up to fill the void, rendering parents withlimited influence

Those who used a parallel (“you go your way, I’ll go mine”)approach may have experienced a relatively quiet parentalexistence, but this will more than likely come at the expense ofgroup cohesion and children’s mental health.

Life in the family cocoon has suited parents that use a moreinclusive, collaborative parenting style. This is a style that giveschildren a voice, commensurate with their developmentalstages, in how the family conducts itself.

Features of a collaborative familyFeatures of a collaborative family

Parents who adopt a collaborative approach impact familyculture in positive ways, so that their family becomes acollaborative unit. Here are some features shared bycollaborative families.

- Respect is a key value- Respect is a key value

This style of leadership treats kids with respect but importantly, expects respectful, considerate behaviour from children inreturn. When kids fail or forget to practise respectful treatmentof others they are respectfully brought into line and reminded oftheir responsibility to others.

- Kids contribute- Kids contribute

Kids in collaborative families generally help out without beingpaid. A jobs’ roster is the preferred method for ensuring kidscontribute as authority is diverted from parent and rests with thegroup instead.

- Language is co-operative- Language is co-operative

Parents who adopt a collaborative approach generally uselanguage that invites children to cooperate. They also use theword “We” a great deal. “We’re relying on you to set the tablebefore dinner” reminds a child or teenager of their contributionto the family good.

- Rituals are strong- Rituals are strong

3

Page 4: Week 7, Term 2, 12th June...Week 7, Term 2, 12th June School Vision and Mission Our Mission “Enabling every student to achieve the fullness of life.” Our Vision “MacKillop College

Collaborative families also use rituals such as mealtimes, special days and the like to build strong family bonds. Thesestructured get-togethers are balanced with plenty of informal, fun activities where members can enjoy each other’s company.

- Decision-making is shared- Decision-making is shared

Most parents who successfully adopt a collaborative leadershipstyle have a process that engages kids in familydecision-making and resolution of conflict between siblings. Aregular family meeting or council is a common forum used bycollaborative family leaders. These meetings may take time toget right and some effort to convince all family members oftheir benefits, however once they’re embedded they becomean invaluable part of a family’s culture.

There are many ways and methods you can use to successfullyraise a family, however not every method stands up to thescrutiny of close quarter living we’ve been encountering. Withmore time at our disposal, a wonderful opportunity exists toimplement a collaborative leadership style, that will bringbenefits well after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over the coming week students in Year 8 are being encouragedto perform acts of kindness. In each PC, students will randomlybe allocated the name of another person from their PC. Thisperson will be their specific focus for kindness. Kind acts, however, are not to be limited to this person alone, but are tobe extended to as many people as possible. Kindness benefitsboth the receiver and the giver. It is making Jesus real in thehere and now through our own actions.

Year 11

Well this week was fun! Sure we embraced our College motto"Strive for Excellence", did all our homework, applied ourselvesin class, felt the pressure of impending due dates, handedin all our assessments and at times felt a little overwhelmedbut we also had fun. I have to say that when I suggestedthe skipping I didn't think that Year 11 would embrace it asmuch as they did. There were practices in PC time, lunchtimeand on our additional 'sport' day. Lots of laughs, cheering andencouragement was witnessed. Some great videos have beenproduced which will start to appear on our school Facebook ifthey haven't already.

At the time of writing this report, only the winners of three of thefour categories had been determined.

Looks like ‘double dutch’ is going to be the decider, anythingcould happen from here! Look out for the videos mentionedand photos to come in future newsletters.

The other fun for the week was our additional sport day. MrsHuxley and I were out with Year 11 and 12 students on theoval, in the hall and the area outside the hall playing a plethoraof physical activity. I had a quick scan around the school anddetermined that of our 252 senior students there wereapproximately 230 playing a sport or game of some kind. Soawesome.

Thanks Year 11 for being so enthusiastic about pretty mucheverything, really proud of you all.

Have a great weekend.

Study Skills & HSC trial Examination PreparationStudy Skills & HSC trial Examination Preparation

This Wednesday during extended PC, Year 12 attended atutorial on study skills presented by Assistant Principal Mr AdamKelly. This tutorial was a reminder of the skills that they havebeen taught in the past and was a timely reminder as studentshead into the trial HSC preparation. One of the key reminderswas that preparation for exams should start early, with studynotes being kept and revised regularly. Those students whohave already established thorough routines were able to spendthe time studying, hopefully doing practice questions orextension reading, which is the key to writing well andperforming in exams.

Thursday Barbecue BreakfastThursday Barbecue Breakfast

Our Year 12 students have been hosting a BBQ breakfastevery second Thursday. This is creating a lovely atmospherebetween the two senior year groups. This positive relationshipis something we wish to foster as Year 12 has so much tooffer Year 11 students, in terms of advice and support. Thereare already some lovely friendships between the students andthis initiative is a lovely way to support this positive culture. Welook forward to a time when Covid-19 restrictions ease and wecan invite parents to share breakfast and coffee together aswell. There is a lovely vibe at our senior cafe each morning asstudents and teachers chat whilst waiting for coffees. This isthanks to our senior students who volunteer in our cafe, usingtheir Barista and communication skills to give us all a positivestart to the day. Each coffee is served with a beautiful smile andsome personalised art.

Towards the HSC and BeyondTowards the HSC and Beyond

Mr Michael Kelly continues to deliver his extremely helpfulcareers newsletter which has details and information regardingall things careers (universities, TAFE and more). Youth Ministry (YMOs)

This week our YMOs, Georgia and Conor, focused on theHoly Trinity. Georgia and Conor have continued their onlineministry via MacKillop’s ministry Instagram page(@mackillop_youth_ministry). We continue to encourage staff, students and parents to follow this page as the focus is tospread faith and encouragement whilst building a greater senseof community.

Last week, Georgia and Conor focused on the celebration ofPentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit. The successfullaunch of their brand new lunch time youth groups -‘Lighthouse’ for Year 7 and Year 8 students on a Thursdayand ‘J.O.L.T (Jesus Over Lunch Time)’ for Year 9 and Year 10students on a Friday has bought in many new students in ourschool community who are interested in exploring their faith.

At the beginning of this week, our YMOs challenged studentsto participate in ‘Bible Bingo’ which involves the participantopening the Bible to a random verse, reading it and prayingabout it throughout the week.

This week’s theme was ‘The Most Holy Trinity’, taken fromSunday’s Gospel and our YMOs talked more about what theTrinity is and how it is important to our Church in their weeklyIGTV that was posted today on the Instagram account.

Next week, Conor and Georgia will continue to run theirlunchtime youth groups in the chapel and the theme will bebased on the scripture ‘Whom shall we Fear’.

Future RehearsalsFuture Rehearsals

Given recent events one would be forgiven for lacking thedrive to practice and attend rehearsal. However, it is importantfor students and families involved in the Co-curricular Musicprogram to understand that there is still a reason to rehearse.Students who regularly attend will continue to develop theirsocial and emotional well being, teamwork skills andorganisational skills. In addition they will learn the value ofpractice and persistence.

Furthermore, in the absence of performance opportunities inthe short term the focus of rehearsals will be directed towardsthe Junior Instrumental Recital scheduled for September andthe Co-curricular Music and Dance Awards Ceremony inNovember. In addition, singers will be working towards theannual Sing for the Solomons Concert also scheduled forNovember. Providing additional interest over the comingmonths will be the opportunity for ensembles to be digitallyrecorded. This recording will be shared in term 4 as part of aCo-curricular Music and Dance Showcase package.

So, there remains a reason to continue waking early to attendrehearsal. There remains a reason to continue practicing and areason to keep music making part of your family.
