England must raise game in Stokes’ absence: SibleyREUTERS — LONDON

England all-rounder Ben Stokes will be missed in the remaining two Test matches against Pakistan and players must step up in the absence of the 29-year-old to add balance to the team, opening batsman Dom Sibley said yesterday.

Stokes has been ruled out of the two matches at the Ageas Bowl in S o u t h -

ampton for family reasons and the England and Wales Cricket Board said he would shortly fly to New Zealand, the

country of his birth.“He's a massive part

of our team and one of the best players in the world but family comes first and we’re sup-porting him with every-

thing that is going on,” Sibley told reporters ahead

of the second Test, which begins

tomorrow.“We’ll have to make do

in his absence and people will have to step up.”

England sealed an unlikely three-wicket victory in the first Test after slumping to 117-5 at one point in their chase of 277 runs.

“Winning the last game was brilliant and the balance of that side was the way we had it for the West

Indies series. I’m not sure (who will come in for Stokes), I just train

hard and do my thing to score as many runs as possible,” Sibley added.

“It’s going to be interesting to see what kind of wicket we’ve got in Southampton... the conditions at Manchester were more suitable to their attack than what they might get here.

“They showed they have an impressive

attack. They’ve got all the variety and the skills so we’ll have to

be at our best to be able to cope

with them.”

Broad fined by father over Shah send-off

E n g l a n d p a c e m a n Stuart Broad has been sanctioned by his father Chris, a match referee, for a breach of the International Cricket Council’s code of conduct during the first Test against Pakistan.

Broad was fined 15 per cent of his match fee for a level one breach and also given one demerit point for using inap-propriate language when dis-missing Yasir Shah in Pakistan’s

second innings at Old Trafford on Saturday, hours before England completed a three-wicket win.

Broad admitted the offence and accepted the sanction pro-posed by Chris Broad, the former England batsman who is now a member of the ICC’s elite panel of match referees.

He would not normally be officiating in a match involving his son.

But in a bid to cope with travel restrictions imposed by the coronavirus, Chris Broad, together with a team of English umpires, is officiating in the current three-match series, having presided over England’s 2-1 win against the West Indies last month.

Sri Lanka postpones new league over quarantine rules AFP — COLOMBO

Sri Lanka’s cricket board yesterday indefinitely post-poned the new Premier League tournament scheduled for later this month as health author-ities insisted on a two-week quarantine for foreign players.

Sri Lanka Cricket had announced last month that it hoped to resume top-level cricket with the Lanka Premier League (LPL) from August 28 with the participation of 70 international players.

“We asked for a three-day quarantine period, but the health authorities insisted on 14 days,” said a cricket official.

“Under those restrictions, it is not feasible to hold the tournament this month.”

The local board proposed 23 matches from August 28 to September 20. The matches

were to be played at four inter-national venues on the island.

The lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL) is due to start in the United Arab Emirates from September 19.

Sri Lanka Cricket had not named any of the foreign stars who it said had agreed to play in the LPL. All those entering the island are currently required to quarantine for two weeks at state-managed centres followed by another two weeks of self-quarantine.

The government had announced the reopening of the country’s international air-ports to foreign tourists from August 1, but it was since indef-initely postponed amid fears of a second wave of infections.

Sri Lanka has reported over 2,875 infections with at least 11 virus deaths, according to official figures.

NZ promises bumper summer scheduleREUTERS — WELLINGTON

West Indies, Pakistan, Australia and Bangladesh have all confirmed they will tour New Zealand during the southern hemisphere summer, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) chief executive David White said yesterday.

Under the International Cricket Council’s Future Tours Programme, West Indies were scheduled to play three Tests and three T20s in New Zealand, while Pakistan will play two Tests and three T20s.

The five Tests form part of t h e W o r l d T e s t Championship.

Bangladesh were due to play both one-day interna-tional and T20 series and Aus-tralia will round out the season in a three-match T20 series against New Zealand next March.

“We’re making tre-mendous progress,” White told reporters yesterday.

“Just on the phone actually to the West Indies, they are confirmed. Pakistan have confirmed, Australia and Bangladesh. So, 37 days of international cricket. We’ll go through the detail of that in due course.”

New Zealand has managed to largely contain the spread of the novel coro-navirus and has held a national rugby competition in

front of big crowds over the last couple of months.

