WHY ARE WE GOING? The Vertical Horizon Adventure Centre Camp is a major Kahikatea Syndicate event. We implement this activity bi- annually. Camps are a major part of the Year 7 and 8 programme. They help us to address the Outdoor Education aspect of Health and Physical Education at Level 4 of the New Zealand Curriculum. During camps students will partake in activities that enable them to achieve the following Health and Physical Education objectives: REGULAR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Students will: -demonstrate an increasing sense of responsibility for incorporating regular and enjoyable physical activity into their personal lifestyle to enhance well- being. SAFETY MANAGEMENT Students will: -access and use information to make and action safe choices in a range of contexts. POSITIVE ATTITUDES Students will: -demonstrate willingness to accept challenges, learn new skills and strategies, and extend their abilities in movement-related activities. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS Students will: -describe and demonstrate a range of assertive communication skills and processes that enable them to interact appropriately with other people. RIGHTS, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND LAWS; PEOPLE AND THE ENVIRONMENT Students will: -specify individual responsibilities and take collective action for the care and safety of other people in their school. WHY ARE WE GOING? The Vertical Horizon Adventure Centre Camp is a major Kahikatea Syndicate event. We implement this activity bi-annually.

Camps are a major part of the Year 7 and 8 programme. They help us to address the Outdoor Education aspect of Health and Physical Education at Level 4 of the New Zealand Curriculum.

At Raumati South School we believe that taking part in the ‘Camp Experience’ helps students learn to live well, with themselves, with others, with their environment, and in a changing world.

EDUCATION OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOME O T C is concerned with:

Education through the outdoors-The outdoor extension of established curriculum areas.

Education about the outdoors-Ecological studies, Conservation, Environmental interaction.

Education for the outdoors-Skills for recreation.

Camps in themselves provide many unique education and social experiences and expand the

opportunities for individual growth and achievement.

E O T C aims to:

-provide students with opportunities to learn outside the classroom, in all

curriculum areas

-promote appreciation of our heritages – local, national and global

-increase students’ awareness and understanding of the traditions and values of their own, the

tangata whenua and other cultural groups

-increase students’ understanding of different perspectives on land, natural resources and the environment, and of the need for conservation management

-provide students with opportunities for enjoyment, adventure and challenge, both close to home and far away

-provide students with opportunities to enhance spiritual, physical and mental well-being through uplifting experiences in a natural environment

-develop students’ skills so they can move with confidence and safety in urban, rural, and wilderness settings

-help students develop respect for themselves and others, by providing them with opportunities for personal and social development

-enable students to take increased responsibility for their own development and to regard learning as enjoyable, continuous, and lifelong

-provide students with opportunities to develop in many diverse ways.

E O T C OUTCOMESIn the course of their EOTC experiences, students will gain new knowledge and

understandings, skills and abilities, and attitudes, as well as building on those they already have.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDINGSThese include:

-Knowledge of the world-Knowledge of culture and traditions

-Aesthetic awareness-Awareness and understanding of issues for tangata whenua and other

cultural groups-Awareness of environmental issues

-Knowledge of how outdoor activities can benefit personal fitness, health and spiritual well-being-Knowledge and understanding of safe practices in the outdoors

-Awareness of recreational opportunities-Awareness that all aspects of learning are interrelated

-Specific new knowledge, for example, knowing the names of some animals after a zoo visit, or how to respond after being welcomes onto a marae.

SKILLS AND ABILITIESThese include the skills and abilities that enable students to:

-make decisions-solve problems

-take responsibility for self and others-evaluate their own learning

-apply learning to new situations-develop independence and interdependence

-work as team members-maintain good relationships with family, peers and others

As well as many more specific skills related to their particular EOTC experiences.

ATTITUDESThese include:

-enjoying the challenge and excitement of new experiences-having self-esteem and the confidence that goes with it

-having the motivation to learn-being sensitive to, and positive about, issues for tangata whenua and

other cultural groups-being sensitive to, and positive about, environmental issues

-sensitivity to, and respect for, the strengths and weaknesses of self and others

-readiness for major steps – starting school, moving to a new school, starting tertiary education and starting work.

