The biggest and most powerful animal in the forest was the bear, and he was the first to reach the mountaintop. Bear stood on the highest peak, looked out over the forest below, and argued for remaining in darkness. He said that the creatures of the forest would be able to sleep better in darkness because there would be no light to keep them awake. Most of the other animals were afraid to challenge Bear, so they agreed with him. Raccoon said that he did not mind the darkness because he was so intelligent that he could find plenty of food, even in the dark. Wolf was easy to please, too. She didn’t mind the darkness because she could howl in darkness or in light. But one animal did stand up to Bear. Chipmunk, the smallest of the animals, argued that it would be better to have both light and darkness. Chipmunk was very clever and very determined. Bear continued to argue for darkness, but Chipmunk made many good arguments for light. Slowly, the night passed. Bear grew tired of talking, but Chipmunk chattered on and on, full of energy. COMPREHENSION

1. How the Chipmunk Got Its Stripes

Long ago, the Earth was covered in darkness. None of the creatures living there knew what daylight looked like. One day, all of the animals of the forest gathered together. They had a decision to make. They wondered if it would be better to remain in darkness, or if it would be better to also have light. Deer, Chipmunk, Raccoon, Wolf, Bear, and many other creatures climbed to the top of the highest mountain. The mountain stood so tall that there were no trees on its top, and it was covered only with rocks. Millions of stars blinked in the dark sky overhead. As the other animals dropped off to sleep, one by one, Chipmunk kept arguing long into the night.

Finally, Chipmunk’s efforts were rewarded. The first sunrise ever seen by the animals appeared over the top of the mountain. Radiant, golden light spread across the sky. The clouds surrounding the mountaintop turned a delicate pink. The animals woke up and were amazed by what they saw. Chipmunk began to dance from rock to rock. Bear was furious because he didn’t get his way. He roared loudly and ran at Chipmunk. He chased Chipmunk all the way down the mountain. Bear was quick, and he reached out to grab Chipmunk. Chipmunk dodged his giant paw, but not before Bear managed to scratch her back with his long claws. Chipmunk escaped, but that is why, to this day, you can see stripes on Chipmunk’s back!

2. A Bad Robot Bonnie Graham just had to admit it: EARL was a bad robot. No longer could she overlook hismany faults. He played music that was just embarrassingly bad. He seemed incapable of coolrobot things like dancing the robot or cutting steel with his laser eyes. At night his pistons andspinning gears made so much noise that Bonnie could hardly sleep, even when she got reallymad and squeezed him into the closet. And then yesterday happened. Bonnie had spent months building her robot. She called itElectronic Armed Robotic Laserdeath (EARL), a name she chose last year when her motherseemed totally cool with the whole laser eyed robot living in our house idea. Bonnie later‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐discovered her mother was joking; the project’s first setback. From there, Bonnie did all the engineering herself. She designed EARL’s remote stabilizationsystem, using an air filled bladder in the machine’s belly to keep its torso upright. She machined‐the hands from steel bearings coated in vulcanized rubber. Bonnie used lathes at her mom’stool and die company to sculpt EARL’s face, with slanting eyes and a mouth full of jagged metal‐ ‐teeth, which made him look terrifying and awesome. For 10 months, building EARL consumed all Bonnie’s free time. Her friends at Garrett MorganHigh School made a website called WheresBonnie.com, where they posted pictures of Bonnie’sface crudely superimposed onto people climbing the Himalaya Mountains, or shopping in Tokyo.Ok, seriously I don’t remember the last time I saw you after school, Nicole Akmal, one ofBonnie’s closest friends, wrote in an email. Maybe this “robot” is actually that new boy ChasPhelps? Call me, nerdbreath. So yesterday Bonnie brought EARL to school. She knew he wasn’t quite ready—his softwarestill had bugs, and sometimes his right leg seized. But she couldn’t handle her friends’ needlingany longer, or the weird looks from kids she didn’t know. And man, EARL made one sweet entrance. Trotting up the stairs beside Bonnie, the robotreflected sunlight like a mirror. Everyone fell silent as the two of them passed, and no oneheard EARL’s loud buzzing motorized arms and legs over the idling buses. The euphoria didn’t last long. Once inside, EARL noticed all the metal lockers, the tops of whichhave metal slats reminiscent of the robot’s face. EARL slipped his rubber hand free of Bonnie’sto inspect the lockers, shoving students aside in the process.“EARL. Cancel Directive!” Bonnie said.EARL heard nothing over the din of shrieking students running away in fear. Finally, the robotfound a bashed in locker door, probably the work of roughhousing football players. More than‐

