• Always wear heavy, long pants, long sleeves,boots, and gloves. Wearing safety leg guardsis recommended.

• Always wear foot protection. Do not go bare-foot or wear sandals. Stay clear of spinningline.

• Secure hair above shoulder length. Secure orremove loose clothing or clothing with looselyhanging ties, straps, tassels, etc. They canbe caught in moving pads.

• Being fully covered also helps protect youfrom debds and pieces of toxic plants thrownby spinning line.

• Stay Alert. Do not operate this unit when youare tired, ill, upset or under the int]uenca of al-cohol, drugs, or medication. Watch what youare doing; use common sense.

• Wear hearing protection.• Never start or run inside a closed room or

building. Breathing exhaust fumes can kill.• Keep handles free of oil and fuel.UNIT / MAINTENANCE SAFETY• Disconnect the spark plug before performing

maintenance except carburetor adjustments.• Look for and replace damaged or loose parts

before each use. Look for and repair fuelleaks before use. Keep in good workingcondition.

• Replace trimmer head parts that are chipped,cracked, broken, or damaged in any otherway before using the unit.

• Maintain unit according to recommended pro-cedures. Keep cutting line at proper length.

• Use only 0.080" (2 mm) diameter Weed Eat-er_ brand line. Never use wire, rope, string,etc.

• Install required shield prepedy before usingthe unit. Use only specified tdmmer head;make sure it is properly installed and securelyfastened.

• Make sure unit is assembled correctly asshown in this manual.

• Make carburetor adjustments with lower endsupported to prevent line from contacting anyobject.

• Keep others away when making carburetoradjustments.

• Use only recommended Weed Eater@ ac-cessories and replacement pads.

• Have all maintenance and service not ex-plained in this manual performed by an autho-rized service dealer.

FUEL SAFETY• Mix and pour fuel outdoors.• Keep away from sparks or flames.• Use a container approved for fuel.• Do not smoke or allow smoking near fuel or

the unit.• Avoid spilling fuel oroiL Wipe up all fuel spills,• Move at least 10 feet (3 meters) away from

fueling site before starting engine.• Stop engine and allow to cool before remov-

_,WARNING: Inspect the area beforeeach use. Remove objects (rocks, brokenglass, nails, wire, etc.) which can be thrownby or become entangled in line. Hard objectscan damage the trimmer head and be throwncausing serious injury.• Use only for trimming, scalping, mowing and

sweeping. Do not use for edging, pruning orhedge trimming.

• Keep firm footing and balance. Do not over-reach.

• Keep all parts of your body away from mufflerand spinning line. Keep engine below waistlevel. A hot muffler can cause serious bums.

• CL_from your right to your left. Cutting on leftside of the shield will throw debris away fromthe operaton

• Use only in daylight or good artificial light.• Use only for jobs explained in this manual.TRANSPORTING AND STORAGE• Allow engine to cool; secure unit before stor-

ing or transporting in vehicle.• Empty the fuel tank before storing or trans-

porting the unit. Use up fuel left in the carbure-tor by starting the engine and letting it run untilit stops.

• Store unit and fuel in area where fuel vaporscannot reach sparks or open flames from wa-ter heaters, electric motors or switches, fur-naces, etc.

• Store unit so line limiter blade cannot acciden-tally cause injury. The unit can be hung by thetube.

• Store unit OL_of reach of children.

SAFETY NOTICE: Exposure to vibrationsthrough prolonged use of gasoline poweredhand tools could cause blood vessel or nervedamage in the fingers, hands, and joints ofpeople prone to circulation disorders or ab-normal swellings. Prolonged use in coldweather has been linked to blood vessel dam-age in otherwise healthy people. ON/STOP SWITCHThe ON/STOP switch is used to stop engine. Tostop the engine, push and release the engineON/STOP switch.PRIMER BULBThe PRIMER BULB removes air from the car-buretor and fuel lines and fills them with fuel.This allows you to start the engine with fewerpulls on the starter rope. Activate the primerbulb by pressing it and allowing it to return toits original form.