White also confirmed that the ‘White Ferns’ women’s cricket team will tour Aus-tralia in September and recip-rocate by hosting the Southern Stars in February, when New Zealand would have been staging the post-poned 50-over World Cup.

He said NZC would be looking at the biosecurity

model being used by England to host test series against West Indies and Pakistan and were discussing details of quar-antine for incoming teams with the New Zealand government.

“It’s a lot of cricket,” he added. “We’ll just be held up for a week or two while we work with the government agencies on the managed isolation but they’ve been tremendously supportive and making really good progress.”

Under the International Cricket Council’s Future Tours Programme, West Indies were scheduled to play three Tests and three T20s in New Zealand, while Pakistan will play two Tests and three T20s. The five Tests form part of the World Test Championship.

‘Big loss’: England will miss Stokes in last two Tests, says Raja

IANS — LAHORE

Former batsman Ramiz Raja (pictured) feels that Pakistan should take advantage of all-rounder Ben Stokes’ absence from the England squad for the last two matches of the ongoing Test series.

The hosts lead the three-Test series 1-0 following their three-wicket win in Man-chester last week.

“He (Stokes) is one of the most talented all-rounders in the world. Also, his name is now being taken in the list of one of the best ever,” Raja said.

“He has been an impactful batsman for England and he comes up with the goods with the ball as well. It will be a big loss (for England). Pakistan need to take advantage of his absence,” he added.

Earlier, fast-bowler Jofra Archer had said that the hosts will definitely miss the services of Stokes in the final two Tests in Southampton, but had insisted that they will try to get the job done without him.

“We now have to complete the job without Ben Stokes. He is someone we would miss even if he was unable to bowl or hit a ball. He has such an impact in the changing room

beyond what he does in the middle,” Archer wrote in his column for Daily Mail.

“When I was in quarantine in Manchester, he would come past my hotel room each night after play -- as did Joe Root -- knock on the door and check on me. He cares about those around him.

“If you are going into battle, Stokes is the person you want right next to you. He would never run away from a chal-lenge, but family is so important and he has to be in New Zealand right now.

“We all understand that, support him and hope things settle quickly and he can come back when he is ready,” he wrote.

Halep labours to victory on comeback at Prague OpenREUTERS — PRAGUE

World number two Simona Halep (pictured) made a rusty start on her return from the COVID-19 shutdown as she edged a seesaw battle against Slovenian Polona Hercog 6-1, 1-6, 7-6(3) in the opening round of the Prague Open yesterday.

Having secured a crucial break to move 5-3 ahead in the third set, Halep dropped her own serve before squandering three match points.

The tension increased as three more match points went begging for Halep, who eventually converted her seventh chance to close out the match in a tiebreak.

Halep, who skipped the Palermo Ladies Open last week, was making her first appearance on the WTA Tour since her title triumph at the Dubai Tennis Champion-ships in February.

“I’m happy because I could win after a six-month break,” the 28-year-old Romanian told a news conference.

“I felt tension in my back after the first set, even though it was short and I played well.

“After the second set, I felt tired. But I knew she was in the same position so I just had to stick to the

plan and fight - the fighting helped me to win the match.

“Sometimes it’s good to call it a good match - but I don’t wish for the next one to play three hours!”

The WTA Tour restarted the season last week in Palermo with strict health protocols, including a limited number of fans and no hand-shakes between players after the match.

“Emotionally it’s not easy, but we have to

adjust - we live in tough t i m e s , ” Halep said.

“I’m all i n a n d

thing.” T h e

Romanian has said she

will make a decision on her

participation in the US Open, which starts on

August 31, after playing in this week’s claycourt tournament in Prague.

Second seed Petra Martic, who suffered a semi-final defeat in Palermo last weekend, rebounded with a 7-6(2) 6-3 win over Russian youngster Varvara Gracheva.

Despite needing a medical timeout between sets, Martic went on to break her opponent’s serve twice to seal a convincing victory.

Meanwhile, the International Tennis Federation has dropped a doping violation charge against American player Maksim Tikhomirov because of a lack of evidence.

Tikhomirov had been charged with evading a doping test while playing a tournament in Cancun, Mexico, in January.

However, the ITF said yesterday that its Independent Tribunal found there wasn't enough evidence "to be comfortably satisfied that a violation was committed.” The ITF said Tikhomirov was free to compete again with immediate effect.
