Badge 2: Digital Literacy Badge: School Experience ICT Badge

Within my school experience setting the children have access to laptops, tablets that are in portable trollies so they can be transported throughout the school to different classes. The school also has an ICT suite with enough computers for the children to have one each. They have an allocated ICT time slot every week, which is led by a different teacher. Each classroom also has interactive whiteboards and at least one computer, sometimes two to support children with special educational needs. I can use all of these ICT resources to help support my teaching and to provide interesting activities for the children such as videoing children news report and provide interactive whiteboard tasks.

In ICT we have looked into creating leaflets on the Romans on Publisher and making a video from freeze frames about Gladiatorial matches. We also used Scratch a coding software where the children made their own interactive games, they learnt to change the sprite with a click of a button and learnt to create a score board for the number of times the sprite got caught. In a different school I have seen the children create their own comic strips on the story of Kenzuke’s Kingdom, a book by Michael Morpurgo.

The use of the Interactive Whiteboard in the Primary Classroom

It is important to remember these facts when using the internet to ensure your safety.

Social media is very popular and it is important to take the necessary precautions such as: Privacy settings, not talking to strangers, not having personal information online like where you live and where you go to school.

It is also important to be aware of the dangers involved with cyber bullying. Ensure you report any harassments or insults made on the internet that make you or others around you feel unsafe.

Interactive Whiteboards are used across the country for many purposes within the classroom.

‘The whiteboard can be used to deliver instruction in a variety of ways… Allowing students to physically interact with the board and can assist with meeting the needs of tactile learners. Numerous software programs can be used that involve user contact with the whiteboard.’ Beeland, Jr and William D (2002: 1) They are used daily for displaying work, interactive activities and a great resource to aid children’s learning. It can support children with different educational needs, as it can zoom in change the font size and colour to aid reading and development. There are many interactive games and resources that can be used as starter activities and extension tasks. As Beeland and William (2002:1) state it is important for children to physically interact with the board because it aids learning and engages students which is important because ‘Student engagement is one of most important factors that affect teaching and student motivation to learn.’

http://downloads01.smarttech.com/media/research/international_research/uk/becta_researchreport.pdfThere are lots of resources out there for the use of Interactive whiteboards like interactive books for guided reading sessions. This link to a pdf file discusses the uses of interactive whiteboards in a classroom and the affects it has on children’s achievements. It has statistics to show the increase in academic achievements with the support of interactive whiteboards. In Round Five I discuss other uses of the interactive whiteboard as well as providing links to resources for the Interactive Whiteboard in many subjects.