CHOKE

The CHOKE helps to supply fuel to the engineto aid in cold starting. Activate the choke bymoving the choke lever to the FULL CHOKEposition. After the engine attempts to start, movethe choke lever to the HALF CHOKE position.Once engine has started, move the choke leverto the OFF CHOKE position.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

AdllWARNING: Be sure to read the fuelinformation in the safety rules before youbegin. If you do not understand the safetyrules, do not attempt to fuel your unit. Call1-800-554-6723.

FUELING ENGINE

_ WARNING: Remove fuel cap slowlywhen refueling.This engine is certified to operate on unleadedgasoline. Before operation, gasoline must bemixed with a good quality synthetic 2-cycleair-cooled engine oil designed to be mixed at aratio of 40:1. Poulan/Weed Eater brandsynthetic oil is recommended. Mix gasoline andoil at a ratio of 40:1. A 40:1 ratio is obtained bymixing 3.2 ounces (95 ml) of oil with 1 gallon (4liters) of unleaded gasoline. DO NOT USEautomotive oil or boat oil. These oils will causeengine damage. When mixing fuel, followinstructions printed on container. Once oil isadded to gasoline, shake container momentarilyto assure that the fuel is thoroughly mixed.

Always read and follow the safety rules relatingto fuel before fueling your unit.IMPORTANTExperience indicates that alcohol blendedfuels (called gasohol or using ethanol ormethanol) can attract moisture which leads toseparation and formation of acids during stor-age. Acidic gas can damage the fuel systemof an engine while in storage.To avoid engine problems, empty the fuel sys-tem before storage for 30 days or longer.Drain the gas tank, start the engine and let itrun until the fuel lines and carburetor areempty. Use fresh fuel next season.Never use engine or carburetor cleaner prod-ucts in the fuel tank or permanent damage mayoccur. See the STORAGE section for addi-tional information.HOW TO STOP YOUR UNIT• To stop the engine, push and release the

engine ON/STOP switch. The switch willautomatically return to the ON position.Wait 5 seconds before attempting to restartunit to allow switch to reset.

• If engine does not stop, move choke to theFULL CHOKE position.

turn while starting the engine. Avoid any con-tact with the muffler. A hot muffler can causeserious burns.

through all remaining steps.

8. Once the engine starts, allow it to run 10seconds, then move the choke lever to theOFF CHOKE position. Allow the unit to runfor 30 more seconds at OFF CHOKE be-fore releasing the throttle trigger.NOTE: If engine dies with the choke leverin the OFF CHOKE position, move thechoke lever to the HALF CHOKE positionand pull the rope until engine runs, but nomore than 6 pulls.

STARTING A WARM ENGINE1. Move the choke lever to the HALF CHOKE

position.2. Squeeze and hold the throttle trigger. Keep

throttle trigger fully squeezed until the engineruns smoothly.

3. PUll stader rope sharply until engine runs,bL_no more than 5 pulls.

4. Allow engine to run 15 seconds, then movethe choke lever to OFF CHOKE.

NOTE: If engine has not started, pull starterrope 5 more pulls. If engine still does not run, itis probably flooded.

STARTING A FLOODED ENGINEFlooded engines can be started by placingthe choke lever in the OFF CHOKE position;then, pull the rope to clear the engine of ex-cess fuel. This could require pulling the starterhandle many times depending on how badlythe unit is flooded.If the unit still doesn't start, refer toTROUBLESHOOTING TABLE or call1-800-554-6723.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONSIt is recommended that the engine not beoperated for longer than 1 minute at fullthrottle.OPERATING POSITION

5. Pull stader rope handle sharply until enginesounds as if it is trying to start, but do not pullrope more than 6 times.

