The top priority in the New World are the three G’s, GOLD, GLORY, and GOSPEL. The King and Queen do not want to loose any money nor do they want to loose time, and they will hold you responsible if actions and findings are not properly recorded.

Do not forget that you are a very important person in the success of this trip. What information you send to the King and Queen will determine the amount of finances and aide they send to you and the rest of the explores. The

1. It may be in your best interest before you set of in set of the new world to find as much information as you can about your new leader, Christopher Columbus.

• Your first letter should describe Christopher Columbus’s actions in previous trips and what you have learned about his tactics as a leader.

2. It may be important for you to look at what types of diseases are being brought to the new world and what the effects are so that you can know what to expect once you land in the New World.

3. What was the initial response of the natives? Were they willing to trade and give you land and food?

4. What was being traded? Make sure and explain why it is important that you remain over seas. If there is not gold what else is there?

5. The King and Queen are looking for gold and wealth is there gold to be had? Where is it?

• Write your second letter on how things are going, is there gold, is the disease affecting your exploration?

6. Now take all your documented information and write a final letter stating your opinion on whether or not the exploration should continue. Is this mission a success? The King and Queen have gained your trust by your previous two letters, and are waiting to make a decision on what your opinions are. Remember to be thorough and back up your opinions with several facts.

7. All letters should be typed double –spaced on modern technology titled Microsoft Word

Congratulations! Because of your great documentation the King and Queen have rewarded you with a significant amount of gold and they appreciate your hard work very much. The three letters that you sent back to Spain played a crucial role when the King and Queen had to decide whether or not to stay in the New World.!

I would like you to examine the voyages and explain to me, in two complete paragraphs, what you would have done differently if you were the leader in the expeditions for five points extra credit!

Congratulations on a successful mission!

Reading and Writing Standards Addressed:• Use comprehension skills such as previewing, predicting, inferring, comparing and contrasting, , summarizing, , determining the main idea, and applying knowledge of foreshadowing;• Make connections between their reading and what they already know, and identify what they need to know about a topic before reading about it.

This is a great independent exercise for students to think critically and individually about history and the effects it has today.

This exercise is intended to be completed in about 2-3 class sessions. The letters can be finished at home as homework but all research is intended to be completed during class time. It is intended for all levels of teachers. It is based on a topic that all teachers should be familiar with and the additional resources for students could also be helpful for the teachers as well.

The process is self-explanatory and very little technology experience is needed. The letters are intended to be done on Microsoft word which is easily available to most if not all students.

This assignment can be completed with basic access to the internet and to Microsoft Word. Other resources are always an option but not necessary for completion of the project. The main resource is the internet and the websites used are available as hyperlinks on the process page.

It would be possible for a teacher to implement the lesson on their own as long as they are able to keep watch over what the students are doing. It is important for students to stay on task while they are the computers.

Conclusion

Each point through out the process is self-explanatory and it is intended for students to work independently.

For extra Guidance:• Be sure to explain how to use a hyperlink and that the links will include both information that is helpful and not. Make sure to explain that it is important to decide what information is relevant. • Help students understand the proper format for a letter, because the letter will be the basis of the final grade, it is important to spend a significant amount of time o f proper formatting of a letter. This would also be a good time to introduce different types of letters and let them choose one they see fit. • Make a clear deadline and add additional homework assignments where you see fit.

This is a great way to learn how to research and produce a letter in a different and interesting way. The webquest I have created is intended to help students learn and create a piece of work other than just a written essay. I hope that this will be a successful tool that other teachers will be able to use in their own classrooms.