KAHIKATEA SYNDICATE AIMS FOR CAMP

TEACHER AIMS:

-to foster warm, positive working relationships with the students of Kahikatea syndicate

-to promote an atmosphere where our students can feel they are able to experience new things without fear of criticism or failure

-to encourage our students to put into practice all the values and lessons that have been instilled in them throughout their primary school years

-to encourage the students to push their own boundaries and achieve all that they can

-to encourage all students to participate in all activities

STUDENT AIMS:

-to experience and learn all that they are capable of during their week at Vertical Horizon Camp

-to communicate, socialise and work together with everyone

-to encourage and support one another in all their activities

-to be proud of who they are and where they are in their learning

-to give things a go!

CAMP VOLUNTEERS CODE OF CONDUCTA volunteer is defined as “any person who provides a service for the school in an unpaid capacity.”

Volunteers are expected to:-recognise they have been invited to provide a service to the school-be responsible to the Board of Trustees through the Principal and Staff-work cooperatively with the school staff-be responsible to a teacher at all times when working with students-present a good role model in their dealings with staff and students-be honest, reliable and trustworthy in all matters related to their role-recognise children are individuals and learn in different ways-be non-abusive in their management of students-respect confidentiality of information

Any volunteer who, by their actions, does not abide by this Code of Conduct will be asked to leave and may not be invited to provide a service again.

ADULTS HELPINGThank you for your support. We acknowledge that without such support, school trips/camps would not be possible.

It is worthwhile clarifying your position in order to prevent any misunderstanding.

1. You must expect a high standard of courtesy and behaviour from all pupils at all times.

2. You are in charge if there is no teacher about, use discretion, if something doesn’t seem right, stop it. This is particularly important in any matters related to safety.

3. Be prepared to reprimand a student if it is necessary. Teacher support is available at all times.

I will be available to assist as required at any time during the day or night for the duration of the camp, including during the bus journeys to and from the camp.

VERTICAL HORIZON CAMP OBJECTIVESSAFETY AND SURVIVAL-recognise responsibility for own safety and that of others-follow all safety rules

CHALLENGE AND ADVENTURE-experience and enjoy a new environment-achieve fitness level appropriate to the level of physical challenge-develop confidence in challenging activities

CAMP RULES

THINGS YOU DO-use your common sense at all times-show respect for everybody – parents, teachers, camp staff and other students-do as asked, when asked, pleasantly-look after your own belongings -stay within camp boundaries-assemble quickly and quietly when asked to and LISTEN for instructions-stay out of other cabins unless you are invited to visit-stay in your cabin until 7am in the morning-show care towards the camp environment – cleanliness in all rooms, care of equipment and no littering-keep cabins tidy (inspections every day after breakfast)-use good manners at meal times, passing things, talking softly, walking to server, mouths closed when eating etc – make meal times pleasant for everyone-behave sensibly on the bus at all times - follow all rules and instructions given-complete activities that require adults supervision only when adults are watching

THINGS YOU DON’T DO-boys are not to go into girls’ cabins and girls are not to go into boys’ cabins-no leaving the cabins after lights out without permission, e.g. toilet-no disruptive behaviour, ie: not allowing others to sleep, leaving cabins after lights out-swearing and abusive language is not permitted-no illegal substances are to be brought along to camp, e.g. alcohol, drugs or cigarettes-normal positive interaction between students is expected – no hand holding, cuddling, kissing or other inappropriate physical contact

ALL STUDENTS AND PARENTS MUST AGREE TO THESE RULES PRIOR TO CAMP

Consequences of breaking these rules:Exemplary behaviour will be expected by all students during camp. If a student breaks camp rules this could impact on the safety of other students at camp. When rules are broken, this will be taken seriously. The severity of each incident will be considered. If the misbehaviour or incident is serious or continuing, students will be sent home from camp.

Dismissal: Parents will be called and expected to collect their child from camp as soon as possible. In this circumstance no refund is possible, and parents will have to pay transport costs.
