ONE THING I LEARNED “Even with the best-laid plans, something will always go awry,” says Annslee. “Don’t stress over it; just roll with the punches and enjoy yourself.”

VINTAGE, LIVELY AND FUN were key words for Annslee when she began planning the big day. “Nothing stuffy,” she says. “We wanted everyone to have a good time.” From her glamorous gown, netting veil and feathered accents to a classic car and vintage-inspired table settings, a retro look added to the festivities.

GET AWAY CAR Annslee set the retro tone from the get-go by arriving in a vin-

tage Mercedes made available by Bell Gable, where the event was held. Afterward, it became

an ideal spot for a photo op.

<

GOING TO THE CHAPEL Dark suits and turquoise dresses were accented with red—ties for the boys, heels for the girls, flowers, and even beaded neck-laces Annslee made as gifts for her bridal party.

<

COLORFUL CAKES“I used to work in the bakery

where we ordered the cakes, and I liked all the flavors too much to choose just one,” says Annslee.

Instead, she selected seven, deco-rated with variations on the red

and turquoise theme and offering something for everyone.

<

CUTE COUSINSAnnslee’s cousins led the way down the aisle with windmills instead of flowers. “They were so intrigued, they didn’t have a chance to be nervous,” she adds.

<

WEDDING SOURCES

CENTERPIECES Circular bouquets of red carna-

tions topped simple cylindrical vases with blue tinted water.

“I love turquoise and red,” says Annslee. “They’re bright,

spunky, cheery…just like us.”

ONE THING I LEARNED “We opted for a morning ceremony because it was a great fit for our families, and now I think it was one of our best ideas,” says Jennifer. “We had the entire day to leisurely celebrate.”

JENNIFER AND BEN MODIFIED the typical wedding day timetable and began the festivities by dawn’s early light, meeting dressed in their finery for photos before the morning ceremony. “It was such an intimate moment and was very special to see each other and share that time together,” says Jennifer. “It was still intense to stand at opposite ends of the aisle in the chapel, but we enjoyed that we had shared that private time before.”

FAVORS & FLOWERS The couple opted for

wintry white and peach as morning fresh hues for the event, showcased in

bouquets with garden roses and gifts of peach

preserves for guests.

<

CENTERPIECE & CAKEJennifer’s brother, Jonathan,

who occasionally works with the event’s floral designer, devised the

concept of using birch, oak and sycamore from the

Edwards’ family property in Eastern Arkansas as a

personal touch in the rustic setting. Floral sprays and a

multi-tiered cake with but-tercream frosting rested on

thick slices of wood.

<

BRIDESMAIDS Jennifer opted for wintry white dresses for the bridal party as well. “It was a break from tradition,” adds Jennifer, “but the look was so light and ethereal, it seemed just right for the morning ceremony.”

<

TABLE ACCENTS The bride and groom’s

fathers each carved the couple’s initials in chunks

of sycamore, which were used as decorative accents. “We have them

in our home now,” says Jennifer, “and they mean

so much to us.”

<

NEWLYWEDSThe couple walked down the aisle to the sounds of a piano and trumpet. “Live music seemed to fit the morning event,” says Jennifer. “A quartet played at the reception, but it wasn’t just classi-cal—Coldplay, The Beatles and Kings of Leon surprised everyone.”

NOVEMBER 13, LITTLE ROCK

ONE THING I LEARNED “We used a wedding coordinator, and that was a won-derful decision for us,” says Jenna. “She kept us on track and took the stress out of the event so we could all enjoy ourselves.”

“WE HAD A RATHER WHIRLWIND ROMANCE,” says Jenna, who dated Julian for seven months before he popped the ques-

tion. They set a wedding date for seven months later, and used the time spent planning to get to know each other’s family better.

“My mom and Julian’s mom both came to Little Rock; I called my maid of honor, and we all took a road trip together to Brinkley to look for my wedding dress,” says Jenna. Not only

did the group have a good time and get to know each other, but Jenna also found her dress and veil that day. “It

was the best kind of girls’ trip,” she adds.

<

THE CAKE“I searched blogs and web

sites endlessly for inspiration,” says Jenna, who found a look she liked and then turned the

idea over to her cake and floral designers. “They both

brought their creativity to the design and it was better than

anything I had envisioned,” she adds.

<

INVITATIONS A botanical theme began

with the invitations and car-ried through to the cake, flow-

ers, centerpieces and other elements of the big day.

<

FLORAL FLAIRThe sculpture shapes of succulents and maidenhair ferns caught Jenna’s atten-tion, and her floral designer complemented the green plants with colorful dahlias, ranunculus and celosia worked into bouquets, cen-terpieces and boutonnières.

