The Village of Brady, population 1094, is located in east-central Lincoln County on US Highway 30. The Brady Rural Fire District has an estimated population of 645 and covers about 265.5 square miles (169,920 acres) in Lincoln County. The terrain is generally sand hills used for

ranching north of the Platte River to rolling hills and river bottom flatlands and Interstate 80. The Union Pacific Railroad serves the district.

The Brady fire District is bordered on the north by the Arnold and Maxwell fire districts; the east by the Gothenburg fire district; the south by the Farnam fire district; on the southwest by the Curtis fire district; and on the west and northwest by the Maxwell fire district.

The Brady f i re d istr ict was organized in 1961. Today 20 volunteers operate f ive f i re uni ts.

Basic L i fe Support EMS is provided by the Brady Rescue Squad using two medical uni ts and 6 EMT’s.

COZAD FIRE DEPARTMENT The Cozad fire department was organized in 1870. The City of Cozad, population

3,977, is located in central Dawson County on US Highway 30 and Nebraska 21. The Cozad Rural Fire District has an estimated population of 1,011 and covers

about 176 square miles (112,640 acres) in Custer and Dawson Counties. The terrain is generally flat river bottom lands used for farming. Highways serving the area are

Interstate 80, US Highway 30 and Nebraska 21. The Union Pacific Railroad serves the district. The Platte River crosses the southern portion of the fire

district.

The Cozad fire district is bordered on the north by the Callaway fire district; the east by the Oconto and Lexington fire districts; the south by the Eustis fire

district; and the west by the Farnam and Gothenburg fire districts.

The City of Curtis, population ???, is located in north central Frontier County on Nebraska Highway 18 and 23. The Curtis Rural Fire District has an estimated population of 355, and

covers about 282.25 square miles (180,640 acres) in Frontier and Lincoln Counties. The terrain consists of rolling hills and canyons used for farming and ranching. Located ten miles southeast of Curtis on Highway 18 is the village of Stockville, population ??. Located nine miles northeast of Curtis on Nebraska Highway 23 is the village of Moorefield, population ??. Both villages are

located in the Curtis R.F.D. Highways serving the district are Nebraska 18 and 23. The NKC RailNet serves the district.

The Curtis fire district is bordered on the north by the Maxwell fire district; on the northeast by the Brady fire district; the east by the Farnam fire district; the south by the Bartley and

Indianola fire districts; and the west by the Maywood-Wellfleet fire district.

The Village of Elwood, population ??, is located on US Highway 283 and Nebraska Highway 23 in north west Gosper County. The Elwood Rural Fire District has an estimated rural population of 817 and covers 216 square

miles (138,240 acres) all in Gosper County. The terrain is generally rolling hills used for farming. Highways serving the fire district are US Highway 283 and Nebraska 18 and 23. The NKC RailNet serves the District. Located two

miles north of Elwood is the Elwood State Wildlife Management Area and the Elwood Reservoir. Located six miles north of Elwood is Johnson Lake which is owned by the Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District. A

large number of seasonal and full-time residential homes are located lakeside. The residents of the lake area operate the Johnson Lake First Responder Squad, with transport by the Elwood Rescue Squad or the Lexington

Rescue Squad.The Elwood fire district is bordered on the north by the Eustis and Lexington fire districts; on the east by the

Lexington and Bertrand fire districts; on the south by the Arapahoe-Holbrook-Edison and Cambridge fire districts; and on the west by the Eustis fire district.

The Elwood VFD and the rural fire district were formed in 1909. Today the fire department is comprised of ?? volunteers operating ?? fire units.

Frontier and Lincoln Counties. The terrain is generally rolling hills used for farming and ranching. Highways serving the fire district are Nebraska 18, 23 and 47. The NKC

RailNet serves the district. The Farnam fire district is bordered on the north by the Brady and Gothenburg fire districts; on the east by the Cozad, Eustis, and Cambridge fire

districts; on the south by the Cambridge and Bartley fire districts; and the west by the Curtis fire district. The Farnam VFD and the rural fire district were formed in 1907. The fire department is comprised of twenty-six volunteers operating ten fire units. Basic Life

The City of Gothenburg, population 3558, is located on US Highway 30 in south central Dawson County. The Gothenburg Rural Fire District has an estimated population of 1,053 and covers about 266.5 square miles (170560 acres) in Custer, Dawson, and

Lincoln Counties. The terrain ranges from river flatlands to rolling hills, sandhills and canyons used for farming and ranching. The Union Pacific Railroad serves the

community.

The Gothenburg fire district is bordered on the north by the Arnold fire district; on the east by Callaway and Cozad fire districts; on the south by the Farnam and Brady fire

districts; and on the west by the Brady fire district.

The Gothenburg VFD was organized in 1903. The rural fire district was formed on July 1, 1939. Today the department is comprised of forty-four volunteers operating 8 fire

units.

Basic Life Support EMS is provided by the fire department. Of the members, 22 are EMT’s. the department operates two EMS medical units.

of 1,780 and covers approximately 354 square miles (226,560 acres) in Dawson and Gosper Counties. The Union Pacific Railroad serves the area. A portion of the Johnson Lake State

Recreation Area is located southwest of Lexington. The Platte River crosses the southern edge of the fire district. Highways serving the area are I-80, US 30 and 283 and Nebraska 23.

The Lexington rural fire district is bordered on the north by the Oconto and Eddyville fire districts; and on the east by the Overton fire district; on the south by

the Bertrand and Elwood fire districts; and on the west by the Eustis and Cozad fire districts.

The Village of Overton, population 588, is located on US highway 30 in southeast Dawson County. The Overton Rural Fire District has an estimated rural population of 568 and

covers about 145 square miles (92,800 acres) in Dawson and Phelps Counties. The terrain ranges from river flatlands to rolling hills used for farming. Highways serving the district are I-80,

US Highway 30 and Nebraska L24B. The Union Pacific Railroad serves the fire district.

The Overton fire district is bordered on the north by the Eddyville and Sumner fire districts; on the east by the Elm Creek fire district; and the south by the Bertrand and Loomis fire districts; and

the west by the Lexington fire district.

The Overton VFD was organized in 1915. The rural fire district was organized in 1953. The fire department is comprised of 23 volunteers operating 6 fire suppression units.
