INTRODUCTIONAccording to Merriam – Webster dictionary (1828), music is the science

or art of ordering tones or sounds in succession, in combination, and in temporal relationships to produce a composition having unity and continuity. Music, as define by Levi R. Bryant, is not as a language, but as a marked-based, problem-solving method such as mathematics. But all in all, music is an art form and cultural activity whose medium is sound and silence.

For some people, music is part of a leisure time or music for them is for entertainment. They listens music to pass time by. But some of us here treat music as part of their lives. These people really take music seriously and they really love music so much, in which we call them “music lovers.” These people have high dreams such as singer, composer, music producer, instrumentalist, and etc.

Before these make their dreams come true, some of them go through music lessons and class to have more knowledge about it. They go from the very basic to more advantage and complex stage. And as for a beginner like you, this chapter will only focus on the very basic of music. So grab your pen and paper and let’s begin!

OBJECTIVESAt the end of this module, you, as a learner, are expected to:

Acquire knowledge about the basic terms of music. Distinguish different pitches with the use of chronic signs. Analyzes and illustrate the different notes and rests and their

The bass clef or the F – clef indicates the left half of the piano keyboard. It is also indicates harmony. These are the bass clef notes:

Music is divided into MEASURES, each usually containing a similar number of beats or counts. Each measure is separated by a BAR LINE. A DOUBLE BAR LINE shows the end of a piece. There are two types of measure: REGULAR MEASURE, which means the beats are complete; and IRREGULAR MEASURE, which means the beats are incomplete and the next beat will be found on the last measure.

Rests – are period of silence.

Time Signature – tells how many beats are in each measure of a piece. For instance, the upper number (3) means count three to each measure and the lower number (4) means every quarter note receives 1 count, every half note receives 2 counts, and every whole receives 4 counts.
