Crash! Bang! The noisy clatter of dishes woke me up. Our maid seemed to be in a foul mood. “'Ma must have yelled at her for being late again” I thought to myself with grin. For those of you…Mallige is our maid who comes in daily at 7:30 AM to do the housework. At least that's what she agreed to do, when Ma interviewed her. In fact, she meekly nodded her head to everything Ma said, and we were thrilled, thinking here was the 'Perfect' maid. If only we could find the perfect maid…

I had my breakfast, and picked up the newspaper and suddenly something at the bottom caught my eye! “Looking for the PERFECT MAID? Call Maid to Order 99458 17900” I dialed the number immediately! A brisk, efficient female voice answered. “Can I really order a maid?” “Of course” the voice said “Just let us know what you are looking for, and leave the rest to us. We'll track her down and deliver her to your doorstep!”

OK in that case, let me think...what kind of a maid do we want? Neat and clean, must be punctual, honest, efficient and work without supervision, not take leave without informing etc., I rattled off a long list to the voice. “Well” said the voice, “I'll get back to you in a week!” The family was pretty excited when I broke the news to them.

Soon the D Day was upon us. We were all awake early in anticipation…and at 7:30AM sharp, the doorbell rang. Ma opened the front door and gasped – there on the doorstep stood the perfect maid, all shiny and new. We crowded around, gaping at the smart young woman who stood there on the doorstep. “Good Morning Madam, I'm your new maid Rosy”. A smart English speaking maid…how we would be the envy of the neighborhood!

All we needed was to find out if she had the rest of the attributes I had asked for. The maid followed Ma into the house, and I heard Ma telling her what she was expected to do. Shortly after that, she shooed Ma out of the kitchen, and whipped up a delicious breakfast for us of toast and scrambled eggs. A hot cup of coffee came after that. We were all quite pleased, and I had a big grin pasted on my face, looking like a big Cheshire cat that had not only licked the cream, but had drunk up all the milk as well. After all, it was I who had brought about this miracle in our house… the PERFECT maid. Life was rosy with Rosy!

I glanced at the clock one morning. It was 12:30. Just enough time for a pre-lunch nap...“Call me when lunch is ready Rosy!” I said and curled up on the sofa with a small yawn. Forty winks don't take long, and soon I felt Rosy shaking me. I woke up with a start and sniffed the air but couldn't smell any lunch cooking.

“Wake up sleepy head. You fell asleep at the table”. It was Ma with a frown on her face. “Mallige is not coming today and tomorrow so you'll have to wash up the breakfast things”. “Mallige? But what happened to Rosy?” I said. “Who's Rosy?” said Ma with a blank look. Realization dawned! I knew it was too good to be true. No wonder they say that dreams are better than reality! At least in dreams, the PERFECT maid does exist…

Method

• Take a deep non-stick pan and dry-roast the til in slow flame for 2 minutes.

• Do not allow it to change color.

• When it cools down, crush half of the til (keep the remaining til aside).

• Add the remaining ingredients to the crushed til – khova, sugar, jaggery and dry fruits. Mix well.

• Make small ladoos with help of your palms.

Vokkaleri is a small village in Kolar district off Bangalore – Chennai highway. Within a stone's throw from here is a tiny rocky hillock with a legendary temple. This is Markandeshwara Betta. Driving along the bends between hills and boulders, this hill can be identified from afar with the two tall towers of the repeater station at the top.

To reach the top where the temple stands, you can either choose to walk up some 600 steps from the base or drive up to the summit along a narrow curving road. The hill is part of the Vokkaleri reserve forest spreading around 1700 acres and there is an extensive forest range all around! The temple has a tall entrance tower (Chola style architecture) leading to a large courtyard with shrines of Nandi and Markandeshwara.

According to legend, Markandeya who was born with a short lifespan was being taken away by lord Yama. But the young lad, an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva embraced the Linga. The noose thrown by Yama fell on him and the Linga. Enraged by this Lord Shiva threw his trident at Yama to save his devotee as he held on to the Linga. According to lore, the finger prints are still seen! The spot where Yama's noose fell became the origin of the river, which was named Markandeya.

But this water-body is actually an underground spring which surfaces much further and drains into Markandeya tank near Budikote. The courtyard also has Uyyale Gopura with fine carvings and a stone pillar for lighting the lamp. Shrines of Parvathy, Ganesha, Subramanya, Bhairaveshwara and panels of Sapthamatrikas also adorn the courtyard.

The hillock is located amidst a serene surrounding. All around are thick forests and bushes which are home to a variety of mongoose, hares, foxes etc. A good number of species of birds can also be spotted here. The rocky caverns and boulders are known to shelter bears and may an occasional leopard too. Though, chances of witness wild animals are rare, the scenery itself is panoramic with large tracts of the forest as far as the horizon.

On the way back to Vokkaleri, you can stop to witness the road side shrine of the village deity. The town of Vokkaleri also has a few temples besides the unique shrine of Ravaneshwara where a Ravanothsava festival is held during March every year.

Getting there: Driving on NH 4 towards Kolar from Bangalore (after 56 kms) the village of Arabhi Kothanur is reached. Here take the road to the right going to Vokkaleri (10 kms away) From Vokkaleri, anyone will guide you to Markandeshwara Betta (4 kms further) It is better to contact the priest at Vokkaleri to ensure the temple is open. Buses ply to Vokkaleri from where autorickshaws can be hired. Food and water have to be carried. Please ensure to leave the place clean.