6. As soon as engine sounds as if it is trying tostad, move choke lever to HALF CHOKEposition.

7. Pull starter rope sharply until engine runs,but no more than 6 pulls.NOTE: If the engine doesn't start after 6pulls (at the HALF CHOKE position),move the choke lever to the FULL CHOKEposition and press the primer bulb 6 times.Squeeze and hold the throttle trigger andpull the starter rope 2 more times. Movethe choke lever to the HALF CHOKE posi-tion and pull the starter rope until the en-gine runs, but no more than 6 pulls. If theengine still doesn't start, it is probably

_WARNING: Always wear eye protec-tion. Never lean over the trimmer head.Rocks or debris can ricochet or be thrown intoeyes and face and cause blindness or otherserious injury.Do not run the engine at a higher speed thannecessary. The cutting line will cut efficientlywhen the engine is run at less than full throttle.At lower speeds, there is less engine noise andvibration. The cutting line will last longer and willbe less likely to "weld" onto the spool.Always release the throttle trigger and allow theengine to return to idle speed when not cutting.

To stop engine:• Release the throttle trigger.• Push and release the engine ON/STOP

switch.

TRIMMER LINE ADVANCEThe trimmer line will advance approximately 2in. (5 cm) each time the bottom of the trimmerhead is tapped on the ground with the enginerunning at full throttle.The most efficient line length is the maximumlength allowed by the line limiter.AIways keepthe shield in place when the tool is being oper-ated.To advance line:• Operate the engine at full throttle.• Hold the trimmer head parallel to and above

the grassy area.• Tap the bottom of the trimmer head lightly

on the ground one time. Approximately 2 in.(5 cm) of line will be advanced with eachtap.

Always tap the trimmer head on a grassyarea. Tapping on surfaces such as concreteor asphalt can cause excessive wear to thetrimmer head.If the line is worn down to 2 inches (5 cm) orless, more than one tap will be required to ob-tain the most efficient line length.

_ WARNING: Use only 0.080" (2 mm)diameter line. Other sizes and shapes of linewill not advance properly and will result in im-proper cutting head function orcen cause se-rious injury. Do not use other materials suchas wire, string, rope, etc. Wire can break offduring cutting and become a dangerous mis-sile that can cause serious injury.

CUTTING METHODS

4D.WARNIN_: Use minimum speedand do not crowd the line when cutting aroundhard objects (rock, gravel, fence posts, etc.),which can damage the trimmer head, becomeentangled in the line, or be thrown causing aserious hazard.• The tip of the line does the cutting. You will

achieve the best performance and mini-mum line wear by not crowding the line intothe cutting area. The right and wrong waysare shown below.

• The line will easily remove grass andweeds from around walls, fences, trees andflower beds, but it also can cut the tenderbark of trees or shrubs and scar fences. Tohelp avoid damage especially to delicatevegetation or trees with tender bark,shorten line to 4-5 in. (10-13 cm) and useat less than full throttle.

• For trimming or scalping, use less than fullthrottle to increase line life and decreasehead wear, especially:• During light duty cutting.• Near objects around which the line can

wrap such as small posts, trees or fencewire.

• For mowing or sweeping, use full throttle fora good clean job.

TRIMMING - Hold the bottom of the trimmerhead about 3 in. (8 cm) above the ground andat an angle. Allow only the tip of the line tomake contact. Do not force trimmer line intowork area.

SCALPING - The scalping technique re-moves unwanted vegetationdown to theground. Hold the bottom of the trimmer headabout 3 in. (8 cm) above the ground and at anangle. Allow the tip of the line to strike theground around trees, posts, monuments, etc.This technique increases line wear.

