Exciting things will be happening during the month of March so plan to attend the Lenten worship services for Charlie’s awe-inspiring sermons. Make this a time of commitment and sacrifice to our risen Lord. Once again The Cross is in the sanctuary bearing testimony to the special occasion we know as Easter. Each week elements will be added to signify our Lord’s journey to His act of love for his chosen people. Watch. Witness. Wait.

It is such a blessing to have the Fellowship Hall and Sanctuary so full on Sunday mornings with our “regulars” and winter visitors. We realize it won’t be long before they start “pulling up stakes” and begin migrating back to their homes up north and hope when they do, they will leave knowing how much we enjoy them and look forward to their return. When speaking about our winter visitors, we can’t forget to mention those who join our Chancel Choir adding their voices to enrich the inspiring anthems chosen by Yvonne each week. We are grateful for all who lift their voices in song or ring hand bells to enhance our worship experience.

Yvonne and Merlene are such blessings to our church and we appreciate them and their music so much.

A note to both choirs:

NO rehearsals the week of Spring Break (March 9 thru March 13).

Chancel Choir - Following are my selections for March offertories:

March 01 (2nd Sunday in Lent:) “Take Root In My Heart,” Music by Vicki Tucker Courtney March 08 (3rd Sunday in Lent:) “Just for You “ Music and Adaptation by Robert Lau March 15 (4th Sunday in Lent:) “What the Lord Has Done in Me ” Words and Music by Reuben Morgan , Choral Setting Arranged by Lloyd Larson

March 22 (5th Sunday in Lent:) “Father” Words and Music by Herb Frombach. The composer dedicated this composition to his father, George Frombach.

March 29 (Palm Sunday:) “A King Came Riding By“ Words and Music by Douglas E. Wagner

The members of the Chancel Choir join me in bidding farewell to Winter Texan Sue Smith who is returning to Michigan on March 1. .

______________________________________________________________

Hand Bell Choir is rehearsing the following pieces for Lent...

“Our Lord and King Adore!” Douglas E. Wagner, based on the hymn tune ITALIAN HYMN, LYONS and DEN HERREN. Will be performed as the Prelude on March 1.

“Amazing Grace” NEW BRITAIN. W. Walker, Southern Harmony, 1835. Arranged by Tammy Waldrop. Performance date: TBD

“Sweet Hosannas Ring! All Glory, Laud and Honor” ST THEODULPH. Melchoir Teschner, 1584-1635. Arranged by Tammy Waldrop. Performance date: TBD

Two women responded to my invitation/appeal last month and came to a rehearsal. The choir and I are cautiously

optimistic both enjoyed being a “ding-a-ling” for a day. To say we enthusiastically welcomed them with open arms would be putting it mildly.

So, (fingers crossed) 2 down just 2 more adventuresome men or women to go in returning the choir to its rightful size.

You see, when choir membership diminishes, it equates to silenced notes in a composition - a bell‟s note can‟t be heard if no

one is available play it.

We rehearse a maximum of 30 minutes on Monday nights at 5:30 in the upstairs Bell Choir Room with the goal of having a piece ready each month to play as the Prelude.

The only criteria is a commitment to attend practice as much as possible but most importantly attend scheduled performances to play your bell note. If this intrigues you, consider observing a rehearsal. We have FUN, come join us!

I invite/welcome/encourage anyone who would like to sing the Cantata with the Choir to join us on Wednesday nights at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary for a 30-minute rehearsal.

In addition to a play book each choir member receives a part-dominant CD to assist them in learning the words and music.

My only request is a commitment to attend at least 3 rehearsals plus the final rehearsal.

The Living Last Supper

A Dramatic Musical Experience

by Ruth Elaine Schram

Performance Details:

Maundy Thursday Service of Worship, April 2nd, 7 o’clock in the Fellowship Hall

Performance time: Approximately 35 minutes

The Last Supper, one of Christianity's most significant events portrayed by Leonardo Da Vinci centuries

ago is brought to life in this remarkable work by Ruth Elaine Schram. Her music deftly and passionately

captures the event while one at a time each apostle delivers a poignant monologue expressing his

astonishment at Jesus' assertion one of them will betray Him that night.

Don’t miss this emotionally charged recreation of The Last Supper. It is truly a highly dramatic and

memorable presentation sure to keep the audience glued to their seats in stunned silence long after the

last note has sounded.

The names of those portraying the 12 Apostles will be announced in April’s newsletter. Tunes: “How Great His Love” “Is it I?” “King Triumphant” “His Hands” “You Are the Bread” (Communion will be served) “How Great His Love (Finale)

Card Inscription: Thank you for your expressions of sympathy.

We thank all the “Women of PW” for bringing a little joy to our Mom’s

home while she was still with us. She loved the Christmas Cactus and the beautiful wall Christmas Tree. Adelaide Marlatt, it was so

wonderful for us that you sang “Oh Come All Ye Faithful” for our

Mom, Shirley (Latham.)

She dearly loved being a part of the Presby Family.