the other lockers, this one’s bent metal door resembled EARL.The robot grabbed it in both hands and ripped it off its hinges.Bonnie was struck with horror. He’s destroying the school! He’s going to get me expelled!“EARL! CANCEL DIRECTIVE!!” she screamed.EARL froze. The robot’s head spun toward Bonnie as he clutched the locker door closer to hisanodized steel chest.“Looks like your stupid robot found a friend,” said Brian Cotterman, a classmate who alwaysteased Bonnie about her braces.“Shut up, weasel,” Bonnie shot back. But she was shaking. EARL’s arms could generate 1,200pounds of pressure per square inch, enough to crush bowling balls. But how could its 2.1 gigahertz‐ ‐microprocessor brain, torn right from her dad’s old laptop, possibly malfunction like this?“EARL. Drop,” Bonnie said. The robot walked to her side, but it did not drop the locker door.Bonnie sighed. Reprogramming the robot and reducing its arm strength meant weeks of work, but this was not the time.“We’re late for homeroom,” said Bonnie, surprised to hear herself say “we.” EARL is a tool,Bonnie’s mother kept reminding her, not a friend or a puppy.“Don’t anthropomorphize it, honey,” Bonnie’s mom said one night after she found Bonnie dancingaround her bedroom with the metal contraption. “It’s a walking blender. Never forget that.”Right, Bonnie thought, standing in the school hallway. Walking blender. With a shaky hand, she took EARL by the elbow and guided him—it!—into homeroom.“Why hello, Bonnie!” said Mrs. Grube, the homeroom teacher for Bonnie’s freshman class. From her open expression, it didn’t seem the teacher had heard the commotion down the hall.“I see you’ve brought your experiment. What is that he’s carrying?”A wave of suppressed giggles swept across the classroom.“Um, it’s a programming error,” Bonnie said. “I can fix it.”“Hmm,” Mrs. Grube said, pausing for a few uncomfortable seconds, her eyebrows knotted asshe figured what to do next.“Well,” said the teacher, her mood brightening, “We’ve all heard a lot about your robot. Whydon’t you tell us about him?”Bonnie exhaled. “Great!” she said. “EARL. Initiate Demonstration Program 1.”The robot turned and faced the class. The students’ backs stiffened. Only now did they see thething’s true height. Demonstration Program 1 called for EARL, using his right index finger, topress “Play” on the iPod embedded in his chest. The song “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” byDaft Punk would flow from speakers in his hips, and EARL would dance, making karate chops‐with his hands as the wheels in his feet executed perfect moonwalks.Unfortunately there was a locker door in EARL’s right hand, and he refused to let go.So the robot defaulted to Demonstration Program 2, tapping the iPod with his left index finger.Bonnie watched in horror as her robot waltzed to Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On.” Shehad forgotten all about Demonstration Program 2. It was written months ago, back when shedoubted EARL could handle pop and lock dance moves.‐ ‐Tears filled Bonnie’s eyes. She didn’t even like Celine Dion anymore!“EARL! Cancel Directive!” Bonnie shouted. The robot heard nothing over the lyrics. “Near, far, where EVER you are!” The terrible‐screeching caterwauled through EARL’s thigh speakers. “I believe that the heart does go on!”

