Finger-painting of my mother pretending to be a monkey.

Human control – use of bare hands and is the most primitive form of art whilst the precision presents human intelligence.

Humans using monkeys for testing as they are the closest biologically to us.

Animal control – Idea of evolution [ important that without apes, humans would not be as advanced as they are today.]

Is the animal face the focal point or the portrait itself?

Fight for dominance within the painting.

Grey/ green paper

Is porous meaning the paint dries quickly and is hard to blend. Absorbs the water meaning the paint must fully dry before the finished colour is shown

Forest colour- resembling the wild/ leaves/ habitat.

Colours are dulled. Least favourite to paint

Experimenting with surfaces

Papers are colours that a monkey or ape’s fur could be.

Black paper

Paint dries quickly but is not absorbed. I paint by layering; usually with a white

layer last. I could quickly produce multiple layers

Produces more of a streaked effect. (It was difficult to put paint on the page, then blend. Instead I found it easier to cover more of the surface by covering more of my finger than just the tip, making long/ thin marks, then blend the paint.

Provides a good contrast between the paint and the background but is too blunt

Dark brown/ black paper

Smooth meaning the paint could easily be applied and blended

Difficult to draw on (used a coloured pencil for a visible outline but was difficult to paint over with thin paint or rub out.

Good, contrasting background colour, less blunt than black.

(2)

White paper

Sometimes hard for paint to be a strong colour if thinned down but is the easiest to blend on.

Easy to draw on. Most traditional choice of background. Does not distract from the portrait at

all, unlike other colours. Favourite to paint on (1)

Light brown paper

Paint dried quickly but was easy to have multiple layers.

Colour is too similar to skin tone (which I why I chose to put it next to the clothing.)

Group Crit comments

Thought that the concept behind the finger painting was unique and that it added to my theme effectively. (Preferred this to my brush painting as it looks rougher.)

Liked the texture and surface produced.

Understood the irony behind the juxtaposition behind the animal power struggle and childish animal faces.

Thought the angle, light and its distortion made the piece visually interesting.

Were surprised when I said that this was a finger painting and suggested that I produced a larger scale piece, where I blend from side to side less.

‘Eyes are the windows to the soul’

This piece is based off my own photographs. I chose a sideward stance as not only does this emphasise the puffed-out cheeks, more monkey like, but also prevents the audience from looking directly into the subject’s eyes.

Hides her identity. Hides the humour

that is evident in her eyes in the photograph. To not take away from the severity of the theme of the power struggle.

Provided more opportunities for contrasting highlights and shadows e.g.: in the ear, along the cheek, the creases in the forehead and around the mouth which emphasises the animal face.Blue clothing:

To not associate with skin tone or background colours.

Cool colour. Little personality. Model’s choice to wear blue which raises the issue of

whether or not both sides of the power struggle have a choice or the intelligence to make a choice.

First attempt at a finger painting
