The Chimes Vol. LVII No. 12 Web Edition December 2014

Dear Friends,

Coming off the celebration of Thanksgiving, with its reminders of God’s abundance

(at least for those of us who see such things), and looking ahead toward the days of

Advent, I have found myself drawn once again to the poetry of Gerard Manley

Hopkins, the master English wordsmith and Jesuit priest of the nineteenth century.

Entering into Advent this year, I have focused on one part of one of his longer

poems; it is the penultimate strophe of his elegiac work, “The Wreck of the

Deutschland.” Hopkins wrote the poem in memory of five Franciscan nuns who

perished in the shipwreck. It stirs and challenges me so, and I offer it to you as an

Advent gift, to frame your waiting and watching in these days. With all the

negativity around us, may we let these words be our reminder together of the heart

of this season:

Now burn, new born to the world,

Double naturèd name,

The heaven-flung, heart-fleshed, maiden-furled

Miracle-in-Mary-of-flame,

Mid-numberèd He in three of the thunder-throne!

Not a dooms-day dazzle in his coming nor dark as he came;

Kind, but royally reclaiming his own;

A released shower, let flash to the shire, not a lightning of fire hard-hurled.

May the wonderful grace of the “released shower” of Bethlehem stir our hearts and

our wills in these days in our world, and renew in us a holy determination and a

kindled hope as this year draws to a close. In this season may we be wrapped in the

most gracious expectation.

Peace,

Bob Dunham, Pastor

Mark your calendar for UPC’s annual Christmas Congregational Brunch! This year, the brunch will be held on Sunday, December 21, at 9:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall.

The Congregational Life Committee and Deacons will host this potluck fellowship brunch. Beverages will be provided, and we ask that each member of the congregation bring a breakfast dish to share (quiche, muffins, fruit, etc.). Savory breakfast dishes, as well as fruit, are greatly appreciated as we attempt to balance out our Sunday morning Krispy Kreme allowance. Please re-member to label your dishes and serving spoons with your name if you’d like to have them back. Be sure to pick up anything you brought with you following the brunch. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Christmas with your church family. Please note the Christmas Congregational Brunch will take the place of our Second Sunday Lunch in December and is held on the same morning as our Service of Lessons and Carols (see above).

In order to give children the opportunity to remain in the Sanctuary on December 21 for Lessons and Carols, a Godly Play story will be told during the Christmas Congregational Brunch. Children are invited to join us in Vance Barron Hall at 10:15 a.m. Parents of Godly Play children are welcome, too. This is your chance to see what we do during Godly Play. Story will con-clude by 10:30 a.m. so that children have time to get robed before worship. Please join us!

Chris tmas Congrega t ional Brunch Sunday, December 21

The Christmas Joy Offering of the Presbyterian Church (USA) will be received Sunday, December 21. The offering will bring good news of great joy to the poor in circumstance or spirit.

This special offering provides the opportunity for future leaders of the church, from all racial and ethnic backgrounds, to pursue and fulfill their dreams through Presbyterian-related education. The offering also helps families of active and retired church workers meet unexpected needs through the Assistance Pro-gram of the Board of Pensions.

Chris tmas Joy Of fer ing Sunday, December 21

This favorite celebration of the season traces the story of the birth of our Lord through Lessons from the Old and New Testaments and with favorite music of the season sung by all the choirs of University Church.

The stories of the fall from grace in the Garden of Eden, visions of Old Testament prophets, the announcement of the Incarnation by the Angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary, and the birth of Jesus will be interspersed with Christmas hymns and carols, including music by Thomas Brown, David Willcocks, John Rutter, Herbert Howells, David Music, Georg Philipp Telemann, Greg Gilpin and Benjamin Harlan. Instrumentalists will include Audrey Cook, cello, Lindsay Guamán, flute, Grace Gollmar and Lily McCormick, bells, CC Owen and Weston Barker, percussion, Paul Neebe, trumpet, Elva Small, piano and Tom Warburton, organ.

We join churches around the world in offering this beloved service of scripture and music to celebrate Christ’s birth.

Thank You for Shar ing God’s Abundance ! UPC 2015 Stewardship Campaign

Thank you for your enthusiastic and prayerful response thus far to University Presbyterian Church’s 2015 stewardship cam-paign. Both Dedication Sunday services on November 16 were very well attended, with large numbers Sharing God’s Abun-dance with their prayers and pledges on that day and during the two weeks since. As of November 24, we have received 323 stewardship pledges for 2015 totaling $1,239,371.

If you haven’t yet pledged, please do so as soon as possible so the Session can set the 2015 church budget and plan ministry and mission for the coming year.

In order to pledge, you may:

1. Fill out a pledge card and place it in the offering plate on Sunday. 2. Email your pledge to the finance office ([email protected]). 3. Mail your pledge to the church office at 209 E. Franklin St., Chapel Hill, NC 27514 4. Visit the stewardship page on the church’s Website (www.upcch.org) and pledge online.

The stewardship page also contains updated campaign results, links to Bob Dunham’s recent stewardship sermons, transcripts of “Moments for Stewardship” shared by four UPC members, a worthwhile (and short!) stewardship video, and a down-loadable version of the colorful, four-page stewardship brochure.