The Men’s Group met at noon on Wednesday, February 04, in

the Café. A business meeting followed a sumptuous meal

prepared by Al DeGayner, indicating the men have their

priorities in order.

There will be no meeting in March as we will be attending the

Lenten Lunch at First Baptist Church. Do not despair: we will be

back and better than ever in April!

In the meantime here is some interesting feedback on projects

the Men „s Group has been

supporting.

News from Presbyterian Men...

A letter to the Presbyterian Men

From Mabel‟s Building Mission, Mission, Texas 24 January 2015

Dear Parishioners,

Thank you for your support of our building mission in Mexico. This home was built after we

had a real cool spell. We have had a good start this year with pleasant weather, cool nights and days in the 70‟s, good building weather! After Christmas the weather became cold and rainy but now it‟s warming and going to be dryer. We plan on building a total of

20 homes this year. Each home receives a box of food, blankets for each family member, a small bench, a table, a Spanish Bible, pots and pans, silverware, clothing fitted for each member, bicycles, toys, and any carpet or furniture we can find around the campground.

When someone replaces a chair, mattress, or hide-a-bed, we grab onto it and take it over. Enclosed is a photo of the builders. The mother is in a very shaded area. She lives with her 14-year old son who was in school when we built their home.

Thank you again and God Bless.

Sincerely, William A. Kunzman,

Coordinator

The little girl pictured to the left is 3-year old V. Chelsea Ailyn Lara who lives in Tamaulipas, Mexico, with her single mother. Chelsea’s education has been pre-paid by the Presbyterian Men through high school. Funds were deposited into a trust allowing annual withdrawals for tuition. A receipt was recently received for her tuition as a Kindergartner during academic year 2014-2015 . Editors’s Note: Won’t it be a fascinating journey on which the Presbyterian Men’s Group has embarked following this child through the years as she grows into an educated young woman. Bravo Men, Bravo!

Ministering to others

through Prayer and

Pray- er

Editor’s Note: When Gwen Hill tripped and fell in January, the congregation sent her a Prayer Comforter. The

following was in a card received January 29 expressing thanks....

Dear Presbyterian Ladies, I received the beautiful prayer quilt this week and I

cannot thank you enough for it. It has brought me much comfort knowing so many have thought of me and prayed for my recovery.

I am better now and hope to be back to normal in a few

more weeks. I know the prayer quilt has helped. May God Bless each and every one of you for all your

work. Gratefully, Gwen Hill

Editor’s Note: The following email from Ken Craven, dated February 13, arrived after he received a prayer comforter from the congregation when we learned he had been diagnosed with colon cancer and scheduled for surgery ....

February 13, 2015

Dear Congregation, As most of you know, I was diagnosed with colon cancer on December 23rd of last year. I had robotic surgery to remove the tumor at MD Anderson on January 26th. Surgery went well and the surgeon, Dr. George Chang, indicated that the tumor appeared not to have gone through the colon wall and that all of the lymph nodes that were removed appeared to look normal, but that the Pathology report forthcoming would tell us more about everything. We received the pathology report this week, and were delighted to hear that all 22 of the lymph nodes removed, along with the lymph glands showed no indication of cancer cells. It was discovered however that the tumor had invaded into the wall where there is fatty tissue and blood vessels. According to Dr. Chang, this might mean that microscopic cells could possibly be there, so he has suggested that I visit with an Oncologist there at MDA to assess the risk that this may present and what chemotherapy if any may be recommended, MDA is in the process of setting up this appointment.

I want to thank you all for your cards, calls and prayers and most especially the prayer quilt, which went with me everywhere during my stay at MDA. I ask for continued prayers as we learn and make decisions about the next step in this process. All I do know is that God has been with me all the way on this journey. If it had not been for the proactive stance of my family physician, Dr. Jonathon Martin, in searching for the cause of my hemoglobin count going down and recommending another colonoscopy, although I had this procedure less than 3 years prior, we would not have caught this nearly as early as we did.

Love and blessings to you all,

Editor’s Note: Received the following letter from Bud and Jerry Hanson‟s son after he received a Prayer Comforter from the congregation for knee surgery January 8….

January 29, 2015

Mrs. Beverly Jacobson

First Presbyterian Church

301 Highway 35 N

Rockport, Texas 78382

Dear Beverly and the Congregation of the First Presbyterian

Church,

While visiting my parents in Rockport, my wife and I have

had the pleasure of worshipping with your congregation many

times. We have also had the opportunity to offer prayers

and tie knots in other prayer comforters. We love the

concept of covering someone in need with prayer. So when

the congregation blessed me with a prayer comforter, I was

truly touched. I am pleased to report that the progress of

my recovery is clearly supernatural due to all of the

prayers I have received.

I took my prayer comforter to our Bible study group and had

them all add their prayer knots. It was truly a blessing to

me.

It is always wonderful to see God’s love exhibited through

His believers. Thank you all for your faithfulness and

love. You have touched my heart.

Your brother in Christ,

Sam Hanson

THANKS to the following for their generosity in donating flowers to The Community Table….

