could please help, I’m only asking the members of St John’s for

Thought for this week….by Rev. Jordan Ling
“Forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors”
Do you recall the jubilee campaign for the millennium? It was a
call to forgive the debts of the world’s poorest countries. At the
heart of this campaign was two important principles – one was the
biblical principle of ‘jubilee’ as quoted by Jesus from Isaiah; a
year when all debts are forgiven and slaves were freed. The second
was the recognition of the role of wealthier countries in creating
the cycle of debt.
Forgiveness of debts owed is a theme throughout the story of
Christian history; God forgives Adam and eve, there are
consequences of their actions but he forgives them and provides
clothes for them. God forgives Joseph his arrogance and uses him to
save His chosen people, God forgives Moses the killing of an
Egyptian and again uses him to free the Israelites. God forgives
David his transgression (although some consequences remain) and
ultimately uses David’s family line to birth his son Jesus to
demonstrate all people can be forgiven.
If you have ever owed money and felt the burden of carrying that
debt and the freedom once it is finally repaid you have experienced
what it is to have a debt forgiven. God forgives us the debt of
getting things wrong, of not being perfectly loving and perfectly
kind. Confession is not liturgy to make us feel bad it is our
opportunity to have our debt lifted and be free. So Many people
live their lives burdened by memories of their own wrong doing
which can lead to further brokenness. In accepting our mistakes we
are opening ourselves up to being free of debt, in forgiving others
we are giving them the gift of freedom. Ask and receive –your debts
forgiven to live unburdened. Offer to forgive debts readily: to
keep account of them is to forget the debt God dismisses for us.
Let us be communities of Jubilee every day of every year.