MOWING - Your trimmer is ideal for mowingin places conventional lawn mowers cannotreach. In the mowing position, keep the lineparallel to the ground. Avoid pressing thehead into the ground as this can scalp theground and damage the tool

SWEEPING - The fanning action of the rotat-ing line can be used for a quick and easyclean up. Keep the line parallel to and abovethe surfaces being swept and move the toolfrom side to side.

switch functions properly by pushing andreleasing the switch. Make sure enginestops. Wait 5 seconds before attempting torestart unit to allow switch to reset. Restartengine and continue.

• Fuel Tank - Discontinue use of unit if fueltank shows signs of damage or leaks.

• Debris Shield - Discontinue use of unit ifdebris shield is damaged.

INSPECT AND CLEAN UNIT ANDLABELS• After each use, inspect complete unit for

loose or damaged pads. Clean the unit andlabels using a damp cloth with a mild deter-gent.

• Wipe off unit with a clean dry cloth.CLEAN AIR FILTERA dirty air filter decreases engine perform-ance and increases fuel consumption andharmful emissions. Always clean after every5 hours of operation.1. Clean the cover and the area around it to

keep did from falling into the carburetorchamber when the cover is removed.

2. Remove pads as illustrated.NOTE: To avoid creating a fire hazard orproducing harmful evaporative emissions, donot clean filter in gasoline or other flammablesolvent.

3. Wash the filter in soap and water.4. Allow filter to dry.5. Add a few drops of oil to the filter; squeeze

the filter to distribute oil.6. Replace pads.

_, WARNING: Muffler is very hot duringand after use. Do not touch the muffler or al-low combustible material such as dry grass orfuel to do so.As your unit is used, carbon deposits build upon the muffler and spark arresting screen.For normal homeowner use, however, themuffler and spark arresting screen will not re-quire any service,After 50 hours of use, we recommend that yourmuffler be serviced or replaced by your autho-rized service dealer.

REPLACE SPARK PLUGReplace the spark plug each year to ensurethe engine starts easier and runs better. Setspark plug gap at 0.025 inch. Ignition timing isfixed and nonadjustable.1. Twist, then pull off spark plug boot.2. Remove spark plug from cylinder and dis-

card.3. Replace with Champion RCJ-6Y spark

plug and tighten securely with a 3/4 inchsocket wrench.

4. Reinstall the spark plug boot.

LINE REPLACEMENT1. Remove spcol by firmly pulling on tap button.2. Clean entire surface of hub and spool.3. Replace with pre-woued spool, or cut a

length of 20 feet of 0.080" (2 mm) diameterWeed Eater _ brand line.

4. Insert one end of the line about 1/2 inch (1cm) into the small hole on the inside of spool

5. Wind the line evenly and tightly onto thespool. Wind in the direction of the arrowfound on the spool.

6. Push the line into the notche, leaving 3 to 5inches (7 - 12 cm) unwound.

7. Insert the line into the the exit holebin the hubas shown in the illustration.

8. Align the notch with the line exit hole.9. Push spool into hub until it snaps into place.10.Pull the line extending outside of the hub to

release it from the notch.CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT

WARNING: Keep others away whenmaking idle speed adjustments. The trimmerhead will be spinning during this procedure.Wear your protective equipment and observeall safety precautions.

The carburetor has been carefully set at thefactory. Adjustments may be necessary if younotice any of the following conditions:• Engine will not idle when the throttle is re-

leased.Make adjustments with the unit supported sothe cutting attachment is off the ground andwill not make contact with any object. Holdthe unit by hand while running and making ad-iustments. Keep all parts of your body awayrom the cutting attachment and muffler.

Idle Speed AdjustmentAllow engine to idle. Ad ust speed until engineruns without stalling (idle speed too slow).• Turn idle speed screw clockwise to in-

crease engine speed if engine stalls or dies.• Turn idle speed screw counterclockwise to

decrease engine speed.

41m.WARNIN_i: Perform the followingsteps after each use:• Allow engine to cool, and secure the unit

before storing or transporting.• Store unit and fuel in a well ventilated area

where fuel vapors cannot reach sparks oropen flames from water heaters, electricmotors or switches, furnaces, etc.