Mrs. Grube’s eyes stood as wide open as her mouth. Bonnie’s classmates pushed back in theirchairs, unsure whether to laugh or run for cover.I cannot stand one more second of this, Bonnie thought. As EARL pivoted left in his waltz, shemoved in behind him, reached into the seams in the robot’s lower back, and disconnected thered and black clamps holding power lines to EARL’s battery pack. As the big machine slumpedto the ground, its collapsing torso squeezed air from the inflated bladder, making a noise like aballoon rapidly losing air.The classroom lost it. Weasel Brian Cotterman and his four stupid friends laughed so hard theyfell off their seats and rolled across the floor. Bonnie felt like she might explode. Tears pouring, she bolted out of the classroom. That night Bonnie got her first good night’s sleep in weeks. She was worn out from all thecrying. Plus her dad moved his car from the garage and put EARL in there instead, so finallyBonnie couldn’t hear the machine’s clicks and whirs. When she finally woke up, she walked outto the garage and found EARL. He slouched in the far corner, one arm draped over hermother’s drill press, the other wrapped tight around the school locker door.Bonnie smiled. The robot had found some friends, and now it was time for Bonnie to find hers. She took her phone from the pocket of her shorts and called Nikki Akmal.“Hey dorknugget,” Bonnie said. “What are you doing later?”1.Who is EARL?AEARL is Bonnie’s robotics teacher. 3. The Civil War

The Civil War was waged because eleven southern states seceded (broke away and started their own government) from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. The secession took place primarily because of a long-standing debate concerning states rights, and more specifically, the issue of slavery. As new territories became states, opponents of slavery and advocates of slavery often clashed over whether or not that state should allow slavery. After violence broke out in Kansas over the issue, and after Kansas entered the Union as a free state, southerners began to believe that the new president, Abraham Lincoln, would take away their rights to make local decisions and would abolish slavery. Henceforth, Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas broke away from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. Richmond, Virginia, was made its capital and Jefferson Davis was made president. Kentucky, Maryland, Delaware, and Missouri were divided on the issue and were declared "border states". Congress, in an effort to preserve the United States, declared war on the Confederate States of America on April 14, 1861. The first shots of the Civil War were fired April 12, 1861, at Fort Sumter, South Carolina. Although there we no deaths reported that day, the shots at Fort Sumter signified the start of a long, bloody war that would become the most deadly in the history of the United States. Many major battles such as Bull Run I and II, Antietam, Shiloh, and others, claimed tens of thousands of lives on both sides in 1861 and 1862. Neither the Union nor the Confederacy had the upper hand. The turning point in the war, however, occurred on July 1, 1863, when Confederate and Union armies met at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The battle that ensued was one of the bloodiest battles in American history. Eventually, Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia was driven away from Pennsylvania by Union general George Meade and his Army of the Potomac. The battle did much to cripple the Confederate army. Meanwhile, in the western battlegrounds, Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant had gained control of the Mississippi River and port of New Orleans which effectively split the Confederacy in two. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia was further decimated after Ulysses S. Grant was made commander of the Union Army. Grant waged dozens of surprise attacks against Lee's army in the wilderness of Virginia in 1864. Although the battles resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of soldiers on the Union side, the Confederate Army was at the brink of collapse. Meanwhile, Union general William T. Sherman marched through Georgia and the Carolinas, destroying everything in his path. The march came to be known as "Sherman's March to the Sea". Finally, after Union forces had invaded the Confederate capital of Richmond, the Confederate states surrendered on April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia. The Union was preserved.

4. The Rio Grande

Q. Read the passage and select the correct answers. The Rio Grande, although not the longest river in America, the Rio Grande is one of the most

important. But, unlike other significant rivers, it is not used for shipping. In fact, oceangoing ships cannot navigate the waters. No, what makes the Rio Grande so important is its location. Since 1846, it has been the official border of Texas and Mexico. The Rio Grande is either the fourth or fifth longest river system in North America. It all depends on how it is measured. Because the river twists so much, it occasionally changes course. And these course shifts can cause it to be longer or shorter. At its last official measure, the Rio Grande clocked in at 1,896 miles. The river starts in Colorado and extends downward to the Gulf of Mexico. Downward is the best way of describing it too. Not only does the river extend south, but it also starts in the mountains and gets lower and lower in elevation as it extends to the Gulf. Its name is Spanish for the “Big River,” but the Rio Grande is actually known as Rio Bravo in Mexico. “Bravo” translates as “furious,” so the name makes sense. Because of its twists and turns, it certainly does seem to be angrier than most rivers! The Rio Grande today is mostly used as a source of drinking water. Sadly, much of the water has been drained from the river. Parts of the river are almost dry! This is because people use more water from the river than the river can get back from rain and other sources. Experts are working to correct this, though, with hopes of restoring the river to its past strength. Today, the river is important as a source of water for Texans and Mexicans. More important, it is a symbol of cooperation between two nations. Though borders like the Rio Grande separate nations, they are also shared spaces. The Rio Grande is therefore a symbol of friendship and peace between two peoples.

