How can subjects and verbs agree?• Both subjects and verbs have number; they are either

singular or plural. Subjects and verbs must agree in number.

• Singular subjects require singular verbs.

• He likes rice, but Laura does not.

• Plural subjects require plural verbs.

• They walk to the park, but the dogs run.

• When a sentence has a verb phrase, the subject must agree with the first helping verb.

• Joseph has been practicing his drum routine.

• Even when a word, phrase, or clause comes between a subject and its verb, the subject and verb must still agree.
