With most of the Seniors on the Senior Cruise and a significant number of HS students on the Beach Trip, it surely is quiet on this end of campus! I may have to spend more time in the MS this week to get my daily dose of teen noise! This is reminiscent of the week after graduation when it is just us adults on campus and the atmosphere feels palpably different. Once camps and summer school begin, we feel at home and comfortable again! It is truly countdown time. These last weeks of school are critical to complete projects, finalize grades, organize materials and equipment for next year, assess progress on goals and put our year in order. I am a proponent of year-round school because I do not think this abrupt stop and start to the learning process is helpful. However, the year-end activities do help us focus on the journey taken and celebrate the progress made. I suppose I should begin to share my thoughts on this being my last “stop and start” exercise here at TCS. I have tried really hard not to think about it. There is enough to do to keep my mind focused on other things. Growing up as an Air Force kid, I have had plenty of experience with saying goodbye and beginning new adventures….in some ways, I am most comfortable with change. But I have to admit, I have never done anything like this before! I have had quite a few jobs in my lifetime. I began teaching in 1968. I have loved each job and hated to leave when the time came. However, all those jobs were created by other people. I have never felt as responsible for the entire enterprise as I have for the last thirty years. Clearly, when something is the product of your ideas, resources and efforts, there is a major difference. Joe and I have worked to empower our staff, so we do not feel like we have to be here for things to be done well. But we love to be here. We love the interactions with the staff, students and parents. We love the day to day buzz that keeps you on your toes. We love seeing the incremental growth of our students as they gain confidence and come into their own. We have such respect for the courage it takes for our students to try something new when you experienced failure for so long. These students take their journey seriously and truly appreciate the assistance they receive. That process is also true of our staff, although in a completely different way. Every new teacher comes in to our system with traditional lessons and expectations. They are attracted to our unique model and look forward to having an opportunity to genuinely impact a student’s success. However, the width and depth of this job are not readily evident. The teachers who stay on (and the good ones do!) are committed to the progress they see and the relationships they form. They do not think in terms of specific tasks or hours on the job, they look forward to every day’s adventure. Working here is a true calling. I have never gotten over my love for this campus. Surrounded by early morning bird song, the fresh aromas of the seasons, the brilliant Spring sky and the vivid colors of the abundant trees…to me, this is a magical haven…a natural beauty tucked away from the madness and chaos that is modern Atlanta. We are so blessed to be able to settle on this hill. Our students and staff have been nurtured by the endless beauty that surrounds us every minute of the day and night. I believe our environment wraps our students (and us) in a calm and peaceful cloak that enables them to begin to relax and trust so that they can do the work they must do to prepare for their future. I will surely miss the view from my office window and the bluebird that visits my window sill every day in the Spring. Last week’s Staff Appreciation Week brought home how much I will miss all of the fabulous people who fill my days and my heart. Through the clutter and rush of the daily school tasks, we always find time to reach out to each other and share smiles, hugs, encouragement and laughter!

The Top Ten Reasons to Give to the Key Annual Fund
As the year closes, here are the top ten reasons why you should give to the Key Annual Fund.
(And if you’ve already given, we thank you!)
1. Our Students Annual Fund dollars enhance student life in countless unrecognized but crucial ways providing necessities such as books, microscopes, maps, computer software, art supplies and much more!
2. Our Teachers Great teachers make a great school. When you give to the Key Annual Fund, your contribution supports the work of professional educators who are shaping young minds!
3. Our Attention Giving to the Key Annual Fund ensures that we maintain the resources to recruit and retain the best educators for every grade/subject ensuring class sizes stay small and student/teacher ratios low.
4. Our Programs Key Annual Fund dollars go towards enriching arts and athletic programs, faculty teaching and professional growth, financial aid, technology, and campus enhancements.
5. Our Impact: We would need over $2,000,000 in endowment revenue to produce the benefits made possible by just $100,000 in Key Annual Fund donations.
6. Our Traditions Pay-Off days, Middle School Sock-Hop, Grandparents Day, Homecoming, Senior Night, Prom, Graduation-these are traditions that are the lifeblood of The Cottage School.
7. Our Community Over 40% of TCS Families receive need-based tuition assistance which is funded in part by the Key Annual Fund.
8. Our Parents Annual Fund Parent Participation Percentages serve as the measurement by which foundations rate community support and factors into their level of giving.
9. Our Commitment Because one student, educated at The Cottage School, can positively impact the lives of many. As our Executive Director Jacque Digieso says, “Never put a lid on a kid.”
10. Our School You chose The Cottage School because the structured learning environment, trained teaching staff, access to current technology, and a safe and accepting community were what you wanted for your child’s education. Your contribution to the Key Annual Fund is the “key” to making this possible. Because when you give, a door opens, and a child thrives.

PAC PICKS THIS WEEK
Dear Families,
Wow, it's May already! "School's almost out for
Summer!" We've enjoyed an amazing year here
at TCS and before we break for summer, the
PAC Board would like to take a moment and thank each and every one of
you for your willingness to step in and help out with your time, talent and
treasures making so many events and campus projects successful here at TCS!
As we've said before, your contribution not only helps the school, but gives us
an opportunity to get to know one another better. We have an awesome group
of parents!
Also, don't forget to continue clipping BoxTops for Education, using your
Smile.amazon.com account, Georgia Natural Gas, Kroger, Publix and Target
cards when you are shopping this summer. Taking advantage of these
giveback programs, benefits The Cottage School each time you shop.
Have a safe and enjoyable summer break!
The PAC Board
12 days of school left…where is your jacket?
Thankfully, spring is here so there won’t be a need for
coats again until the fall. Before the year-end, please
check the lost and found. You never know what you
might have “forgotten” over the past couple months.
Lost and Found bins are located in the ‘I’ building, RCC
and the Middle School front office. Please remind your
student to check to see if their missing belongings are there. Thanks
for your help in this matter.
With the end of the school year quickly approaching, we know many parents want to provide a special gift of appreciation to our Cottage School teachers and staff. At TCS, individual gifts are discouraged, so the Parents Association (PAC) offers an opportunity – for those wishing to participate – to give a gift of cash. The PAC will collect contributions from parents and will divide the total amount equally among all teachers and staff. The gift will be given to the staff with a note of thanks at the Year-End Luncheon, Thursday, May 28th. If you would like to participate, please send cash or checks in an envelope to the school office marked “PAC Year-End Gift” by Wednesday, May 20st. Checks should be made payable to TCS PAC. If you have any questions, please contact Brenda Hall or Becky Thelen.
HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU GIVE? Any amount you’d like to give is appreciated. Contributions range
from $10 to $500, with the average being $100.
Please respect TCS’s long standing tradition
and refrain from giving individual gifts. Thank you!
[email protected] Participants will learn chants, cheers and a dance. Don’t miss this chance to be part of the Cougar Spirit Team! No experience necessary . Minimum required-6.
