Museums. These spaces are just three of the platforms the West Vancouver School District is using to showcase student art to the public. It’s all part of the Lighthouse Festival – a two month celebration of student visual and performing arts. Lynne Tomlinson, director of instruction and innovation with the district, said the idea started when she met with teachers, who told her they wanted to highlight student art. “We think it’s a really important part of student learning and their development,” she says. The festival started April 9 with a performing arts stage and pop- up gallery at Park Royal Shopping Centre. Now it continues with visual arts exhibition SD45 ONE, put together by West Vancouver Secondary teacher and artist Jackie Wong. The project showcases student art alongside professional work. Prior to the exhibits, school district alumni – now professional artists – held workshops, giving students the opportunity to try out each artist’s unique style. Well-known names such as Bobbie Burgers, Victor John Penner and Cori Creed took part. “They really liked the concept of getting to work with the kids,” says Tomlinson. The West Vancouver Museum is hosting the resulting art, including pieces by both primary and secondary students, submitted by teachers and chosen by committee. “You might have a Kindergarten piece of work up next to another work by a professional artist,” says Tomlinson. The day the exhibit opened, 800 people came to see the work – more traffic than the museum has ever seen in a single day. The other art display was a little less conventional – it was housed in three shipping containers scattered along the West Vancouver waterfront. Each container showcased art from a professional artist highlighted alongside student art. Lighthouse Festival and SD45 ONE are part of the district’s renewed emphasis on arts programs. “The district is really moving towards a focus, not just on arts, but on student passions and finding ways to really enhance their schooling,” says Tomlinson. The district also has – or is working on – similar programs in other disciplines, such as sports, entrepreneurship and trades. The Container Art Exhibit had a successful run ending May 19, while the SD45 ONE exhibition at the West Vancouver Museum is on until May 31. A bright Chimichurri salsa, and a tender flank: the perfect-anytime barbecue.Flank steak is an often overlooked cut of beef that is full of flavour and wonderfully tender when cooked right and sliced nice and thin. Chimichurri adds a bright spectrum of flavours to the rich flavour of grilled beef.

INGREDIENTS2 lb beef flank (skirt) steak, 3/4” thick

Chimichurri Sauce1 1/2 cups fresh parsley, tightly packed, 1/2 cups fresh cilantro, tightly packed, 1/2 cup olive oil5 cloves garlic2 Tbsp chopped shallots1 Tbsp lime juice

STEAK-OUT!

SETUPSet your grill for direct cooking over high heat

COOKINGGrill for 4-6 minutes, turning once, until medium rare. Allow to rest 10 minutes before slicing across the grain.Top slices with the remaining Chimichurri and serve with your favourite grilled veggies.

Pulse the shallots and garlic in a food processor until finely minced. Add parsley and cilantro and pulse until finely chopped.Transfer ingredients to a bowl then add olive oil and lime juice. Season to taste with kosher salt and set aside.Apply Chimichurri generously to the steak and seal tightly in plastic bags. Marinate for 4 hours in the refrigerator.

Hand-crafted or “craft” beers are made in small batches using traditional, time-honoured methods and fresh, natural ingredients. Within that definition, the hallmark of craft brewers is innovation.

It’s all about interpretation.

Historic styles can be combined with a unique twist or two, leading to unprecedented tastes. The possibilities seem endless – and that’s a good thing for aficionados and newcomers.

There are so many types of craft beer – and seemingly more every day – where to start? Knowing the basics of beer-making is the first step… into a whole world of new flavours.

The core ingredients are deceptively simple: grain, water, hops and yeast.

And then the magic begins.

The quantity and variety of the hops alone can lend some surprising flavours. You might taste hints of grapefruit, pine or resin in a classic West Coast India Pale Ale – it is, after all, a big, bold beer with nothing to hide!

Stouts, porters and winter ales are notably robust offering up a roasted, sweet, grassiness derived from toasted grains.

And those glasses of cloudy beer with a lemon on the rim? Wheat beers. Hefeweizen (“hefe” – yeast and “weizen” – wheat), for example, is an unfiltered beer brewed with wheat as well as barley. Flavours of coriander and orange peel may be added to the mix, creating a light, refreshing drink for spring/summer – perfectly enhanced with that slice of lemon.

Basic Cruising is the introductory level for keel boat sailors. The syllabus is set by CYA and to receive a basic cruising certificate you must pass the written and practical tests. The course is run over five days, with a short 1-hour classroom session each day and 7 hours on the water in the Club's J22 keel boats. The course includes using the outboard, getting a boat ready to sail, handling sails, man-overboard procedures, anchoring and basic sails, man-overboard procedures, anchoring and basic sailing equipment and terminology. This course includes the PCOC if you don’t already have it.

Sail Canada (CYA) Basic Cruising This course offers two 5-hour days spent on the water with an instructor/coach. You will cruise the waters of Howe Sound and experience the fun and excitement of keelboat sailing. You will be intro-duced to the basics of steering, using the sails and generally just having fun on the water. No experience is necessary!