<

WEDDING PARTYOptions abounded for party

apparel—Jenna suggested navy cotton dresses from J.

Crew and let each bridesmaid select a style, and Julian sug-

gested dark gray or black suits. The result? A unified look

that didn’t require rentals.

ONE THING I LEARNED “Make it your own, and focus on your relationship,” says Laura. “This day is about the two of you becoming a family."

AS A BRIDAL STYLIST, Laura had insider insight when it came to planning her own wedding. “Making the event unique and personal,” she says, “is what makes memories.” For Laura, who lived in New York, and Ben, a first lieutenant in the Army who was based in North Carolina, personal meant returning to their hometown of Little Rock. As for unique, they opted for a navy, green and yellow color palette, which Laura says “isn’t the norm for a fall wedding,” and chose a nature-inspired theme based on Ben’s pet name for Laura, “bird.”

Vintage handkerchiefs wrapped the stems and sported each bridesmaid’s monogram. “I searched and searched until I found one for each, and they became part of my thank you gifts to them,” says Laura.

“something blues,” including her satin heels. A vintage handkerchief emblazoned with

OCTOBER 2, MOUNT NEBO

ONE THING I LEARNED “We incorporated lots of do-it-yourself ideas to stick to our budget,” says Britney. “But ultimately, the projects were fun and became memory-makers, adding to the time we spent with our family.”

THE BIG SKY MOMENT at sunset atop Mount Nebo was part of the impetus for Britney and Aaron to exchange vows at the picturesque state park, along with the fact that the natural setting meant decorations could be secondary. “It’s beautiful with big open views and the sun setting, so anything else was just for fun and to make it more personal,” says Britney. The orange and red hues of fall foliage and sky blue became the color palette for the event.

<

PROGRAMThe couple put together their own programs, using materials from Hobby Lobby and their home printer. “It kept us busy right up to the wedding, but our families pitched in on proj-ects whenever they could,” adds Britney.

<

BUTTONS & BALL JARS

“Because we worked on the décor

ourselves, vintage elements became

an accessible, affordable and fun

way to go,” says Britney. Boutonnières purchased from Etsy sported vintage but-

tons, and blue Ball jars holding candles and buttons graced

burlap-topped tables.

<

PHOTOBOOTHAaron and his father built

a custom photo booth and trucked it to the reception

site. “Rather than giving guests favors to take home,”

says Britney, “everyone had their picture taken as a

memento.”

ONE THING I LEARNED “Some things won't go the way you expected and you'll end up shifting plans, so don't sweat the details,” says McKinley. “You’re there with everyone who loves you. Relax and appreciate them.”

SWEETHEARTS SINCE HIGH SCHOOL, McKinley and James dated throughout college and were nearing graduation when James proposed. McKinley was off to graduate school shortly, so they opted for a hometown ceremony during winter break. “I always envisioned a spring or summer wedding, but December worked so much better for us,” she says. “So I embraced it, and decided we’d make it a winter wonderland, with wintry colors, candlelight and accents that evoke snow and ice. ”Winter white, shimmery silver, rhinestones, crystals, pearls and more decked the halls elegantly.

ONE THING I LEARNED “Traditional elements can be a wonderful part of the event, but don’t be afraid to modify the routine to suit your personality,” says Rebekah. “Finding ways to make the event personal can make it more fun for everyone.”

“SOMETHING OLD” was an important part of the big event for Rebekah and Lucas, a home renovation expert. The couple shares an affinity for historic homes, heirloom antiques and flea market treasures, which made the Greek Revival-style Terry House, an 1840s estate in downtown Little Rock, a natural choice as their wedding and reception venue. “In the fall especially, with the big trees and the gardens surround-ing the house, it’s such a beautiful place,” says Rebekah. “It was just the right fit for us.” They played up the historic style of the home by adding a dozen vintage chan-deliers suspended from trees and heirloom antiques as a backdrop for the gathering.

ONE THING I LEARNED "You’ll hear many opinions; don’t let people dissuade you from the elements that are most important to you," says Amy. "For me, it was an outdoor wedding, which can be risky this time of year. But it went off without a hitch, and we were so happy we stuck with that decision."

“FALL IS MY FAVORITE TIME of year, with the coolness in the air and all the colors,” says Amy. She and Jason selected early November as the ideal time for the outdoor wedding of their dreams, and scheduled it for mid after-noon so the ceremony would be com-plete and the reception well underway before dark. “It also gave our family members—mine from El Dorado and Jason’s from Fort Smith—plenty of time to arrive,” says Amy. The wooded set-ting inspired her to opt for a dress that was shorter in the front and without a train, a custom creation handmade by her mother. “She made her own wed-ding dress and has made a few for other people, and when I was a little girl we always talked about her making mine someday,” says Amy.