• Store unit with all guards in place. Positionunit so that any sharp object cannot acci-dentally cause injury.

• Store unit and fuel well out of the_reach ofchildren.

SEASONAL STORAGEPrepare unit for storage at end of season or ifit will not be used for 30 days or more.If your unit is to be stored for a period of time:• Clean the entire unit before lengthy storage.• Store in a clean dry area.• Lightly oil external metal surfaces.FUEL SYSTEMUnder FUELING ENGINE in the OPERA-TION section of this manual, see message la-beled IMPORTANT regarding the use of ga-sohol in your engine.

Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alternative inminimizing the formation of fuel gum depositsduring storage. Add stabilizer to the gasolinein the fuel tank or fuel storage container. Fol-low the mix instructions found on stabilizercontainer. Run engine at least 5 minutes afteradding stabilizer.ENGINE• Remove spark plug and pour 1 teaspoon of

40:1, 2-cycle engine oil (air cooled) throughthe spark plug opening. Slowly pull thestarter rope 8 to 10 times to distribute oil.

• Replace spark plug with new one of recom-mended type and heat range.

• Clean air filter.• Check entire unit for loose screws, nuts,

and bolts. Replace any damaged, broken,or worn parts.

• At the beginning of the next season, useonly fresh fuel having the proper gasoline tooil ratio.

OTHER• Do not store gasoline from one season to

another.• Replace your gasoline can if it starts to rust.

INTERRUPTOR ON/STOPSe usa el interrupter ON/STOP para detener elmotor. Para detener el motor, empuje y suelte elinterruptor ON/STOEBOMBEADOREl BOMBEADOR retira el aire de el carbura-dory de las llneas de combustible y las lienade mezcla de combustible, permitiendole pon-er el motor en marcha con menos tirones de lacuerda de arranque. Accione el bombeadoroprimi6ndolo y luego dejando que este re-cobre su forma original.

ABASTECIMIENTO DEL MOTOR

_,ADVERTENClA: Remueva la tapadel tanque de combustible lentamente al rea-bastecer combustible.

Este motor est& habllitado para fuacionar congasolina sin plomo. Antes de comenzar con eluso, se deber_ mezclar la gasolina con un aceitede sint6tico de buena calidad para motores de 2tiempos enfriados a aire. Recomendamos eiaceite de sint_tico de la marca PoulanNVeedEater. Mezcle ]a gasolina con el aceite en laproporci6n 40:1. Se obtiene una proporci6n de40:1 mezclando 3.2 onzas (95 ml) de aceitecon cada gal6n (4 Iitros) de gasolina sinplomo. NO USE aceite para autom6viles nipara barcas. Estos aceites daSaran el motor. AImezclar el combustible, siga las instruccionesimpresas en ei reclpiente. Una vez hayaaSadido el aceite a la gasolina, agite al recipientebrevemente para asegurar que ei combustibleest6 completamente mezclado. Siempre lea ysiga las instrucciones de seguridad que tienenque ver con el combustible antes de abastecerel aparato.

IMPORTANTELa experiencia indica que los combustiblemezclados con alcohol (los Ilamados gasoho]o los que contienen etanol o metano[) puedenatraer la humedad, Io que puede causar [a se-paraci6n y ia formaci6n de &cidos durante elalmacenaje. 8. Una vez que el motor arranca, permitaque el motor marche por 10 segundos,luego mueva la palancea del cebador enla posicion OFF CHOKE. Permita que elmotor marcha por 30 segundos con la pa-lanca del cebador en la posici6n OFFCHOKE antes de aoltar el gatillo acelera-don AVlSO: Si el motor se apaga con lapalanca del cebador en la posici6n OFFCHOKE, mueva la palanca a la posicionHALF CHOKE y tire de la cuerda de arran-que hasta que el motor se ponga en mar-cha, pero no m_s de 6 tirones.