1) According to the passage, why is the Rio Grande so important? A. It is a source of drinking water for most of the United States. B. It is the border of Texas and Mexico. C. It is the longest river system in the United States. D. It is known by two different names. 2) In paragraph 3, the author most likely writes that “downward is the best way of describing it too”

toA. prove that the Rio Grande’s water levels have gone down recently B. argue that the Rio Grande has changed shape over the years

9

Page 10: jgpechs.files.wordpress.com … · Web viewquestion bank for english class 6 term 2. time duration of annual exam: 2 hours marks: 100 . comprehension. how the chipmunk got its stripes

C. highlight the fact that the Rio Grande flows south and from high elevations D. explain why the Rio Grande is known as the Rio Bravo down in Mexico3) Based on its use in paragraph 4, the word furious most nearly means A. angry B. large C. twisted D. dry4) According to the passage, the Rio Grande has endpoints inA. Texas and the Gulf of Mexico B. New Mexico and Colorado C. Texas and Mexico D. Colorado and the Gulf of Mexico____________________________________________________________

5. The Incredible Machine Everyone has a favorite attraction at an amusement park, and I am no different. However, unlike most people who seem to prefer rollercoasters, my favorite ride is a little more gentle. Every time I go to Coney Island, Navy Pier, or the Santa Monica Pier, I absolutely have to ride the Ferris wheel. The Ferris wheel is simple and yet also quite complex. That is, riding it is easy, but how it works is complicated. A series of carts are attached to a wheel, which is attached to a rim. That rim rotates vertically around an axis, and gravity keeps the carts upright. As simple as the ride seems, only advanced engineers can make safe and fun Ferris wheels. What It Lacks in Thrills… While the Ferris wheel is not as thrilling as a rollercoaster, it is still very exciting. The fact of being high in the air makes it so much more entertaining than a lot of rides. I mean, how often do you hang from that high up in daily life? Nevertheless, I have to admit, I don’t seek Ferris wheels out because of their excitement. Rather, I find them very relaxing. At the top of the Ferris wheel, you get beautiful sights of the park. You also get a sense of calm that you don’t get in the hustle and bustle of the park below. Additionally, Ferris wheels are also gorgeous to look at when they are lit up at night. In fact, the original Ferris wheel was designed as much to be seen as to be ridden. It happened at the World’s Fair The first Ferris wheel was made by and named after George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. He designed it for the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893. It was the tallest attraction there, standing 264 feet high. However, visitors to the fair were impressed by the size of the ride as well as the mechanics of it. In 1893, anything that was not turned by hand was considered a sight to see. And the wheel, which was a machine, was truly incredible to see. Further, as one visitor put it, the wheel was amazing because it seemed to be missing support. That is, it did not look like it could stand on its own. And yet it did and even rotated! They Keep Reaching Higher and Higher Ferris wheel technology has only improved since then. Most of today’s Ferris wheels are much larger than that first one. The largest in the world is the "Singapore Flyer," which stands slightly taller than twice what Ferris’s did!

10

Page 11: jgpechs.files.wordpress.com … · Web viewquestion bank for english class 6 term 2. time duration of annual exam: 2 hours marks: 100 . comprehension. how the chipmunk got its stripes

Today, the Ferris wheel is the most common amusement park ride. But that does not mean you should take them for granted. Instead, be thankful for Ferris’ invention. The next time you’re at an amusement park, don’t just look up at the impressive wheel in the sky on your way to a newer attraction. Take it for a spin!

A. impressive B. beautiful C. exciting D. simple

4) What does the author like best about Ferris wheels?

A. the impressive engineering and beauty of them B. the excitement and thrills they guarantee C. the beautiful sights and relaxation they allow D. the fact that most amusement parks have one

5) According to the passage, the Ferris wheel was originally designed for

A. Coney Island B. the world’s fair C. Disneyworld D. Singapore
