YEAR 1 CLASS NEWS Year 1 has had yet another busy term. We have been excited about the start of Zumba for Sport, learning loads of fun moves. In Science, we are learning about sound and light with the unit called Look! Listen! The children thoroughly enjoyed our positive education day which included reflecting on what they like about themselves, participating in mediation using smiling minds and fresh lavender. We are looking forward to our visit to Merton Court in week 6 to perform the Christmas songs we have been learning each Friday with the conservatorium of music. Year 1 will take part in intensive swimming at the end of week 6, which will be a breath of fresh air in this hot weather. DENMAN RSL BURSARY TEST Yesterday Mrs Druitt accompanied 8 year 6 students who took the opportunity to participate in the Denman RSL Bursary Test. The test which comprises of two papers focussing on General Maths and reading is an opportunity provided to RSL members children who are completing Year 6 this year. This year, students from three local schools attempted the test. The overall winner receives a financial prize which is presented at a Rotary dinner to be held on Wednesday 28th November 2018 at the Denman RSL. All year 6 students are invited to attend this dinner irrespective of whether they completed the testing. Thank you to the Denman RSL Club and Denman Rotary Club for their support of students in the Denman community.

RESURGENCE PROGRAM This semester, Year 4 have been taking part in an Art program called, “The Resurgence Project” run by Cherie Johnson from Speaking in Colour. The Resurgence program has been successful throughout a number of primary and high schools in NSW to help develop resilience, promote inclusion and acceptance and to promote the importance of Aboriginal education. Cherie has been teaching students about different coiling techniques that Aboriginal people in this region traditionally used to create a number of objects for daily use. This program not only connects students with Indigenous culture but also integrates a variety of Key Learning Areas. The project benefits all types of learning, in particular visual and kinetic learners. The individual weaves students created have been joined together to make a magnificent sculpture which will be displayed at Muswellbrook Regional Library along with a number of contributions from other participating schools in the Upper Hunter. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics have been a focus for our Year 5 students during computer lessons with Mr Morris. Students have programmed audio files to connect to the sculpture using the Makey Makey system allowing the sculpture to come to life. This year’s theme was ‘Air’ and DPS student’s decided to depict a king parrot. Our amazing creation will feature in the opening exhibition on Thursday December 6th. Families and community members are invited to attend.