We again invite you to consider your support for this year, during which construction negatively impacted attendance, offering plate giving and the church’s budget. Please bring your current pledge up to date if it is not, and prayerfully consider giving even more than you pledged if possible before December 31.

As the 2015 Sharing God’s Abundance stewardship campaign concludes, we would like to express our sincere appreciation for the many gifts and prayers that have built, sustained and grown University Church, and for pledges that will enable it to contin-ue doing God’s work next year.

Sunday, December 7: Was Advent in the Bible? Celebrating Advent brings us some of our most meaningful tradi-tions. But how did we go from a babe in a manger to wreaths, candles and Jesse Trees? We’ll talk about how these things came to hold so much meaning for us as we anticipate Christmas.

Sunday, December 14: PYC Christmas Gala! Join PYC for our annual Christmas party. Wear your craziest Christmas or Advent clothing and join in the celebration.

Sunday, December 21: Caroling with Youth Choir - Make a joyful noise with your friends from PYC! We’ll carol at a few houses and join together for a meal afterward. 5 - 9 p.m. Watch your weekly PYC email for the loca-tion.

Sunday, December 28: Merry Christmas! PYC is on Christmas break tonight. We’ll start again with a family meal on January 4 at 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.

Presbyterian Youth Connection is a place for all youth in 6th-12th grades to come together in the name of Jesus Christ. PYC is a place where every youth belongs and is welcome. Youth do not need to have certain grades, go to a certain school, dress a certain way, or hang out with a certain crowd to belong. We seek to create a Christian community that values each person as a child of God and to help one another understand what it means to live a life of faith as youth transition through adolescence.

December Calendar

Stay in touch with all things PYC. Be sure you’re receiving the weekly PYC email from Kim McNeill, Staff Associate for Youth Ministries. It will tell you all you need to know for the coming week. And sign up for text reminders, as well! Text “@UPCP” to (919) 267-2577 and you’ll be signed up to receive last minute reminders about PYC. A Let ter to the Congrega t ion f rom Ka te F iedler Boswel l

Dear UPC family,

Many thanks for your warm welcome! Marc and I are excited to call Chapel Hill home. We look forward to getting to know each of you. Thank you for introducing yourselves and wearing your name tags. It may take more than one introduction for us to connect so many names and faces. We appreciate your graciousness and patience.

I am thrilled to join you during such an exciting time of growth and new opportunity. Life is busy at University Church! While the dust settles, I look forward to learning your rhythms and favorite qualities of such a dynamic community of faith. As we get to know each other, please share your favorite moments as a member of this church family. I love a good story, and I am eager to listen to your stories of faith and fellowship at UPC.

As the reigns of adult education, congregational life, and membership are passed on from the current staff, I look forward to continuing what is working well and imagining how we can fine-tune the great things already happening. Please feel free to share your thoughts and observations with me. Together we can take the church from great to greater.

While we move back into the renovated building and prepare for the new construction phase, I look forward to unpacking our hopes and possibilities for an exciting future ahead. Thank you for extending this call to an enthusiastic, outgoing, double-preachers’ kid who has always loved the church. Already, my heart feels at home.

Warmly,

Kate Fiedler Boswell, Associate Pastor for Adult Ministries

At the November meeting of Session, we:

listened to a devotion by Karen Vandersea on how to start simply to help others you encounter, with excerpts from Margot Starbuck’s book Small Things with Great Love;

welcomed Kate Fiedler Boswell, our new Associate Pastor for Adult Ministries;

approved the baptisms of Catherine Grace Rogers, daughter of John and Trina Rogers on November 23, 2014; and Daphne Laine Morales, the daughter of Jason and Sarah Morales on November 30, 2014;

received a report from the Endowment Committee presented by their Chair, James Smith, including their recommendations for the fall disbursements from the Endowment Fund and approved the following proposals:

$1500 for the McLaughlin Endowment Preacher; $1150 for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Meals on Wheels program; $1150 for the John Skeel Missionary Foundation to help build a new Christian Church Sanctuary in Kenya; $2000 to the Children and Youth Ministry Committee for a training workshop for volunteers working with the Godly Play program; $5000 for new UNC Inpatient Hospice Facility;

received a report from the Stewardship Committee detailing events leading up to Dedication Sunday and follow-up plans, noting the importance of pledging for budget and planning purposes

received a report from the Building Committee with renovations to the existing building almost finished. The Town Coun-cil should vote on approval of the special permit and rezoning needed on January 12, 2015. Demolition of the Rosemary Street house would be the next step, possibly occurring in April, 2015, followed by construction of the new wing;

previewed a new UPC Visitors Brochure from the Membership Committee;

listened to a report from our commissioners to the October 25, 2014 New Hope Presbytery Meeting, at which they heard plans for reorganizing the Presbytery to increase the connectedness of smaller churches and use a more passion driven ap-proach to mission. They were able to welcome Kate Fiedler Boswell to the Presbytery and hear an overview of campus min-istry in the Presbytery from our own John Rogers; and

received a report from Kim McNeill and Jake Krzyzewski about the amazingly awesome recent All Youth Retreat to Mon-treat. The retreat was planned and carried out by the high school youth and was attended by 45 middle and high school youth, as well as 18 adults!