FLOWERS IN THE SANCTUARY on February 8 were given to the glory of God by Rusty and Ingrid Little in honor and celebration of their 37th wedding anniversary on Wednesday,

February 4. Both floral sprays were donated to The Community Table where they were divided into 14 bud vases to grace each table on Tuesday, February 10, which was hosted by Coastal Oaks Church. The contents of each bud vase was

then gifted to an unsuspecting diner before closing.

FLOWERS IN THE SANCTUARY on February 15 were given to the glory of God by Ingrid Little “in honor of all women (and men) who love Valentine‟s Day.” The floral arrangements were

donated to The Community Table to be divided into 14 bud vases for each table on Tuesday, February 17, hosted by First United Methodist Church and gifted to unsuspecting and appreciative diners before closing.

2014 Recap

There was an increase in client activity; 2,017 households, of which 618 were new clients. Food requests increased 31%, largely due to the discontinuation of the Commodities program.

Kid Care spent $32,829, mostly for school-approved clothing for children. A generous donation of $20,000 was received for this program.

Vouchers for clothing from Castaways for 1,631 people totaled a value of $28,138, for an average cost of $17.26 per person

The Christmas Basket gave out 579 baskets, providing meals for 1,498 people The “Day of Giving” brought in gifts of $27,588 from individuals and $16,693 in

matching funds from the Coastal Bend Community Foundation for a total of $44,271;

The Food Pantry at Good Samaritan is able to purchase most of its food from the Corpus Christi Food Bank for $0.14/lb for canned goods, $0.16/lb for frozen goods, such as chicken, lunchmeat or hot dogs. They do ask for donations of:

Small jars of peanut butter Small jars of jams or jelly Canned meat, such as tuna or chicken Canned chili or soups

All of these listed items must be purchased at regular costs from the Food Bank, so our donations of these items, or financial gifts, really help fill the pantry with items that go to every client who requests food. I am so grateful for the generosity of the people of First Presbyterian, as we help to offer assistance to our less fortunate neighbors; Thank You!

THANKS TO ALL WHO BRING Box Tops

to help Live Oak Learning Center!

Our school earns a dime for each box top, so they really add up. (Soup labels, which

we do not save anymore, were only worth a penny each!) You find these small pink

rectangles labels on General Mills cereals, Kleenex products, and on many other

items.

Our PTO uses this money to buy playground equipment, class sets of magazines, and

pay for field trips and other neat treats for students and teachers alike. Thank You

to the faithful who always remember to put Box Tops in the bag on the Fellowship

Hall bulletin board!! We are collecting more than EVER at JUST the time when I

NEED THEM MORE THAN EVER!!!

Mission Room SUNDAY HUNTING I had everything planned and had told my wife I would not be going to church with her

on Sunday. My wife reminded me that Sunday was the Sabbath Day and hunting a trophy buck should not be part of the Sabbath.

1. I scouted the area all summer

2. I searched out the best location for my tree-stand.

3. I set it all up a month ahead of time. 4. I trailed the herd.

5. I picked out a trophy buck.

6. Two days before opening day I rechecked every aspect of the hunt.

7. Everything was in place.

8. Sunday morning, I woke up at 2 am. 9. I put on my camo, loaded my pack, set out for my stand.

10. This was destined to be an epic hunt.

11. As I approached my deer stand…..

I called my wife and told her I had decided not to hunt on the Sabbath and

would meet her at church. The Sunday sermon was entitled "The Lord Works In Mysterious Ways".

Editor’s Note: Prayer Concerns and Celebrations have been moved to Pages 11 and 12 due to the volume of entries. ————————————————————————————————————————————————————— The following is a reprint from Gregg Braden dated February 11, 2013 submitted by Patsy Williams via email on January 15, 2015…

A member of the church , who previously had been attending services regularly, stopped going. After a few weeks., the pastor decided to visit him. It was a chilly evening. The pastor found the man at home alone, sitting before a blazing fire. Guessing the reason for his pastor’s visit, the man welcomed him, led him to a comfortable chair near the fireplace and waited. The pastor made himself at home but said nothing. In the grave silence, he contemplated the dance of the flames around the burning logs. After some minutes, the pastor took the fire tongs, carefully picked up a brightly burning ember and placed it to one side of the hearth all alone then he sat back in his chair, still

silent. The host watched all this in quiet contemplation. As the one lone ember’s flame flickered and diminished, there was momentary glow and then its fire was no more. Soon it was cold and dead. Not a word had been spoken since the initial greeting. The pastor glanced at his watch and realized it was time to leave. He slowly stood up, picked up the cold, dead ember and placed it back in the middle of the fire. Immediately it began to glow, once more with the light and warmth of the burning coals around it. As the pastor reached the door to leave, his host said with a tear running down his cheek, ‘Thank you so much for your visit and especially for the fiery sermon. I will be back in church next Sunday.”’ We live in a world today, which tries to say too much with too little. Consequently, few listen. Sometimes the best sermons are