ONE THING I LEARNED "Our reception included a seated dinner, so it was important to have an accurate guest count," says Candice. "Many people don’t RSVP by the requested date, so be prepared to send a follow up note, and make sure you have time as the event nears to double check your guest list and seating chart."

A CENTRAL LOCATION was a key decision for Candice, who hails from Russellville, and Julian, who’s from Pine Bluff. Having each resided in Little Rock for several years, they knew the capital city was not just a gathering point for their friends and family around the state, but would also be an accommodating locale for their extended family and guests flying in from around the U.S. “We had lots of family arriving from the East Coast and the Midwest, and welcomed several hundred guests to the ceremony,” says Candice. “We tried to make it easy for everyone to join us.” An evening reception at Chenal Country Club in West Little Rock offered guests an opportunity to enjoy the wooded setting.

WEDDING FINERYAfter trying on a variety of styles, Candice decided a satin halter dress with an A-line skirt had the simply elegant look she envisioned. Her something borrowed? A veil, which her sister wore at her own wedding a few years prior.

<

THE CAKE“My favorite color is

blue, and we used blue velvet and Capri

blue throughout the event,” says Candice.

The multi-tiered wed-ding cake featured a

deep blue monogram and accents, plus light blue rosettes.

<

THE HAPPY COUPLECandice and Julian spent a week honeymooning in

Saint Lucia following the big day. “Touring the city, taking

a sunset cruise, exploring the area…there was so much to

do, it was a wonderful get-away,” adds Candice.

<<

BOUQUETSClassically simple calla lilies comprised the bride’s bouquet. Blue hydrangeas and white roses became bridal party bouquets, and mixed in with lilies for reception décor.

CUPCAKESThe Cupcakes on

Kavanaugh shop is a favorite snack stop for

the couple, who opted to share their favorite

treat with guests in lieu of a traditional groom’s

cake. Tiers of classic vanilla, red velvet and

chocolate cupcakes were topped with a

SEPTEMBER 25, FAYETTEVILLE

ONE THING I LEARNED "We had a simple wedding, but it still required a lot of planning," says Kayla. "You can’t imagine the amount of detail work involved. The fact that we allowed a year for preparation worked well for us."

"WE’RE CASUAL PEOPLE,” says Kayla, who agreed with her fiancée, Shiloh, when he decided Converse athletic shoes would be a comfortable option for their garden wedding. The wedding party concurred as well, as Kayla and Shiloh made casual apparel a priority, including a pair of Converse for each groomsman. “We’ve all been in each other’s weddings, and our wedding was the fourth one just that year,” says Kayla. “We wanted our friends to enjoy themselves and be comfortable.” Kayla purchased off-the-rack dress-es and shoes as gifts for her crew, hoping that the classic styles could be worn for other occasions. Likewise, Shiloh rented suits for the groomsmen, and presented each with his shoes. “The clothing can be such an expense, we thought we would make that process easier,” adds Kayla.

AISLE ACCENTSBlue-gray and lilac

became the color palette for the event, based on the

men’s suits and the early fall event date. Mixed bou-

quets of casual ivory and lilac flowers tied with satin

ribbon graced the chairs along the aisle.

<

SWEET TREATSFour flavors of cupcakes

(pumpkin spice, chocolate, vanilla and lemon) served

as the casual finish to an outdoor buffet dinner.

<

GARDEN VENUE“We planned a September wedding because we knew this site would be beautiful then,” says Kayla. “We timed it for cooler temperatures and lots of green foliage.”

<

FAVORSBoth bride and groom are pharmacists, and in

a play on their profession as well as their last name, the maid-of-honor created “From the

Pharmacy of Love” medicine jars topped with a prescription for a happy life and filled with

purple and white jelly beans as gifts for guests.

<

EVENT ACCENTS Satin shoes with bows matched Kayla’s dress, while low heels made walking on the mixed outdoor surfaces a breeze all evening long. She opted for an additional touch of tradition for the ceremony and wore a full-length veil.

<

<

BOUQUETSince Kayla’s dress featured an organza sash tied in a bow and adorned with a flower and feathers, her floral stylist recommended a bouquet that could be held to the side and wouldn’t upstage the dress’ design. “I’ve always loved orchids and they worked well to hold in my arms instead of in front,” says Kayla.
