Let’s talk about feet……FOOT LAB!!!!

Page 19: Websites . Welcome to AP Physics! Pick up Safety Contract, Calculator Contract and index card. While waiting, compose a cinquain.

How many feet: Presentation

• Create a report and present it to the class when called upon. I will ask you 3 questions.

• What was your method for getting the measurement? This will include a diagram.

• How did you maximize the precision? • What is the usefulness of your measurement for

someone going to the hardware store to buy a rope the same length as the distance across the room?

Page 20: Websites . Welcome to AP Physics! Pick up Safety Contract, Calculator Contract and index card. While waiting, compose a cinquain.

Accuracy and Precision

• The Goal

• Measure the width of the hall as precisely as you can using “feet” as your units of measurement.

•

• Resources

• Strip of adding machine tape

•  Your foot

Page 21: Websites . Welcome to AP Physics! Pick up Safety Contract, Calculator Contract and index card. While waiting, compose a cinquain.

• 12.9 ft which is the same as 12ft 11 in

Page 22: Websites . Welcome to AP Physics! Pick up Safety Contract, Calculator Contract and index card. While waiting, compose a cinquain.

What is the difference between accuracy and precision?

• Accuracy is the real deal; the truth; the accepted value

• Precision has two meanings:– How repeatable the measurements are (range)– How small the interval of measurement is

• In the foot lab, what aspect of precision was being investigated?

• What do you think the goal is in science regarding accuracy and precision?

More measurement….looking for relationships

Page 27: Websites . Welcome to AP Physics! Pick up Safety Contract, Calculator Contract and index card. While waiting, compose a cinquain.

Order of Operations• When there is more than one operation

involved in a mathematical problem, it must be solved by using the correct order of operations .

• Remember, calculators will perform operations in the order which you enter them, therefore, you will need to enter the operations in the correct order for the calculator to give you the right answer.

Why Scientific Notation?

• It makes it easier to work with very large and very small numbers.

Page 37: Websites . Welcome to AP Physics! Pick up Safety Contract, Calculator Contract and index card. While waiting, compose a cinquain.

Given the following: 2.00 x 104

• The first part is called the coefficient (the 2.00). • The second is called the base (x 10) and exponent (4). • Proper scientific notation requires the coefficient to be

between 1 and 9. The base is always x10. If the exponent is positive, the number is greater than 1 and the decimal is moved to the right as many times as the exponent to convert to standard form.

• If the exponent is negative, the number is less than 1 and the decimal is moved to the left as many times as the exponent to convert to standard form.

• Use the EE key – not the carot!

Page 38: Websites . Welcome to AP Physics! Pick up Safety Contract, Calculator Contract and index card. While waiting, compose a cinquain.

Record the following in Scientific Notation

• 685,003 kg

• 6.85 x 105 kg

• 407,501,000 sec

• 4.08 x 108 sec

• 0.00621 m

• 6.21 x 10-3 m

• 0.00000000697 N

• 6.97 x 10-9N

You are an incredibly valuable employee.  Your boss wants to reward you so she offers you two options.  You can either work 10 days straight and receive one million dollars or you can earn a dollar per second up to one million dollars.  You would like to buy an elite condo in the Bahamas that costs exactly one million dollars.  Which deal will allow you to purchase the condo first?  (Assume that you work every second of every day in both cases.)  Your boss is in a hurry to a meeting so you only have five minutes to decide. Which do you choose?
