Week 5 Journal

214 KG

Our group makes a timber structure in the consturction workshop that is able to bear 214 KG!

Material we use: two 35mmX35mm timbers and one 18mmX45mm

plywood

Using one 35mmX35mm timber beam to cut into six parts and then put each two together in the middle of

the other two long timber beams. This structure is able to disperse the load from the top. The double small

timbers are superposed so it is enough stable for point load. In this structure, we use some different size of

nails to fixed the timber. And put the 18mmX45mm timber under the bottom which can make this structure

stronger.

Firstly, we have a measure of the two 35mmX35mm in order to cut the right length.

Then, we use hammer to allow two nails into double small timbers.

After that, using electric drill to drill three bigger and longer size

joists into one 35mmX35mm timber in order to connect

them.

We put the 18mmX40mm plywood under bottom and also use three longer nails to connect them. Before we

hammer these nails, we measure and draw where the other nails inside the timber in order to avoid them. Finally

we are done this work on time

Putting our model into a machine to measure how much

weight it can bear. From the picture on the right hand side,

the load is from the middle.

The model bears 214KG at the end. We can see the model broken the top and bottom

timber broken where there are no double timber in the middle. The double timber on the

right hand side separates because of the load. The top timber has more severe break than

the bottom one because there is a plywood bear under the bottom of timber.

This is another group’s model. It is box beams timber structure. They use two pieces of plywood naturally define an axial and bidirectional space. Due to this

plywood are perpendiculars that are not able to bear too much weight. Thus, they have broken away from the main timber first.

The drawing part

Case Study Building Name: ERC Building

From this drawing work, I know there are differences between plans, elevations, sections and details in drawing content. The information in the title block is

important as well because this information allows people to know what this kind of drawing is about. For example, the first letter is A in the drawing number which

is architecture drawing and otherwise it will be the other drawing such as engineering drawing.

There are lots of annotations in the plans of drawing content. These annotations have different

meaning. For example the left annotation is the building section reference.

The areas of the drawing are clouded in the plan which means the drawing is clouded if there is revision or change to

anything. This cloud helps to keep track of any changes.
