The Dalai Lamasupports RTL's 2007fundraising marathon High-profile sponsors for children's charityprojects, showbiz stars donating valuable giftsto be auctioned off, and 24 hours of all-outcommitment to children in need — that's whatRTL's fundraising marathon (RTL-Spendenmarathon) is all about, and this year'sshow even has the backing of the Dalai Lama.Germany - 10 October 2007

The 12th edition of RTL's live fundraising mara-thon, Germany's longest charity appeal pro-gramme, will start at 18.00 on 22 November2007 and go on to collect money continuouslyfor over 24 hours. In this way over the past 11years more than EUR 58 million have been rai-sed for children in need, providing lasting helpfor tens of thousands of kids.

“From the production point of view it's proba-bly the most strenuous programme on GermanTV. But it's so enjoyable making it, because weknow we can really help lots of kids, and thatmakes us happy”, said RTL charity supremoWolfram Kons.

This year's programme will again sponsor sixprojects designed to help children, includingtwo in Germany. The celebrities who have pled-ged to sponsor needy children this year includeEva Padberg, Boris Becker, Jörg Knör, PeterKloeppel, Anke Engelke and Hannes Jaenicke. But front man Wolfram Kons, who will be pre-senting the fundraising marathon designed toguarantee needy kids a decent existence isparticularly proud to have gained the backingof another helper this year: “It's a great honourfor us to collect funds to help the Dalai Lamaexpand the village for Tibetan refugee childrenin Suia”, he said.

The refugee village in India is home to some2,000 children, living in very cramped condi-tions. Each year, as many as 3,000 Tibetansleave their homeland and embark on a dange-rous journey across the mostly snow-covered

Himalayas to reach Nepal or India. Thirty percent of these refugees are children (some ofthem as young as 5 years old!) or youngsterswho can only gain a proper education at theDalai Lama's schools and children's villages inIndia.

“RTL's fundraising marathon has decided toreally help children”, the Dalai Lama said.“I appeal to you! Take part and make a lastingdifference, also for the sake of your childrenand your children's children”.

Project sponsor Hannes Jaenicke went to thechildren's village to check out the conditionsthere for himself. During RTL's fundraisingmarathon the actor will be reporting on his visitlive in the studio.

But this year's RTL charity show won't only besupported by high-profile sponsors and theDalai Lama. Hollywood star Bruce Willis, popicon Madonna, fashion guru Karl Lagerfeld, theboy band US 5, and many others have donatedpersonal items to be auctioned off to benefitneedy kids. These are valuable gifts that aren'tup for sale anyw-here and can onlybe obtained bybidding on RTL'smarathon fundrai-sing show.

RTL 8 launchedsuccessfully thanks tocooperation with BCEBackstage spoke to Tun van Rijswijck, the ChiefOperating Officer at Broadcasting CenterEurope (BCE), about his company's contributionto the launch of RTL 8 in the Netherlands. Luxembourg - 8 October 2007

At 17.15 on 18 August 2007, a new member ofRTL Group's family of Dutch TV channels, RTL 8,went on air for the first time, broadcasting theprogramme Het roer om. RTL Group'sLuxembourg-based subsidiary BroadcastingCenter Europe (BCE) supervised technicalaspects of the channel's launch.

Mr van Rijswijck, was the launch of RTL 8successful from the technical viewpoint? Totally. We're very happy that everything went sosmoothly and that there were no major hiccups. And that was no mean feat, because we wereonly able to start working on the project fourweeks before the channel was launched.

How exactly did your company contributetowards the channel's launch? We were informed about the technicalities ofbroadcasting from the channel's viewpoint. Tothat end, we built a final control room inLuxembourg with all the necessary technicalfacilities and also provided the server and spe-cialists from our team with the requisite technicalknow-how. For the time being, the final controlroom is hastily set up, but fully functional provi-sional arrangement. A definitive solution willsoon be set up directly in the existing controlrooms at RTL 4, 5 and 7.

Let's talk about some of the challengesposed by the project. How did you go abouthandling them?Undoubtedly, the short time frame for the projectrepresented by far the toughest challenge.

Getting a new channel ready to go on air in justfour weeks means working very hard with theconstant stress of having to meet a tight deadli-ne. Furthermore, the timing of the project wasunfavourable: bang in the middle of the summerholidays. As a boss it's no easy task to explainto your staff why their summer holidays unfortu-nately have to be postponed. Nonethless, rightfrom the outset it was clear that I could rely onmy team, because back in 2005 when RTL 7, theprevious newcomer to the group's Dutch familyof channels, was launched, many of my staffwent without their summer break. Finally, thepositive verdict awaited until recently about thedeal with Talpa Media from the Dutch competi-tion authority created uncertainty about theactual launching date.

How many of your staff members were invol-ved?Around 25. On the day of the launch, a dozenpeople were on hand here in Luxembourg.

How can viewers receive RTL 8? There are three possibilities: In the Netherlands,RTL 8 can be received via the satellite platformCanal Digitaal and by cable. In Luxembourg,

RTL 8 can also be received as part of theDVB-T package.

Had BCE already worked for the Dutch fami-ly of channels before? Yes. We have been responsible for several pre-vious launches: RTL 4 in 1989, RTL 5 in 1993and RTL 7 in 2005. In actual fact, we have over-seen the technical aspect of broadcasting forvirtually all the channels run by RTL Group, inclu-ding RTL Television, M6 and RTL TVI. The onlyexceptions have been Five, Antena 3, Ren TVand Vox.

BCE also works for other parties that don'tbelong to RTL Group. What have been yourbiggest projects for other people lately? Just recently we worked on the technical side ofbroadcasting and a digital news platform for theBulgarian TV channel Nova TV. That project wassuccessfully concluded on 18 August. Recently,we launched two special-interest channels forthe French broadcaster AB Groupe.

What about current projects? We have worked on a channel set up to mark 20years of RTL TVI in Belgium. This theme channel, dubbed “RTL TVi 20 ans” started on 20September and will run until mid January 2008.Another project we have worked on with RTL TVIand Vodafone involves mobile TV. On top of thatthere are a few projects in Eastern Europe, that I

can't tell you anything more about at this stage.Last but not least, we have created a platformfor RTL TVI and Télé Lëtzebuerg for the quiterecently launched community YoumakeTV andin cooperation with our colleagues we will conti-nue advancing the platform.

German Cartel Office closes proceedingsagainst IP Deutschland, for a fineThe German Federal Cartel Office closes the proceedings against the advertisingsales house IP Deutschland, against payment of a €96 million fine.Germany - 5 October 2007

After having conducted an industry-wide inves-tigation of the German TV advertising market, the German Cartel Office concluded that the“Share Deals”, which were common businesspractice in the past between advertising saleshouses and media agencies, represent a verti-cal anticompetitive practice.

In light of those concerns, IP Deutschland, asubsidiary of RTL Group’s RTL Television unit, has announced that it will not sign these dealsany more. Instead, it has developed a newsales offer, which will be introduced to the mar-ket shortly.

To ensure planning reliability for the mediaagencies, advertisers and the RTL channels, IP

Deutschland accepted the German CartelOffice’s proposal of a fast track settlement ofthe proceedings.

For the calculation of the fine, the GermanCartel Office has, for the first time, applied newrules of the 7th amendment to the German Actagainst Restraints of Competition and theGerman Cartel Office’s setting of fines whichresult in a significant increase of fines.

RTL Group remains confident that it will increa-se both revenues and operating results for thefiscal year 2007, as announced in August. RTLGroup will make the necessary provisions forthe fine in 2007.
